I am always fascinating by the people who live so closely to the remnants of antiquity. Or more accurately, I am fascinated by people’s general apathy towards these historical sites. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This, I believe, is all that is left of a former aqueduct in Selçuk, Turkey. So, I was unceremoniously kicked out of my Airbnb in Istanbul and had no choice but to head to Izmir. Initially, I was pissed, but out of all the drama a grand opportunity arose. I was able to visit this ancient ruin. Built by the Greeks in the 10th century BC, Ephesus became a vibrant city after it was taken over by the Romans in 129 BC. This facade is all that remains of the Library of Celsus. But the best part of my journey there was that I arrived about 20 minutes before the park opened. That meant that I got to explore the grounds and wander among the ruins for about 30 minutes before the bus loads of tourists arrived. One of the most recognizable landmarks are in Izmir, the Clock Tower or İzmir Saat Kulesi in Turkish has stood at the center of Konak Square since 1901.
