Wagenia/ Wagenya Fishermen
The Wagenya (Enya ethnic group) live in Kisangani, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are known and famous for their fishing technique. Fishing and the Congo river are a central part of Wagenya life. Wagenya boys undergo circumcision around the age of 12, the ritual is done on the banks of the Congo river and the foreskin is thrown into the river after the ceremony has concluded. The Wagenya say the Congo river is the river of their ancestors, legends states that a Wagenya can never die in the river because their ancestors’ village is located under the falls and it protects them. Fishing is part of Wagenya culture, the knowledge of how to build tolimo-s is passed down father to son. The tolimo-s are a collective symbol of Wagenya culture and identity. This tradition has existed hundreds of years before Henry Morton Stanley first observed them in 1877.

The Cataracts by Andrew McConnell
In 1876 the explorer Henry Morton Stanley first encountered the Lualaba River in what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo. Stanley was convinced that the Lualaba was connected to the great Congo River which the Portuguese had first sighted 400 years earlier on Africa’s west coast. Although easier than traveling across country the river offered dangerous sailing, especially when his expedition encountered the Wagenia ethnic group and the cataracts of the middle Congo.
The cataracts were a series of seven rapids stretching over 100km and around which Stanley was forced to drag his boats while continuously facing attack from the Wagenia. He was to lose many men to the rapids and the Wagenia’s arrows, but in the end the locals could not match the firepower of Stanley’s modern rifles. Stanley named the cataracts Stanley Falls and was to found the settlement of Stanleyville after the last cataract, where the river once more became navigable and where at last it became the Congo River.
