As much as he's aware and has a clear understanding of when Ormund's about to go, he can't help but stay around just in case he gets that love or admiration. Like at the end of episode four, after he's killed a man, he gets that sense of affection from Ormund. There's something kind of twisted where he knows, morally, what he's done, but he also longs for this kind of affection. // He would look at me with literally misty eyes, and I could see the love and the need. This boy deprived of a parent, a loving individual, a mentor. He would look into the eyes of this vicious, manipulative man and see gratitude and love.

There's an intentional parallel between this scene and Aegon sitting the throne in episode one of season two where they have a very similar first experience dealing with their public.
