some soft polytrix where workaholic Rumi has two girlfriends and they decide when the hug begins and ends
One of the things that strikes me the most about Wake Up Dead Man is the portrayal of Grace Wicks.
Normally when a character (usually a woman) who starts the story being villified and villainised, just as Grace was deemed "the harlot whore" for 60 years, their redemption in the eyes of the story comes from the revelation that they were a better person than people gave them credit for. Maybe they were a good mother, or did their best in the face of the deck being stacked against them.
With Grace, we don’t see that. I can’t recall any instance in the movie of her being a particularly good person, or a good mother to Jefferson Wicks, or a virtuous woman as befitting her name. A lot of her actions are recontextualised to be more understandable within the story, yes, but that’s not necessarily the same.
Grace is messy. Some would call her shallow with her focus on expensive brands. She’s unashamedly destructive. She probably wouldn’t have wanted her father’s church where she was pretty much held hostage for years to be named after her, even if the Wicks family weren’t in charge anymore.
And she STILL didn’t deserve what Prentice Wicks and her family did to her, whether she was a good person or not.
There are no perfect victims. Trauma, shocker, tends to mess with people’s mental state a lot, and they’re not always going to act the way people think they should. They can’t always be, well, graceful about it- I dare say they can’t be EXPECTED to be.
And people don’t have to be perfect or even particularly good people to be sympathised with as victims.
And it didn’t take anyone finding out about her secret better side or good deeds. All it took was one person - Vera - having a change in perspective, to consider things from Grace’s point of view and realise she never really had a chance to BE a better person, to plant that idea in the heads of the characters and the audience.
That poor girl.
These were SUPPOSED to be quick Wake Up Deadman still studies, but I got lost in the sauce
the Knives Out filmmaking is fucking genius because it doesn't hide ANY of the murder mystery details that get revealed later on. The blood stain is ALWAYS on Marta's shoes. You can see Miles hand Duke his glass, take his gun and hide it. You see Blanc hand Helen the Klear. You hear the 'clangy clunk' of Jud hiding the flask in the first scene of Wicks's murder. You notice it all after it's revealed. It's not added in in the reveal scene. All of the clues are always there, you just DON'T SEE THEM. It just makes it feel so much more real.
Do we see the vision. Do we see the vision.
oh my god i literally watched this movie yesterday she deserved so much better
The best thing about Jud's ministry is how un-evangelical it is.
And I don't mean it's not like the Evangelical church, I mean he's not interested in convincing anyone to be a believer or a church goer. When the woman at the construction company starts talking to him about her mother, he doesn't tell her that God is there for her. He tells her that he's there's for. She already knows she can go to church, maybe she is even a Christian and feels like she has her God's love. But Jud knows that what she needs is another human being, because she's talking to him.
And that's such a better way to welcome people to your church than telling them to go. He's letting her know that there's fulfillment and safety and love there beyond just the religious side, because he's there.
Jud isn't interested in convincing anyone. He meets Benoit where he's at as an atheist, talking about the stories as just stories that we can take meaning from, and that works. It inspires Benoit to a moment of real, selfless kindness. He makes sure Benoit knows the doors are open any time he wants to enter, even if he enters as an atheist every time. Because the important thing is how you affect people and their actions, not how you affect their beliefs.
The scene with the construction worker ended up feeling so impactful it caught me off guard and I think this is a huge reason why.
It started as a comedic bit that quickly crashed into a serious tone. An extreme high followed by extreme low right really making you feel the weight.
But I also had been bracing for the moment of "God is here for you" preaching. Something that would have drawn me into a defensive mood.
And it didn't come. Instead it was "I am here with you". Not just a shepherd towards God, but as a human that also knew pain. And was here to listen.
yeah i like to give my blessing to the most pathetic looking weak little knight at the tournament. she can’t even look me in the eye when i give her my flower and she stutters out that she’ll do her best or something of the like. i think its funny when she has to cry and beg my forgiveness and i get to say “such a shame, i suppose my hand in marriage will have to go to someone else…” and then i get to hear her whimper like a dog. ive done this like 6 times alrea-
did she just win.
