   The Onceler frowns, recognizing that this argument has the potential to get very cyclical very fast. “I don’t,” he says, anyway, stubborn to the very last.

   “And you’re really telling me that people can’t make mistakes in life and still be successful?” He does not recognize anything that transpired in his life as a mistake, really, and anyone would be hard-pressed to get him to admit to ones he may or may not have made. But he knows Cora doesn’t feel the same way about absolutely all of her history, and he is trying to weaponize some of her former words against her.

   “Far be it for you”—there is a sharp tone of judgment in his voice, as if he can’t forget the autobiography about which she is so open—“to completely disregard somebody’s opinion just because of who they’ve gotten with in the past.”

   Maybe that statement from him would be more valid if he kept it just in the past and wasn’t still picking out the worst guys in every club he went to…

"Yeah. I can picture it...like they do some of the stranger perfume ads, or luxury cars." That's not all bad. He always finds those campy advertisements fun and, on occasion, finds himself impressed with the composition of the shots. He never thought he'd be half of the creative force behind one, but...

"Okay. Fuck it. No face from me, medium on the edge...I can do this, I think. What's my turnaround time? It won't take all that long, but I'd still like to come up with at least two complete variations so you can decide what you like best and have your video editors go from there. I'm not as good at that as a professional, so I'm sure you don't want me on that task, too." He does well for what he is, but he's a youtuber. That's where it stops and ends. Those sorts of bare-bones effects aren't going to wow the world, and that's what this is going to come down to. If this is going to be his first foray into advertising, he wants it to be something he can be proud of...even if he does feel like he sold out down the line.

   The Onceler is ecstatic that he finally got Lance to agree to it. He wears most people down eventually, but he was considering giving up on this one. At a certain point, it’s not worth the effort.

   “Oh, good!” he says. “A couple different versions would be excellent, and you don’t have to worry about video editors. I do have those covered.” He has seen the effects on Lance’s work, and it’s not that he doesn’t trust the guy, but… well… he doesn’t trust the guy. Not to make a relatively high-production commercial, anyway. While he likes to snatch up new talent where he can get it, he also understands the importance of specializations and doesn’t want to force anyone into a roll in which they would not be comfortable. It’s much better to assign people only a task or two at a time and delegate the rest to others.

   “Can you do a week? Or ten days? I guess I could push it out to two weeks, but that might be cutting it a little close.”

    "For a time, yes. I designed my outfits when I danced at the speakeasy I worked for," she smiled. "A good friend of mine always gave good advice. Juniper's her name. I ought to get you two to meet one day! She's very ... uptight, but just the sweetest kitty ... "

    A smile crossed her face, thoughts of sweetness running into her head before the bubble popped. "Oh! Right, my ... ahem, my designs. I enjoy a more fluid take on clothes. Ones to dance in, you know. I may have photos from my time as a flapper girl in my suitcase if you're interested.

    "But that is a job offer I may look for. With your knowledge on this Thneed product, it's ... interesting. It feels soft and smooth, like spider silk ... Where does this come from? If I may ask."

   “Oh, that would be perfect,” the Onceler said. “I love dancing, too.” Of course, he danced rather differently than Moxie, he was sure, and he usually wore tight clothes during, but this was also about what would appeal to the public, not just himself. People could already fashion their Thneeds into flowy dresses, but it would be nice to have the designs for commercials and magazines, as demonstration for the less creatively inclined.

   “The material comes from the truffula tree. There is only one place where they grow, and my factory is situated right in the middle of that valley for ease of access.” He sounded proud of that, as if completely unaware of the environmental implications. “I could give you the tour of the place if you would be interested.” And why wouldn’t she be?

    It was a first to have her ideas be heard by a man all about fashion. If it were any other man, it would take attempts at tantrums and threats of walking off the project to let her ideas be taken seriously. And most cases where she was, products sold. She was a woman of knowledge, and she wasn't about to let that be soiled over a man's opinion.

