You know, sometimes I read the argument that shipping Zukaang isn't great for Zuko or Aang because both roles come with a lot of responsibility and stress and they would be weighed down more if they were a couple. But I actually see where the responsibility on both of them would be good, because they would have a mutual understanding and respect for what the other needs to do and while yeah, it might keep them apart at times, they both grow into people who can make it work and learn to enjoy and make the most of the time they have together. I believe they would be able to find a good balance and have a wonderful life together.

I think Zuko and Aang are both people who appreciate the quiet moments in their relationship. The moments when it’s just the two of them. They enjoy time with their friends no doubt. But those moments under the stars? Or watching the sunrise or sunset? Taking a walk together? Lying in bed and just talking? They love those moments so much.. They cherish them. Because they know they won’t last forever. Especially with their paths as The Avatar and The Fire Lord. So they make the most of the quiet. And they are thankful for every single moment together.

They appreciate them especially as old men as they watch their family grow up and become more and more independent.

Can you describe your ideal zukaang family? I'd love to hear what you think about their kids

Oooh!! So I actually have fics planned about this and I would love to talk about the family I see them having.

So I see them having three kids;

Bumi - An airbender but who wants to follow his own path. He's not the strongest bender in the world but he has other strengths and loves travelling. I kinda see him being like Kataangs Bumi in LOK just... more secure in the love his parents have for him and generally closer to his family. He would have a great sense of humor and be very caring! Also goofy and fun loving. He doesn't get married or have kids but dotes on his nieces and nephews and is a really amazing uncle.

Ursa - She's a firebender and the only girl in the family. She's a powerful bender and very close to Aang. I see her feeling a little insecure sometimes (and I have a fic centred around her being sad because people say she's not really Aang's and that upsets her but he is always there to comfort her). She has a temper like Zuko and loves showing off her bending! She loves fun and playing with her brothers. She's lesbian and has two kids with her wife.

Tenzin - He's an airbender too. More serious than his siblings but will still have fun. He adores his parents and siblings and loves having them around. He's more shy and reserved and takes his bending and airbender status very seriously and he steps up to take on the responsibility of helping rebuild the air nation. He is married and has 4 kids like LOK Tenzin. But he is also a really good uncle and has a much closer relationship with his siblings. He also doesn't struggle with living up to Aang because that was never put on him.

So I always saw the boys being closer to Zuko by a little and Ursa being closer to Aang by a little but they are still a very tight knit and happy family. Zuko and Aang wait to start their family when their lives have calmed down a bit and they can be active and involved. I see them moving out of the palace to a small little house just outside the fire nation where they raise their kids happily and Zuko is still close enough to be a good fire lord.

They aren't the strictest parents and they don't put their hopes onto their kids but all their kids are amazing in their own right.

All three grow up with both cultures. They make clothes that combine both styles and they live a life where everything is blended together but in a way that's respectful so they know both cultures well.

They are very supportive dads. Their kids are awesome. They have a great many years together.

Most of their royal family portraits are not very traditional and are more silly. They both love to play and have fun with their kids and the kids admire and look up to their dads and feel like they have the perfect family.

I also kinda imagine they faced some hardships being an airbender/firebender family but they teach their kids that family is the people who love and are there for you through everything. But most of the time its all good.

I could go on forever lol

Who is your favorite Avatar and why?

Aang

My answer has always been and will always be Aang. I feel like he brought so much good to the world. He ended the 100 year war and he did so in a way that paved the way for more Avatars to follow a more pacifist path to defeating the bad guys in the world. I feel like his gentle soul is actually such a good thing for the world and I think the fact he fought so hard to find a better way is a really good thing. He didn't just sit there and refuse to do anything. He sought advice, guidance and found a way to take the past Avatars advice on board without compromising on his beliefs.

And I find that so fucking satisfying.

I also love Aang as a person. He is so positive and cheerful and kind. He's an amazing friend who isn't afraid to go above and beyond for the people he loves and even the people who don't like him. Aang is also one of the most forgiving characters I have ever had the pleasure to meet and he's inspirational to me for it. Aang is a character who encompasses love and that is so beautiful and appealing to me as a person. Aang was always very relatable and real to me and I have been drawn to him since I was a kid.

He is easily in the top 3 characters who means something to me and had an impact on my life.

What do you think makes Zuko and Aang work as a couple?

This is a question I could ramble on with but I will try to be concise. I feel like some of it is because I love the enemies to lovers and best friends to lovers and combine the two and it's amazing.

But in canon I feel like they compliment each other really well. Both are flawed characters who at their best are still different and over time it seems like Zuko softens out and becomes a character a bit more like Aang. At least that's how I view him in Legend of Korra. Of course that can happen as people age; mellowing out and becoming more content in their lives. And I think those things, beside their beautiful friendship and the mutual respect they share, would make them a wonderful couple. I think they would make each other happy and have each others backs and I think Zuko would get to the point after being friends with Aang a while that he was wrong to mock him and his culture and I think with all those barriers gone I could see them being able to fall in love as men who both have tremendous responsibility and even some guilt on their shoulders and I love thinking they could support and encourage each other and be there for each other.

Do you have any other atla ships besides zukaang? (Love your stuff btw)

Thank you so much!! ❤ I love hearing that. I love all the canon ships in ATLA too, so Kataang, Sukka and Maiko. So I'm lucky that I am happy with the way the canon couples went, I just happen to love Zukaang too and its my OTP of the show.

THANK YOU for this post. I always hated their adult character designs but couldn’t point to why, and didn’t want to be the “you just don’t like change” / “you just don’t like them as adults” guy

Knowing that Aang’s design is basically DiMartino’s self insert is really fucking embarrassing

This is so amazing and the difference it makes! I was so excited when I first heard we see some adult Aang in LOK and I was so disappointed when I saw him. 

Same with Sokka.

Man, it hurt to see their adult versions in canon.
