I was watching an ep of svu the other day about a woman copilot who was r*ped and harassed by a head pilot who she flew with a lot and she tried to report it just to be put in the cockpit w him again so she had a panic attack being so close to him and when he was in the bathroom shortly after takeoff she took control of the plane and attempted to turn them around to get back to the airport bc she couldn’t be in that tiny space w her abuser for another second. And everyone on board thought the plane was being hijacked so when the disgusting r*pist head pilot broke back into the cockpit and got them safely back on course everyone lauded him as a hero. And it becomes more than just an issue of this one head pilot, because of course the airline knew good and well what this pilot had done, both to that woman and to others, but since he was like the face of the airline they promised the women promotions if they kept their allegations private.

So one of the things that ends up happening is the airline says that they felt they “had” to put this woman in the cockpit with her r*pist bc she was the only woman pilot on their roster and it would “look bad” to not have her in the air. But there were private memos going around their office about how women are really “unsuited” for the pilots job because they’re too “volatile” and make unpredictable choices and cave under pressure. And when prompted they cited the woman taking control of the plane to back up their point. Like look what this woman did when we gave her the opportunity. Women aren’t strong enough for this job.

And it got me thinking a lot about the oft-cited sexist adage that suggests women “can’t” assume major positions of power bc they don’t have the mental fortitude to handle it without being overly “emotional” or “irrational.” And I realized theres actually a horrific and intricate dialectical at play there. Bc really men aren’t wrong when they say women are more likely to crack under exorbitant pressure. What they don’t understand (or perhaps do understand but would never admit) is that THEY themselves are the ones causing that phenomenon. Because in addition to the regular pressures of the job itself, a woman in a powerful or typically male-occupied position is forced to work under constant objectification, sexual harassment or even violence, heightened scrutiny and surveillance of her activities, all with the knowledge that people (men) are quite literally waiting for her to screw up or “freak out” so they can say they were right all along. This isn’t even mentioning the general air of suspicion, that charged atmosphere, the direct pleasantries followed by obvious closeted disdain, the on-edge feeling women are forced to carry everywhere because they know in their gut when they are met with hostility, even if the people perpetrating it do so with a smile. So women have to endure all of this in ADDITION to doing the duties of their job. And it’s no fucking accident.

Men CREATE a workplace culture, a SOCIETAL culture, in which women are tested and tested and tested, pushed and pushed and pushed, pulled and prodded and poked every single day until eventually, after enduring for longer than a man EVER could, they snap. And then those same men will say “I was right. I knew a woman couldn’t handle this job,” like it’s the content of the position itself that drove her to break down. It’s not the fucking job — what she couldn’t handle was YOU. She couldn’t handle the overwhelming reality of YOUR hatred of women, of the subtle and not-so-subtle ways YOU display that hatred, the way you and your colleagues deseminate that hatred until the air around her is almost thick with it, multiplied tenfold by the level of power the position wields. You don’t think she belongs so you make sure she doesn’t. All according to fucking plan

Or, and hear me out, perhaps *paranoia toward your neighbors* is not exclusive to right wingers, and gun accidents, suicides by firearm, and firearm-related domestic violence will still happen regardless of a gun-owner’s political orientation. Maybe, just maybe, the idea that leftists with guns will use them solely to “fight fascists in the streets” is a ridiculous, hyper-masculinist fantasy that sounds curiously like right wingers who imagine themselves as heroes mowing down terrorists and criminals (and anyone who rejects them sexually.) Maybe adopting one of the absolute worst, most dehumanizing parts of right wing American culture is not an ethical framework on which to hang your supposedly left-wing politics

I honestly can’t think of any attempt at “left-wing gun culture” could ever satisfy me that men who only use their guns to “fight fascists” aren’t also, behind closed doors and in large numbers, using those guns to terrorize the women in their lives. I can’t really trust that you could reform gun culture so that it doesn’t send the message that that behavior is cool.
