The bonus links animatic I’ve been wanting to do ever since I read part 2 of Bonding Exercise from Moments Between by ezdot!
I couldn’t get the imagine of Mage floundering about on the ice and falling with War sick and suffering watching Mage in the background. I also started reading Witch Hat Atelier, which has absolutely stunning cloaks and draping fabric that inspired me to animate Mage’s cloak for this
link to the update here, I forgot I was supposed to be doing that lol
ANYWAY
this bit was actually supposed to be at the end of the last update, but I ran out of room on the page and didn't wanna sacrifice the moment. It's only 3 panels and all they do is look at each other lol but I feel like it says a lot about what War and HW Zelda's relationship is like. people have also pointed out it's a parallel to how they first meet in the game, which i didn't even do on purpose 😂 but yeah it certainly is
obviously the difference in their status is made visual with Zelda looking down on him from the balcony, but it's also worth noting that like. Zelda doesn't get to be a part of the gathering. She's relegated to a painting looking down on high like the goddesses on the ceiling
there was meant to be a scene after this that I cut where War goes back to his rooms and changes into his travel/hero outfit. I really wanted to show him essentially putting the persona back on, but I started to feel like I was languishing in this opening lol. we've got to get to business
this man is hungover. he has not slept. it's 1 william degrees on Death Mountain. he's frying out here he's unwell. excellent mission start
actually on that note I realized that at some point they are standing in the springs talking and that would potentially healing little. so like you can probably barely tell because of the lighting effects but I gave him shadows under his eyes that lighten over the course of the update lol I also made his face flushed :-)
Impa is 10000% just being evil to him here lmao. I almost took that gag in the corner out but was convinced on patreon to keep it in 😂 war works really hard to maintain his good boy face, but we can't win every battle LMAO also war might not like Impa, but rest assured he will do whatever she says.
okay so. this is a completely made up spring of power. I rlly had a rule for myself that I was not going to just make up locations for the rifts bc I wanted it to be places that are actually significant to the games, but I completely misremembered where the spring of power was in BOTW and got myself in this situation 😂 I got it switched with the hot springs, which is where Ive placed this. this time travel shift is gonna be a little bit of a stretch to the next location bc of it but shhhhhhh. That statue is of Din rather than the traditional Hylia one. we now have our three storylines, each starting at a spring; courage, wisdom, and now power
ALSO MISS LANAAAAAAAAA yeah there was no way i was gonna use much of her canon design. heart emoji. love the j-pop idol thing but it's really not the vibe. Ive made the choice to model her clothing design after the Guardians in skyward sword. this is a mouseketool we'll be using later :-))))) tho I did end up changing the tabard thing design to look more like an hourglass kind of in the final update
this is where hyrule warrior's fucked up lore actually becomes relevant, because Lana's (and Cia's) role as this sorceress who watches over time is actually quite useful to me. I imagined that if someone was going around tearing up time, she'd be the first to notice, even if she can't do much about it. There's an implication that they have some sort of ability to how the future is supposed to go, hence this deviation from that foretold plan not being "on the books." There's also an implication that they're not really supposed to interfere with it either, which justifies her kind of hands-off approach of making War do the legwork here. at least in my head HAHA
I am conscious of the fact that every one of these "seeing the portal for the first time" beats kind of goes the same way, and that it might be getting repetitive and expository. but it was very important to me that War is the only one who is specifically ordered on this quest, rather than choosing to make the jump himself, or getting shoved in via some surprise circumstance like at the party. this is not an adventure for him, it's a mission.
going into his little hands behind the back soldier pose lol
now war is 1000% saying this just to be a bitch to Lana. translation: last time wasn't really on the books either and look what happened. remember :-))))) Originally I had him say a line that was much more on the nose, something to the effect of "I hope you've been keeping Cia on a tight leash." I changed it not because that Isn't something he'd say but because I think he'd be a more indirect and snide about it. I like this change also because you can literally go two pages back and see where he learned it from. Impa does it to him, and he does it to Lana
There's no real reason for her to do this, but Impa deliberately places herself behind War, as if blocking the exit. it's not about actually blocking him in any material way, it's about making it very clear that there's no turning back.
