Summer's End
This blog has been sorely neglected, but hey, I'm not trying to live here either. Updating with some fun upcoming projects after a summer of working on new music/instruments and being a music lab hermit in the New Orleans summer heat.
some dates for September 2014:
4 (tonight) - I'll be supporting my buddy Morgan D. Carson of the Kid Carsons at the Plus One Show along with W.B. Givens, David Shirley, and David Hart (of the Kid Carsons). If you're not familiar with the Plus One Show, read up on it from the link above^ it's a gas
8 - At 10pm I'll be joined by guitarist Daniel Schroeder for my first set at the Neutral Ground Coffee House since I began playing in New Orleans in 2009. It's a quiet little spot uptown where Daniel and I will be performing our duo set for the first time. Do come and spend an hour with us, Daniel is an incredible musician and we touch on a variety of influences, all channeled through the simple aesthetic of guitar and upright bass.
11 - w/ Antoine Diel at the Monteleone Hotel (5-8pm)
w/ Meghan Stewart at Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar (9pm-midnight)
16 - w/ saxophonist Bryce Eastwood at the Other Bar on Freret St. We will be tackling music by Puerto Rican saxophonist Miguel Zenon
19 - w/ Maggie Koerner at O'Daly's Irish Pub (Mobile, AL) (opening for the Revivalists)
20 - w/ singer Antoine Diel at the Fountain Lounge, located in the Roosevelt Hotel in the New Orleans CBD
more to come!
back to the fender rhodes before the PlusOne Show (maybe one day I'll play this in public too)
Shifting Energy
I sit typing in a cafe in Flagstaff, Arizona, on the last leg of a tour that began on May 21st, and also at the end of a period of traveling that began on May 8. It’s been a wild ride, touring in a van across America, seeing many cities for the first time, or at least for the first time in a very long time. St. Louis, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and tons of cities in between.
Touring is a good opportunity to see new places, meet new people, and deliver your musical message in a variety of contexts. It brings me closer to the instrument I’m touring with, and fills me with ideas to execute once I come home to the instruments I’m missing. This includes my recently-purchased fender rhodes piano, with which I can’t wait to start composing.
I’ve also had the chance to play with/meet a new batch of great musicians; the mastermind behind this last tour, Cliff Hines, has been a great bandleader to work with. Also in the mix, vocalist Sasha Masakowski, and drummers G Maxwell Zemanovic and Charles Burchell- amazing musicians, one and all. It’s stimulating and broadening to encounter new musicians and get thrown into a tour among people with whom you’ve never played. It’s been a good run.
I’ll be returning to New Orleans in a few days, finally stopping to organize many projects I have happening this summer. Some recording projects/finished albums with friends that will, for now, remain nameless. Some new compositions and projects of my own- and of course reconnecting with all my people back home and playing around New Orleans again for the first time since early May.
Some upcoming shows:
June 21 - One Eyed Jack’s, New Orleans, LA (w Andrew Duhon)
June 22 - Mobile, AL (venue TBA) (w Andrew Duhon)
June 23 - Fairhope, AL (venue TBA) (w Andrew Duhon)
June 28 - Blue Nile (downstairs) - New Orleans, LA (w/ Cliff Hines)
June 30 - Maison, New Orleans, LA (w/ Brad Walker)
July 2 - Open Ears, Blue Nile Upstairs, New Orleans, LA (w/ Georgi Petrov)

Travels / Tour Dates
Hi, friends. Coming to you now from Toronto, Ontario, where I am staying for a week in between tours (the ladyfriend resides here).
Before traveling here, I had the good fortune to tour with the Brad Walker Quartet/Quintet through Louisiana and Texas (Baton Rouge, Austin, Houston, Lafayette, New Orleans) with a host of formidable human beings/musicians. I managed to personally record all but two of the shows; the other two were professionally recorded and filmed, so there should be plenty of great material from our short venture. A big thank you to Brad and the guys who made the magic happen: Oscar Rossignoli, Sam Wiseman, Brian Seeger, Chris Alford, Simon Lott, Reagan Mitchell, and Larry Max.
I'll be back in New Orleans late-night on Monday (tomorrow), and hitting at the Saturn Bar on Tuesday night with the Cliff Hines Band. We'll be packing up right after the gig to hit the road for a 5-week tour to the West Coast and back (details here). If your city is a stop on the tour, come see us/hang with us/dig the music. I love traveling, and getting to know new people is one of the best parts, so please join us if we're in your area!

Hi, friends. The link above will bring you to Brad Walker (saxophone)'s website. Particularly, a page with information about his tour in May that will include Sam Wiseman (drums), Oscar Rossignoli (piano), and myself on bass. Check it out, and if we're performing in your city, please come and hear the music!
Hi, friends. I’m working every day to expand the content of my website. In the meantime, enjoy this photograph of Punkin with a 60s Hagstrom H-II.