    Though, with the Onceler, she couldn't help but smile at his remarks. He knew his fashion, and she couldn't help but respect that.

    "It takes a woman to know the basics of fashion," she smiled with a soft wink. "Taking up a part-time costume designer job as taught me many, many things about being a little fashionista. It makes the magazines and advertisements convincing that you know something, no?

    "Besides, we can always experiment. What works best can be the thing to make your Thneed sell."

          “You’re a costume designer?” the Onceler said, immediately drawn in by that description.  Even though he has total confidence in his own abilities, being successful often involves recruiting more talent with which to surround yourself.  And he was not so closed-minded as to think that talent could not be found in a woman, although it would be a mistake to call him ‘progressive’ by any stretch of the imagination.

          More so, he simply didn’t see her as a threat, and that made him more inclined to want to hire her, rather than sabotage her.

          “When we’re done here, I’d be interested in seeing some of your designs.  Maybe I’ll commission you for something.”  He didn’t offer her a full-time gig off the bat because he wanted to see how she worked first, and he didn’t know what kind of contract she was under with her current job, or if she was even still doing that kind of work.

          “I’m always interested in diversifying.”

"Traditional haggis was made either during or after a hunt, so the easiest way to make sure that all of the animal was used was to use the organs there. Made it easier to transport as well." Some countries had banned the most traditional way of preparing it, she thinks, which was why the recipe had ended up changing over the years. "Now they either use the intestines or synthetic casings, depending on where you go or buy it from... I suppose you could eat the casing now, but intestines aren't often palatable."

Agnes wouldn't call herself bold with her tastes by any stretch of the word, but she did have a soft spot for dishes that others would steer clear of. Learning about the history of meals made her feel more connected to people, food has and will always be a universal gatherer. "You cut it open and serve it on something more starchy, which I think is a little more fun as well. It's one of those meals that is served best with side dishes." The texture of intestines specifically is one that Agnes can't stand, and she has stayed away from dishes with similar textures because of it.

She really should start to stock some sort of proper creamer if the Onceler is going to start hanging around as much as he does with the Archivist. While that thought does get her moving again to prepare a cream pitcher and hunt down her sugar dish, she is listening close for his reaction to hearing Simon's name. Her worries fall away as soon as she turns around to see his smile, bringing the dishes to the table and setting them down in front of the Onceler. "He is an acquired taste to some," She says, chuckling. Simon managed to somehow be more eclectic than all of the other avatars combined, and it had endeared her to him almost instantly.

"But he is hard to reach." Whether that be due to him being busy, or something like Peter Lukas where he simply did not want to be contacted, she's not sure. Agnes tries to avoid talking about Elias whenever possible with Simon, knowing the same thing about him that the Onceler does. He would likely end up choosing Jonah over anyone else if he was forced to do so, despite his claims. "I swear that he knows when I want to go out before I do, showing up at my door before I have the chance to even try to reach out to him."

Glancing back at the coffee machine with the intent to pass it off as her simply checking the progress and certainly not to laugh at his reaction, Agnes waits a moment so she can compose herself. "The one I go to is every Tuesday and Saturday," There are several more around, of course, on other days of the week but they are a little further away. She turns back to him, smiling. "There are more vendors and longer ours on Saturdays, though. I believe the one next week might have some live performances as well, if you'd like to pencil that in."

          “Oh, that makes senses,” the Onceler says.  He cannot deny that it is interesting to learn about traditional food and how it’s prepared.  He has always had a fondness for cooking, so this is up his alley, even if it’s not the kind of thing he would consider making.  “They would have had to keep that meat somewhere, and it wouldn’t do them any good to have it loose in their travel bags.”  He grimaces, thinking about what a mess that would be.

          “I bet there are still people who make it the original way, just not publicly.”  It is somewhat disappointing that he won’t be able to experience it in its original form, unless he can find someone in some little village somewhere that would be willing to make it for him, which he is not about to take the time to seek out.  The larger part of him is relieved by the information about synthetic casings, anyway.  “I mean, who is there to really stop somebody from doing it in their own home if they want to?”

