Just the fact that she was so certain that things were going ‘so well’ made Indy want to put up more fight, but that was teenagers in a nutshell. He didn’t trust it, but the fact that she was so enthusiastic about history wasn’t hurting her case, even if he got the distinct feeling that she wasn’t being honest about something. Probably multiple somethings, and he’d learned long ago to trust his instincts. The fact that she was a teenager just meant that it wasn’t necessarily anything important that she was lying about or evading him on, but it didn’t change the paranoia.
The paranoia was joined by a much more grounded fear that something dangerous would happen and she wouldn’t be prepared to handle it, but wasn’t that the story of his life? Like so many others, she’d likely experience a wild ride and then never want to do it again. The conversation with the teacher went well, as she’d expected it would, but Indy might have scored her a more involved homework assignment than she might have liked, which he wasn’t sorry about. If she was going to show up, she was going to put in the work, damn it. It wasn’t until they left the office, permission granted and a big project ahead of her, that Indy glanced her way. "You still in, kid?“
In a way, things had gone even smoother than she’d thought they were. Not that she was complaining. It was like a sign that things were finally starting to turn around for her. There was nothing that’d tear this opportunity away from her now and he’d have to be crazy to think that a little extra work was going to scare her away. When the choice was between sitting in classes all day or going to another country with the Indiana Jones, the decision was pretty simple.
“A little extra work isn’t gunna scare me away. Just tell me when we leave and how little to back,” she replied, standing firm in her decision. Had he really thought a complicated work assignment was going to make her reconsider or had that assignment been agreed upon for some other reason? The brunette wasn’t entirely sure. She was more focused on calculating how much money was currently in her bank account and if she’d be able to cover for a better backpack than the one she currently had. Something told her that the cheap messenger bag she owned wasn’t going to hold up well where they were going.
