New Amsterdam really is doing it like no one else.
Episode 1: new job, separation, pregnancy and cancer. Buddy that's about 4 seasons of life in one episode. Who decided this was where to start the series?? I desperately need to shake their hand because thank the fucking lord I don't have to deal with that relationship drama, ain't nobody got time for that.
Then- this show. I know like NOTHING about medicine (besides about 3 things, which have partially come up, and were dealt with in um slightly magical ways), but I love this show.
It's really just doing it unlike any other medical show, and I think I've narrowed it down to three things:
1) They Aren't. Doing. Illegal. Shit
This is where my friend told me I was directly calling out House and it's a little bit true...but even my other love, The Resident, has an awful lot of 'we'll do it this way, because it will help this one particular patient'. And New Amsterdam doesn't! It goes 'if the system isn't working for this person, we don't bend the rules, we rewrite them'. They find insurance schemes, they tell patients the whole truth about their options, they strike, they try their damnedest to accomplish socialism, but they aren't breaking the safeguards in place. If they get called out for something, they respect it, and due process gets followed. I love it
2) it's not about fighting authority
Guess what; the main character IS the authority for most of the others. He's in charge of a lot of stuff, and he's working with his higher ups to sort out the problems. They aren't fighting to 'get one over' on people, because the authority is not seen as the problem- the system is! They're working for the people, all of them, and that is the focus.
3) There Is A Psychiatrist
Boy oh buddy, why don't other shows have a central psychiatrist. Every time he appears I'm like 'an adult!! Someone who will de-escalate the problem!' because he is just out here, respecting patients and his coworkers alike, and they actually listen to each other and damn. There are kids around most episodes and I think I'm learning how to handle outbursts and interpersonal issues from this man. He's just patient and kind, and dealing with the actual things the hospital needs him to deal with. Also! Did I mention he is gay and has a husband and two (three? Only met one so far) lovely adopted kids? He is the best.
Anyway I think what I'm saying is that if you like medical shows, go watch New Amsterdam! Big fan thus far
