Project #5 Relabeling
Reading Response
Jenny Holzer
The article portrays Jenny Holzer as a non-traditional artist. The first quote sets that characterization up,“I used language because I wanted to offer content that people—not necessarily art people—could understand. Jenny Holzer.” In the interview she comes off as a highly relatable person. I believe that is what makes her art so effective, she has a great grasp on the world outside the art. She talks about her struggles as an artist in different disciplines, and when she first starting to use language she really didn’t think she was an artist for that. However language is a medium that many people understand and can still be manipulated and displayed.
The most important thing an artist can take away from the effectiveness of including language. Language art is often seen as books and literature. While some of these works may be to long for a simple display, poetry and art displays go hand in hand. The use of poetry can help enhance the work of art it is paired with. Words can help guide the public’s thought on the art they are seeing. Language art has the ability to get more people to see things and to think like the art world.
Robert Montgomery
Robert Montgomery creates all of his art in ALL CAPS, as shown by the article. I think that is a very important method, it stands out. When displayed on something small like paper, all caps gives off a very threatening, emotional tone. However when displayed on something larger it looks normal because the capital letters fill the space. It is more effective when displayed on a wall in a way like graffiti. I really like how Robert spoke about graffiti artists and how he is inspired by them, the two styles are very similar. While graffiti can be only pictures, a lot of it is language based messages.
Graffiti is a type of public art. A lot of times graffiti is pushing a message a very direct and upfront message, because it is meant to be viewed by anybody who walks by it. That is the most important thing to take away from Robert Montgomery's interview. Robert does many things to get his point across. My favorite are his fire poems , where he builds his poems out of wood and lights them on fire. He is very concerned with the message he is sending with his art. You don’t always have to light your art on fire to get your point across, but it can help.
Project #4 Failure Artist Statement
For this project the theme I chose to go with failure. Drawing has never been a strong skill of mine. I wanted to try and challenge myself to draw something that was pretty difficult to draw. A giraffe in the wild served as my inspiration as I attempted to recreate a picture I found online. With my drawing abilities being what they are, I did not want to try and do to much. I feel colors are pretty hard, I usually had trouble staying in the lines in grade school anyway. To draw a giraffe one would probably need to be able to draw straight lines. Fortunately I do not really poses that ability. When brainstorming this project I was slightly worried that I might accidentally draw a beautiful picture of a wild giraffe roaming, thankfully that was not the case in this instance as my giraffe looks pretty horrific. I fail at recreating the image and I believe I did a really good job at doing a bad job.
When thinking of vanishing and disappearing the first thing I think of is fire. Once a fire is started, it can grow or even disappear in a very short amount of time. Fires can become something large and scary, or they can become something very warm and welcoming. I wanted this to be the dominate element of the project, as the most viable and audible element of the clip. The stars in the sky are the other representation in the clip. The stars in the sky are so far away. Some of the stars that we see may not even exist anymore because the light is still traveling.

Artist Statement #2
This series of gifs was very frustrating to complete. I wanted to blend nature videos with technology. Glitching gives off a technological aesthetic. These gifs are the result of corrupting small videos with the audio editing program Audacity. The process of data bending these videos was riddled with trial and error. The glitching part of the process was done with the application of audio effects such as echos, reverb, tremolos ect. These audio files were converted to .avi format, then to .mp4 format, which were then imported into Photoshop, and converted into a gif. Although it was a learning process, seeing how different effects manipulate the video differently was very fun. The glitches very random at first, however I was able to control them more.
Moment Captured Series:
My Inspiration for this project was the contrast between natural life (like animals, those unaware of technology), and the overwhelming world of tech we live in today. I wanted to play with blurring and saturation of colors to emphasize the focal point of the gif which, to me, is the moment we best see the animal, and understand what they are experiencing. Though animals are cliche to post about, I do not care. I love animals and could watch these gifs all day. I loved being able to single out both majestic and awkward moments that these animals experience (just as we all do). I had a hard time deciding what to do and/or incorporate to make these more unique but decided the best way of displaying animals is through their own actions.
I had a similar thought process, the contrast between nature and technology I also could watch these all day!.

PROJECT 2: GLITTER GLAM AND GIRL-TALK
ARTIST STATEMENT
There’s something very special about when girls (or anyone) get(s) together to paint nails. No one is ever stingy about sharing colors. Everyone has a nail polish collection and there’s always the greatest satisfaction that comes out of sporting a new look. I’m sure it’s not just a thing for me but a thing for lots of my fellow feminine beings to have nail parties. it’s a whole process that is cherished by many. it’s an essential time to bond with one another, as within female-folk groups, talk is the glue. i think painting each other’s nails gives us a sense of companionship, necessary when we’re humans who crave being able to put our trust in other people. getting together over painting nails isn’t just about have cute fingers, but communicating with one another on various levels (while being very careful not to FUCK the paint up, y’all know how stressful that can be…). it’s a time full of coding among each other, we even seem to know how to communicate with little no words at all. nonetheless, it’s all in the act of painting nails. I put out a public request for people to send me photos of their hands in the name of every sacred moment they’ve spent with someone else over painting nails. This was the result of the help from those closest to me, many of whom i have had nail parties with myself. Not to mention, i love the timelessness/endlessness of gifs that sparkle, so i made that the subject point of each piece. I also chose a rainbow pallet to suit the theme of all the colors you have to choose from when painting your nails.
I MADE A MISTAKE IN LINKING THIS BLOG TO MY PERSONAL BLOG BECAUSE I JUST KEEP POSTING ON MY MAIN AND UGH so sorry but here’s my project :’)
