How I Met Your Mother is one of my favourite shows in the world. The first time I watched it, the ending broke my heart. The very foundation that the show was built on - The Mother - was not who the story was about. It almost felt like a betrayal to have us root for characters who werenât going to end up together. Years later, today, I just finished re-watching the show. And I have a few pointers on watching it as a 23 year old and not a teenager.Â
What you donât understand when you start watching this series is that you are not signing up for a sitcom, you are signing up for drama, life lessons that believe it or not actually stay with you, heartbreaks and belief in destiny.Â
From the moment Ted and Robin lay eyes on each other, there it is. Destiny. Fate. Timing. Everything. The moment after which life as you know it will never stay the same. When they meet and go on their first date there is obvious attraction. But Ted falls harder than Robin does which messes up their dynamic. After a while when they start dating, they break up because they realize their relationship has an expiration date. Eventually when theyâre both on the same page years late i.e. Robin is finally ready for a serious commitment, she falls for Barney instead. Even at Barney and Robinâs wedding, she almost doesnât go through with it thinking about how Ted is a better fit for her. Moreover, when Ted finally settles down, Robin realizes with more certainty than ever that she should have ended up with Ted.Â
âIf you have Chemistry, you only need one other thing. Timing. But timing is a bitch.â - Robin
This quote above explains the entire dynamic of their relationship. The timing between the two is always off. Whether is due to other relationships, career or frame of mind; timing has always been a bitch to them. Until the end of the show that is - when Ted and Robin are finally single and have achieved everything they wanted to in life. There he is, with the same blue french horn. And there she is, looking down her window with a smile on her face and tears in her eyes.Â
Ted and Robin were endgame from the moment their eyes locked. Call it destiny, coincidence or their own life choices. They were meant to be, but they just had to go about their own way to finally realize that. And this is why, watching HIMYM as a 23 year old didnât break my heart at the end, but rather made me realize that there are things that happen that are beyond our control. And we cannot rush certain things nor foresee them, sometimes we just have to keep doing what we do and hope and pray that the universe is watching and in the end, we will end up where we are supposed to.Â
