I have held
funerals
for every version of me
that did not survive.
I have prayed
for every last soul.
I have been
so many women
in such little time.

I am so on board with 2018 being the year we switch from self deprication to self love. I’m not saying you can’t use self depreciating humor to deal with stuff, but I would challenge you to really cut back on how much you talk about yourself in really negative ways. Because if you only ever talk about yourself as worthless garbage, that’s absolutely how you’re going to feel about yourself, and it’s really going to get in the way of your personal growth and developing a more health self image. Start small, start slow, but try to be kinder to yourself in the new year. Celebrate your little victories, forgive your setbacks, remember that you have worth and deserve happiness and love. You are not garbage.
Today, I’m trying to perfect the art of enjoying my own company.

In one of my earliest memories, I am eight years old, I have a fistful of afternoon, and I am asking the summer if it will always be this glorious.

Father Poem
The first time your father calls you a chicken shit
It’ll be as if you’re hearing the words for the very first time
With a sudden weight
Like G-D speaking into a corpse
Like surprise
Roots you’ve never felt until now
Meaning becomes existence
His playful frustration
A creed you’ve failed to recognize
Today is historic
Not because you are offended
But because you’re body understands something your mind does not
That anything this man says actually means something to you
Like idol
His opinion a holy statue
You’ve ignored for a long as you possibly could
Your own version of blame
A blanket of snow masking the honest of whatever lies beneath
The first time you will attempt to write a slam poem
You will think of your father
Each sentence resembles the creases of his palms
Stanzas standing like memorials in his dedication
You write each word in preparation for a battle
Forgetting is easy when you’re trying to believe in a story that your skin does not approve of
You will not thank him for using his name in such a way
To paint the ugliest pictures of a man you truly wish you could be
It will be the first and the only poem you regret ever writing
The first time you hear a poem about a kid wanting to be like his father
You will look at the metaphors like a target
Like a row of most wanted posters
You will judge that poet like a bounty
And shallow your ears
You will not realize that in the end you will wish you had wrote a poem just like that
You will wish that you had the courage to be anything but a victim
You will not know it until it is too late
The first time you sing to your father
He will not be able to give you his opinion
He will not be able to smile or lift his hands
The tubes running from his lungs
Will tell you that this is the result of waiting for so long
The rise and fall of his chest will not look like his own
You wait for a response
Like holding stillbirth
It will be the quietest performance you will ever give in your life
Time will grip your bones into submission
And tell you I told you so
When he finally leaves his physical body
Everything you thought you knew will become a first
Singing first
Eating first
Laughing first
Cooking first
The recipes you let slip from the spaces in your fingers will gather around your feet like
A mass grave
Love a first
Kiss a first
Life a first fucking lesson you were too busy to hold in your mouth
Before it became too sour to bear
On Sundays you will forget that it had ever happened
You have the urge to call him
Like an addict trying to reach for the last chance of survival in broken pipes…
And you will feel alone
And sick
And nothing will ever be the same
But on some days…
You swear you could feel his hands wake you
From sleep
Like The beginning of a brand new day