          For the Onceler, Simon was not an acquired taste.  He had taken to the man immediately and later found out that Elias had not wanted the two of them to meet at all, perhaps because they were so similar to one another.  “That’s funny,” he says, “because people say the same thing about me.  Whatever the taste is, you must have acquired it a while back.”

          The Onceler doesn’t think that Simon is really ‘busy,’ at least not in a traditional since, just that he finds ways to keep himself from getting bored.  He doesn’t have to work as hard to pencil people into his schedule, even if he seems to have it quite full.

          “I did notice that about him, that he just kinda comes and goes as he pleases, swishes in and out of the room in the same second.  I like that, though; it keeps him interesting.”

          He smiles back at her and says, “Saturdays work better for me, anyway.  I don’t have to come up with an excuse to not be in the office during regular business hours.  So, Saturday it is.”

“ OH, BELIEVE ME, it'll be outfitted with the best tech gemkind has to offer. we're going to set up a base on the nearest moon, to observe as we begin the creation of a new kindergarten. then, when my soldiers have begun emerging, we can watch the planet be turned into something useful & beautiful from the base. doesn't that sound thrilling? ”

          The Onceler’s brow furrows.  He doesn’t know a lot about aliens or the wars that they get up to, and he is sure that he doesn’t want to.  He has been perfectly content conducting his own business so far, and he hopes that whatever Pink Diamond has in mind won’t interfere with it much.

          “Soldiers?” he asks, perhaps a little naively.  “What do you need a bunch of soldiers for?”

Looking at him over steepled fingers, her stare boring into him, she listens. His deflection, the twisting of her argument, it told her all that she needed to know. She didn't expect him to know everything about the trees, no, it would be unreasonable to expect anyone to know every single thing about a plant, but she would have expected him to list off a few things to her. At this point, she doesn't expect the scientists to know anything either. While Ava doesn't know that the Onceler is the first human to actively start chopping down the trees, she knows science. Properly studying things took time, and from what she's gathered they haven't had nearly enough time to do so in a way that would change things before it was all gone. Any mature trees they could have used would have most likely been gone already, and studying the stumps could only provide so much information.

"Would you let me talk to them, then?" To satiate her own curiosity, if nothing else. Ava grins at him from behind her hands before she drops them, sitting back up and leaning towards him. "I'm curious, I like to learn about things. I had expected you to at least tell me a couple things, but if you're not going to I only have two options to turn to."

If the Onceler denied her access to his scientists, then the only avenue she had was the Lorax, whom she is going to be speaking to whether he liked it or not. "I'm trying to offer to help you while I am still here. Do you want me to or not?" She does want the Onceler to continue to succeed, and she assumes that he wants to as well. It would behoove him to at least indulge her a little bit, in Ava's very biased opinion. He had cut out the only other option, and here it was presented to him again. "You've got one magical person sitting right in front of you who really wants to help you. I can't promise you that my necromancy would help the trees get back to a better state, but I know I can do something if I have as much information as I can."

          The inquiry into whether or not he would like her to talk to his scientists makes his blood run cold.  The realization that he has backed himself into a corner is dawning on him.  He gazes back at her with wide eyes at first, heart hammering in his chest, before he shrugs, trying to make himself look nonchalant.  He figures his only option at this point is to back down a little, to concede to something, just to get her to shut up and leave him alone.

          “Sure, go for it,” he says.  “It will give you something to do for an hour or two, get you out of my hair.”  Really, he doesn’t mind her being here as a general rule, but she is making him uncomfortable with all of her questions, her showing that she knows more than he does.  And while researching does take time, he is sure that his people have something they could tell her that might satiate her curiosity.  “I hired plant people from universities and shit, so I know that they’re doing good work.  I know where my talents are and play into those while they play into theirs.”

