Is it finished? A large artwork.
A major painting.
A memorial portrait.
I wasn’t able to make a funeral, so instead made this. DK Gouache and Acrylic on watercolour paper. Based on the Fayum portraiture style. My dad always liked them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fayum_mummy_portraits An early teaser study which I like but crucially, doesn’t look like him. A Fayum portrait, made in encaustic.
Early 2026 sketches.
Ate the V&A sketching plaster casts and a probable Leonardo sculpture (one of my favourite ever sculptures) and at the Peter Doig exhibition whose paintings leave me baffled – though I loved the speakers and Lawrence djing. Michael Clark was there choreographing some work but alas, I couldn’t see over the heads.https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/whats-on/peter-doig-house-of-music/ Bowie Day at…
Xmas Drawings 2025.
One of my sons. Two pencils. On cartridge A3.Notice the changes in time and size. I’m really happy when people move. I am a recorder that records time and space… maan…Hard to photograph pencil sketches. Xmas day chats. Two pencils. On cartridge A3.Notice how I keep a bit of people’s privacy by not drawing portraits. Reflections are fun. As is moving and carrying on drawing. And drinking and…
Family portraits.
Candles, a tube journey & chocolate.
Derbyshire Tree drawings.
Padley Gorge Upper Stream. Pencils on A3 sketchbook.A frenetic 20 minutes. Burbling water winding through the landscape. Notice the people in the background. The Colours were just the ones I had at the time. Padley Gorge Tree (My favourite one). Pencil on A3 sketchbook.I love this tree. Over the year I’ve passed it many times, photography my children on it and sketched it a few times. In the…
Thailand & Cambodia - A3 works.
A worldly or divine Apsara អប្សរា from Angkor Wat អង្គរវត្ត. Paint and pencil on A3 watercolour paper. The original reliefs on the vast temple were painted, mostly in red pigment. This artwork was taken from a few different sources. An astounding place. An 8am view from the hotel roof of Bangkok. Pen on paper. Then put into photoshop and coloured.I was saying to my daughter I’d like to do more…
Thailand / Cambodia sketchbook
Handmade paper sketchbook. 19x14cm. Pencils, Pens, Watercolour. It speaks for itself. The sketchbook was originally bought in India around 30 years ago. Most of the work was made in a recent holiday in Thailand and Cambodia. You can see where I went and what I saw. Sometimes drawing while walking. Loved it.
‘The Family’ A family portrait by proxy.
Red Mirror: 1/2/4 Women
Red Mirror: 1/2/4 Women Acrylic, oils on a pre-used canvas. 80 x 120cm Two and a half hours in front of the model, who was posing twice in front of a mirrorin a dance studio. Hence the title. Worked on at home over a few years. Quite large. People seem to like it. Just exhibited it. A lot of thinking about the colour values and the idea of the picture plane versus real perspective.Influenced…

This was a personal project – a riposte to just using computers for everything. I wanted to get back to exploring texture, craft and a more human approach.
Caravaggio Sketches.
My wife and I went to Rome to see the Caravaggio 2025 exhibition, which was obviously very good.I made some sketches there of a work you couldn’t photograph and a work that has always interested me compositionally. Ecce Homo Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi, 1571-1610) The conversion of Saul to Paul (first version) Plus my hand on the plane home…
