RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.
Happy World Ocean Day! The ocean has been perfecting 🪼 this 🪼 design for more than 500 million years. That's right, sea jellies are older than the dinosaurs! They have adapted to our entire world ocean: from tropical to Arctic temperatures, deep sea to shallow reefs, and freshwater to saltwater, jellies are found in every ocean environment.
Through research and dedication to maintaining the highest standards of care for these animals, the Aquarium of the Pacific has successfully cultured over 40 species of sea jellies. The culmination of years of commitment to these animals has resulted in our newest exhibit, ✨Jelly Dreamscapes✨, which showcases the beauty and tranquility of these gelatinous creatures.
HANDMADE Polymer clay Armadillo sculpture.
I ain’t even saying that Backrooms handled everything perfectly, there might well be a lot to say about the complex web of societal powers that Clark and Mary (and Clark’s ex-wife by extension) both hold over each other. But it is wild to me how many people go for “Clark is a stereotype” like???
Yeah, that overused black stereotype of the nebbish divorced small business owner with a harmful tendency to shift blame for their dissatisfaction onto others. Who sometimes dresses like a pirate on tv.
More backrooms
The backrooms are a failing brain trying to hold onto even the most basic of memories, even as they warp and decay.
The backrooms are generative AI trying to capture something real but only achieving a malformed, mindless imitation.
The backrooms are stagnation, an unwillingness to step into the new and uncomfortable effort of changing, instead running through the same old routine even as it starts to fall in on itself.
The backrooms are nostalgia cannibalizing itself, trying to remake and remake what it already knows without making anything new, until the familiar is so bastardized it's barely recognizable.

When I lived alone.....
I've seen a moth the size of a hand.
It was creepy. No joke.
If you drawing Backrooms fanart you have to do it from memory. For the culture.
i drew this while bored in class 2 years ago
Heavy Backrooms spoilers but that final shot is sticking with me and I wanna ask if people feel the same way about it.
The fact that we don't see Mary's still-life until the very end feels to me like it's implying that it was created by her experiences. That the degradation she underwent, admitting as a therapist that she doesn't know how to "fix" anyone and doesn't honestly believe that she can, somehow directly caused this fractured reflection of her to come into being. I'm sure that within the logic of the movie that it's always been around just in a level none of the characters made it to, but the shot placement feels so intentional to me. The parallel of her sitting at the table across from another man who won't let her go until he gets the answers that he wants from her.