          He knows that she is going to talk to the Lorax eventually, too, and has made at least some peace with that, as much as he is able.

          “You know I don’t really need your help, either, right?”  As helpful as it would be to have someone who could restore dead cells, the wounds to his ego might be a little much for him to bear in the end.  “So, you don’t have to feel like you really owe me anything in that regard.”

If Ava had wanted to kill him, she would have done it by now. For all of the Onceler's petty comments, none were so damning that they would have pushed her towards murder. A handful of them certainly toed the line, but that was a good thing in a way, as it gave her the chance to learn to reign herself in. One of these days, if they continue along that path, he is going to end up with a broken bone though.

"They're a little better about the flittin' around thing when there's someone on 'em," For a moment, Ava had forgotten that planes did not, in fact, hover like some space craft were able to and had been about to question what he was talking about. "But yeah, the hoverin' is pretty normal." Her dragonflies weren't exactly like their smaller counterparts, but the flying was for the most part a close match.

The magic they were created from was probably the biggest different, she doesn't think there are many dragonflies that have the ability to kamikaze at a moment's notice. "Peony's ready whenever you are, just give me a heads up before you wanna start hovering." For no other reason than Ava wanting to have her full focus on them as soon as the insects wings start moving. "We'll be sittin' here, keepin' an eye on you."

          They are incredibly well-behaved, but it makes sense, considering Ava can just inject her will into their minds.  They move fine independently of her, like unconscious processes, the electrical current of the brain fueling breathing or the heart beating with no input from the individual.  But then, she can take more direct control of them whenever she likes.  How convenient it would be to have that same ability with his employees, leaving them to do their own work but being able to immediately wrangle them back to their stations when they get distracted.

          It is fortunate that he does not have any power over such creatures because he would not be nearly as responsible with it as Ava is.

          One doesn’t usually think too hard about dragonflies having muscles, but he can feel Peony’s powerful flight muscles flexing under his legs.  It really isn’t too different from sitting atop a horse except that the muscles were in uncannily strange places.  She is clearly ready for take off, and he supposes that he is as prepared as he is ever ging to be.  He can’t think of anything better to do to prepare himself, so he gives Ava a nod.

          “I should be ready now.”

    "I think I have quite a few necklaces. A few with pearls and ... diamonds ... a few chokers, what might catch your eye." She had preferences in how she dressed outside of photoshoots, but this was different. For something so soft and affordably comfortable, perhaps pearls were best. Thoughts were crossing her mind as she quickly left to find her suitcase.

    She returned quickly with the items she was looking for. In one hand was the selection of necklaces that she noted, and the other had two different skirts; one with glitter and sparkles, and the other with a more softer and silkier look.

    "I'd like to suggest the pearls. They go best with the Thneed," she suggested with a smile. "And if I may ask ... Onceler sir, do you have another project in mind aside of your Thneed? Perhaps jewelry or ... different accessories? I hear older styles are coming back in style."

          “Oh, yes, I think pearls will be lovely,” he cooed, clasping his hands together next to his cheek.  He was more of a diamond person himself, or emeralds, but he liked to wear white or brown fur with them respectively, neither color of which the Thneed came in.  He had big ambitions for the Thneed taking over the entire fashion industry, but ironically, he had a special weakness for other fabrics and colors.

          “They would lay very nicely against the Thneed’s fluff, I think.”

          While the Thneed was currently great for items like socks and skirts and pillowcases, the way it was made resulted in it being too big to turn into necklaces and earrings and the like.  There was still that huge market just waiting for him to tap into it.

          “I would like to offer little accessories, yes.  Maybe mini Thneeds that we sell for half the price.  We might have to get more people to hand-knit them.  The machines are great, but they’re too big for that kind of meticulous detail work.  I’ll have to invest in smaller ones eventually.”

          He looked at her very carefully and added, “You’re full of some not-so-bad ideas, aren’t you?”