i wish i was more active on here. it’s kind of hard to be. “to be” active in general. i feel like i’ve been limiting myself lately, and i don’t now how to stop. i just wanna press go but i don’t think i have the control i once had. or thought i had. i’m listening to frank and everything feels good right now. i’m glad he used a limited amount of drums and really let his voice flourish on blond. it really gives you time to process his perspective. his writing. his pain. his love. his voice. i wonder if people listen to me and get lost or try to keep up. is there anymore pain left in my voice? idk. maybe i should start telling stories now that i’ve got peoples attention. lol. i got hella those. i wonder how many people out here got stories of me. like the ones where i left a bad impression vs. the ones where i set ‘em free. ALSo: just took a break to cook and frank's endless came on. literally, crying my eyes out. literally. you ever hear something so therapeutic your first reaction is to cry? it’s been a while since i’ve felt this. obviously.. i’m an emotional wreck right now. i like crying though. it’s inspiring. it reminds me of my humanity. i like to feel regular more than i like to feel any kind of “superior” but i also really don’t like to feel misunderstood.. which is what comes with the whole.. regular shit right? right now i feel misunderstood. even though it’s been a while since i’ve been able to properly express myself. i feel like everything around me is a gimmick. i feel guilty for not wanting to share my truths because i don’t wanna be mistaken for the “real” that really isn’t. sometimes i’m discouraged because i sit back and wonder how people are getting over on others by living their lies and not their truths. i’m gonna be honest, probably the first and last time i’ll ever TRUTHfully speak on this matter but, i’ve been irritated lately because i can’t stand a lot of my 'peers’. i’m not into the character they’re trying to be. when did poetry become a business venture? when did poetry become a plot to prey on the broken? and when did the consumer become so.. easy to consume? how we let rh drop 6 books a year about how women should move on from the 'men’ who hurt them WHEN DUDE AINT EVEN A FUCKING WOMAN?! LMFAO. but besides that point, c'mon man. we gotta start questioning and challenging our favorite artists. we gotta stop letting them get by on us. i respect the hustle but art should be more than just that. the “hustle.” you gotta put your heart in that shit to make me a believer. you gotta take your time with that shit to make me wanna read what you been through or where you plan on going from here. period. but again, not to knock anyone’s bread and butter.. i just want us as a collective to start demanding more. we gotta stop being satisfied with the bare minimum because the bare minimum is FUCKING UP ART. everything is becoming watered down. to me 'art’ is a creation from the SOUL. stop consuming and investing in shit that wasn’t made with SOUL AND LOVE. stop letting people out here fool you because they thirsty for attention and money. gahhhhhh. i’m probably being a fucking HATER but it feels good to finally release that. lmfao. moving forward. if y'all haven’t discovered malanda jean claude. go discover him. go find his book on iBooks titled “Because of a Woman”. THIS is a man i will support till the death of me. he’s letting you in on his experiences AS A MAN and telling you that he grew because of these experiences with the women in his life. (or the past women in his life). anyway. idk hope you guys don’t shun me after this. but truth is truth. and fake is fake. and eventually all will come to light. peace. PS: if you haven’t heard frank’s “endless” in totality, go peep. love.

Why do these men keep telling me that pressure is inversely proportional to volume when every morning I wake up, the expanding volume of my thoughts feels like a ship drowning in my skull?

love is easy cartwheels on air, flipping pancakes like sunday afternoons and cotton candy craftbooks and scrapbooks, diary entries starting to thin out in quantity he says the word “because” with purpose like how your name rolls off his tongue with a feeling you can’t pinpoint as something conscious and hazel has never looked more beautiful relationships are not you sometimes wonder if you love more, if he does if your evening runs look more like sprints or marathons, or if either matters so long as you can keep your breath and the recognition that what is built can be broken like promises and patience lingers in the pit of your stomach and so it goes we play dice with this dichotomy like it’s something we roll once as a gamble as if it hasn’t always been anything other than a continuous choice to say yes, yes, yes so i roll tens and sixes and fours and threes say yes to each and let the tide come through l.t

Legends Your Mother Told Me
Natives believe we are the places we are from, whispering, you are these trees, these mountains, this lake to their sleeping babies. Your jawline is tied to the forest, keeping your chin up when you do not want to hold it higher, lost in timberlines. Your shoulders carry these canyons, the deep crevices your ex-lovers could never understand. Your legs are these ravines, white rapids stream cutting through them for centuries, but you still burn and build and cross your bridges.
When your fingers traced my thigh, my collarbone, my lips, you whispered to me softly drifting into sleep, you are these trees, these mountains, this lake.
Not everyone is okay with living like an open wound. But the thing about open wounds is that, well, you aren’t ignoring it. You’re healing; the fresh air can get to it. It’s honest. You aren’t hiding who you are. You aren’t rotting. People can give you advice on how to heal without scarring badly. But on the other hand there are some people who’ll feel uncomfortable around you. Some will even point and laugh. But we all have wounds.
