hello!

i've missed this little blog. i have been looking in from time to time but i haven't made or posted content in almost 5 years. i wanted to write an update for myself and for anyone interested, since this blog was my internet home for so long.

in short, what happened was that as a very anxious person in general, the pandemic absolutely destroyed my mental health. for years, i was worse than i'd ever been. and engaging in fandom or any kind of media required brain power far beyond what i had available. but this past year has been mostly healing. i feel better. i have a cat again, and she's the sweetest little thing i love her so much. i'm still very much exhausted all the time. but tumblr has been on my mind for the past few months.

before my break i'd been early-sunsets on tumblr since 2009. i'd never felt the need for a fresh start so i never made a new blog. but now i'm thinking a fresh start would be nice. you will find me on @eimyrja. i hope to be making gifs again, but i won't push myself.

Hello :) I was wondering if you have any tips on how to enjoy The Vampire Diaries post season 3 as a Stelena shipper? Is it still worth watching? I recently started the show and was fully expecting to be a Delena shipper (as that's all I'd ever heard about) but my god Stelena stole my heart and my entire soul. I love them :( I think their story was the heart of season 1 and 2 and it was just so pure. Ofc I like the show for other reasons too but just wondered what your thoughts were post S3

Hello and thank you so much for this ask! I'm gonna try to answer it without spoiling anything past season 3 beyond what I think you already know. First of all, I'm glad to hear that Stelena stole your heart! They did the same to me when I first started watching the show almost 10 years ago(!) and even though I haven't watched it in many years now, they still remain one of my top favorite ships.

Elena and Stefan's relationship was the heart of the show. It was supposed to be. That has been acknowledged by the creators multiple times. Nina and Paul were cast largely because of their chemistry. Sadly, the hype for I*n S*merholder twisted the entire series to center around his character when it was originally written to center around Elena and Stefan's relationship. That’s why nothing past season 3 makes sense. Keeping Elena and Stefan apart was never going to work. A few years back the writers even admitted to keeping Elena and Stefan in separate scenes because the actors' chemistry was so good that if they shared screentime no one was going to believe that the characters were not still in love. That says a lot.

It's true that on tumblr you'll have mostly heard about D*lena but that's because tumblr tends to prefer the toxic and abusive male characters over the 'boring' ones that actually try to be good people. I personally think that male characters that have no interest in being good and whose main characteristic is 'hates women' are way more boring than the characters who choose to be good. And Damon spends the majority of the series abusing and killing women because of his 150 year old grudge against Katherine.

I stopped watching TVD around mid-s4 so keep that in mind while I answer your question. Is the show worth watching past season 3? My answer is no. I thought season 1 was amazing. Season 2 was pretty good. Season 3 had its moments. Then the show became unbearable. The reason for why I quit watching entirely was because (spoilers) Elena does not choose to go into a relationship with Damon. She is sired to him, meaning she feels compelled to do anything that will make him happy regardless of her own thoughts or feelings. Damon is aware of this by the time he sleeps with her meaning that he takes advantage of Elena when she is very much unable to consent because her mind is not her own. This is not the first time Damon rapes a woman on the show but it wasn't even treated as such by the narrative. The writers themselves admitted that the only way to separate Elena from Stefan was to basically remove her free will and yet this was never dealt with on the show (end spoilers). It all just got too triggering for me and I couldn't watch anymore. 

All that said, you do what you feel is best for you, anon! If you have enough interest for characters and plots outside of the main three, then maybe it will be worth it for you to give the rest of the series a chance. I know that there are some Stelena moments scattered throughout the rest of the series. If you think you'll always be curious about what happened next, maybe it's better for you to know than to avoid it altogether. For me, Stelena was the main reason I watched the show. I cared deeply about Elena and Stefan as characters and I loved who they were when they were together. When I realised that was all going to be erased to give Damon what he wanted even if Elena had to suffer and her character had to be destroyed in the process, I didn't want to watch that.
