Now we are home. Stopped at Leo’s in Royal Oak before hitting up Kinko’s. Had to get 2 coney’s and spinach pie, Annie had the gyro with a Greek salad. Did you know that Greek dressing isn’t something people know about in California; they were confused when we asked for it.
Annie’s gyro was bomb, nice to have Detroit Greek style food again. If you ever make it to San Luis Obispo though, there is a place called Petra that has the best gyro I have had outside of Michigan.
Bell's Amber and Jimmy Johns. I know JJ's is not a Michigan thing, but wasn't able to find it while in California. Paired with my favorite beer ever, it is a nostalgic combination of flavors. To your health.
There is something tranquil about lights reflecting off of frozen rain covered snow. No doubt it is much colder than California but beautiful none the less. Teva and I have consistently been taking two walks a day since we got him, and simply because it is a bit chilly out is no reason to stop. People in California seem to think the cold is such a debilitating phenomenon that they feel obligated to convince others to stay away from it. Michigan folk are friendly and strong because the environment they surround themselves with. I have been surprised at the approachability, and honest attempts of others to help one another since our return. I am not writing this to bash anyone, but more so to help Michiganders realize that they belong to something bigger than themselves, and that is why I am proud to call this place home.
Yesterday I started on a new tea regiment after a buddy of mine named Brian, who still lives in San Luis Obispo for the time being, told me that because of my chronic stomach problems I should consider moving into red teas instead of green teas. I have never really been a fan of Rooibos so I decided to make it fun for me. So in honor of hockey season and my beloved Red Wings, I am drinking red tea from the Red Wings mug and wearing the hat.
Today is the start of my job search in the Detroit area. So if you know anyone who is looking for a multimedia branding specialist please let me know.
Teva seems a little confused and surprised about the freezing rain that coveres the mounds of snow. He starts to take a test with his paw, but each time is confused when he falls through. He seems to really like being here though, and has been great while we left him alone for the first time earlier today. Been working on getting our stuff out of the car and into the house. The desktop is about to be set up, and the Internet got installed earlier today. I am excited to catch up on some Hulu and Netflix later this evening, as Annie is out at an ItWorks event.
Yup. Missed this too. We were able to find a few places that carried Vernors while we were living out west, but never a selection this size! Perhaps next time we will get some Fago.
Not a great time for my first run in a few weeks. I blame much of it on the ice covered side walks, and the few minutes of vomiting that went on. I did however take a few minutes this morning to take a product called Relief, and spend some time stretching / warming up my ankles before heading out. I highly recommend it. If you take a look at the color chart, you will see the sections where I needed to spend some time "looking closely at the snow bank" just before starting going through the park, and leaving. It was a nice warm up for the day. But the best part of all this, is that using a mobile application called Runtastic I realized that the distance of this loop through the park here in Hazel Park is the same distance as the loop through the park that I did in California. Teva seems to enjoy his time in the snow, and I feel like we were engaging each other more so with that concern for the conditions more so than with our nightly walks in San Luis Obispo.
One more thing we missed. Went to BevMo in SLO in search of this mystic brew over the last few years. And despite being able to find a full flavored Blue, Blue Light was not available. Pairs well with the green lantern pizza. Super excited to be back!
So as the question came up to who has the best pizza in the Detroit area, I am excited that I had the chance to try one that was completely new to me. Veggies tasted fresh, and the meats looked like they were chosen for their quality over price. Perhaps I have been in California too long, but my only complaint is large sized slices. Stomach is trying to adjust back to the almost excessively rich Michigan food, and this week will be filled with some high quality training.
We made it! Annie and Bill just took off for a bit to pick up dinner, and I started moving things from the car into Teva's new place. Since I posted last, we checked into the hotel last night at another La Quinta Inn about 6 hours from Detroit in northern Kentucky. We woke up early, enjoyed the best meal of the trip with some high quality biscuits and gravy at the continental breakfast, and managed to find a variety of terrible drivers in Cincinnati. With the final hour plus spent traveling a total of 4 miles from exit 56 to 60, we were surprised at the amount of salt built up on the windshield, once we entered Michigan. Because of the amount of interest this blog has developed in the last few days, I am going to keep it going to document the remainder of the moving process. Ever wondered if using a Uhaul U-box is safe? Or wondered how many gyros I will eat my first week home? One of the greatest achievements that Michiganders can't get. Wish we had the room for it in the car, as well as knowing alcohol laws for each state between Tennessee and Michigan. Didn't have the time to stop in Nashville like we had planned. Rolled into the city right at rush hour, and had zero interest in deviating from the path. Just passed the city, we found a fire works store / gas station that had m80's on sale. If only we had more time.
Stopped for gas and a quick juggling session just off the highway in Arkansas. The interstate 40 east has been a blessing. We have been on here for what feels like days at this point. Looking to hit Nashville later today.
He's getting the idea now. We get in the car, he sleeps. We get in the hotel, he is Mr. Tough Guy. Weather is fine so far, so much for Thor's battle against the frost giants. It is not enough to even wake Hymdal over here.

With the way the storm is going to be coming through over the next day or so, we are considering driving through the night so as to miss it. Wanted to say thanks to my Aunt Val for mentioning La Quinta Inns and Suites. We ended up staying in small town 20 or 30 minutes from Oklahoma City last night. The dog hasn't been great staying in a communal building these last few nights, but he has been more vocal about his discontents throughout the trip. Today we will be going through little rock Arkansas on our way to Nashville, then starting the ascension north.
Came across a Godfather's Pizza not to far from Oklahoma City. I have never had it despite having done my thesis on rebranding the organization. Picked up the patty melt. As we return to Detroit, the trip has spawned the discussion of best pizza in the region. So what is it? You let us know your thoughts.
