The Best Ways to Get Started
I usually get asked several times a week how to start a novel. Some writers are afraid to jump right in or they’re unsure of themselves. For many people, writing the first words is the hardest part.
If you’re having trouble getting started, give these tips a try:
Start with an Exciting Scene
You don’t have to start at the beginning. If there’s a particular scene that got you excited about writing in the first place, it’s perfectly fine to jump to it. Write something that gets your heart pounding or really connects you to your characters.
Write a Prologue
Whether you decide to include it or not, writing a prologue can help you get started. What happens before the story you want to write? Use this as an exercise to get into the right mindset.
Pen a Detailed Outline
Many writers need the outlining stage to feel confident about their writing. If you literally have no idea where to start your novel, this will help. Sure, a lot of writers can come up with good ideas without outlining, but this might help keep you organized and possibly prevent writer’s block.
Flesh out Your Characters
Sometimes focusing on characters first helps you understand where they’re going. Get yourself excited about your characters and what their goals are.
Jump to the End
No one said you have to write the first chapter first. If you feel like the ending will help guide your story, jump right to it. Understanding where it all leads to might help you flesh out your novel and provide direction.