I deliberately don't really show what War's face does here when he bows. Lana is troubled overall by his lack of reaction; no further questions, just immediate obedience. One might infer from her reactions in this update that he might not have always necessarily acted this way.
on that note, a lot of people have interpreted War's behavior in this update as reluctance or a "here we go again" kind of mentality, which to be clear I think is true and something I put in there on purpose. But i'd also invite people to try reading this scene like he might actually be excited at the prospect of another war, or another mission, and is trying not to show it. A lot of these expressions where his jaw is tensed, I've just barely turned the corners of his mouth up. it could be trying to fake a smile, or trying to suppress one? My intention was not really one reading or the other but both at the same time.
And lastly some thoughts about this necklace. A lot of people have brought up the pirate's charm, which is actually where I go this idea! this is one of those fan theories that I just kind of hold in my heart and probably doesn't make sense, but I like to think things like the pirates charm, the royal ocarina, and this made-up pendant are actually made of time stones. something something blue crystal that lets u create a pocket in time. gestures vaguely. do u get me
I think that's all Ive got for now, thanks for your patience with how long this one took!
There needs to be more post 'link speedruns killing ganon as soon as he wakes up any% nmg' fics. Because on top of the inherent hilarity of any speedrun fic AND the inherent angst of the noble and measured knight link reduced to a bare chested gremlin with barely his name to his name and no knowledge of how thin the ice of amnesia lies over the arctic waters of... Everything?
It's also just an OUTRIGHT INSULT to all the champions and rhoam especially, the way link woke up weak and feeble and with absolutely no resources and then proceeded to carve a bloody unrelenting path through every single one of the monsters that killed them at the height of their power AND THEN massacred ganon without any help from the divine beasts they'd poured decades of their resources and time into recovering just for the chance to stand against ganon. And link didn't even need them. Not even a little bit. The first time he touched the ground of hyrule proper was to mount a wild horse to chase down the holy light zelda gifted him from on high to skewer the great calamity like a pin cushion.
Literally what was the point of all that work. All that effort and money and time meant to try and play support for the hero and not only does he turn out to not need it, but he also cleans up every single mess you all left and failed at. Your one job, your 100 year struggle and grief, and he mops it up himself as an aside to his REAL job of single handedly murking the legendary evil.
24 hours ago zelda was counting down the minutes until her knight woke up and they could maybe make another stab at ganon once he'd recuperated and recovered himself enough to draw the master sword again. To build up to a grand finale by accumulating favour and working his way through the divine beasts so they can finally fulfill their purpose and free the trapped spirits. And now she's blinking in the sunlight as the abruptly freed ghosts stand in shock over the castle and link is within touching distance eating a handful of apple.

Surprise, new chapter of The Ballad of Kass just dropped!
Here's a sneak peak, but first some details. Rinili is one of my (many) Rito OC's and @3leggedmagpie did some art of him here. As he and Kass are about to enter Gerudo Town, they're dressed as women, specifically a mix of standard Rito women's garb with Gerudo hoods and veils (Kass' is green while Rinili's is red.) Kass is also wearing a green scarf that's been used to tie down his crest underneath the hood. Rinili has a red sash that's tied around his fancy tail feathers to try and make them look like they're part of his outfit and not his body.
Lanara is dark skinned humanoid woman with dark braided hair with ribbons tied in, purple irises and round ears. Her outfit is sleevless armor made of fabric similar to the Ancient Armor set with a chest piece, fauld, and greaves made out of similar material as Ancient Sheikah tech. With a armband on her right arm and a bracer on her left wrist, both are made out of something similar to Ancient Sheikah tech, both having blue glowing lines with the bracer having a blue-green gem in the center. (Spoilers for TBoK up to Chapter 17.)
Barta takes point as they approach the gates of Gerudo Town. Kass and Rinili walk side by side while Lanara walks behind them. The guards appear quite shocked to see them and point their spears at them!
Barta says something in Gerudo to them and they relax, slightly, before engaging in conversation with Barta. In Gerudo of course…
Lanara whispers, “They’re not happy about you two disappearing with their books. One of them is going to join Barta in taking you to the palace.”
The guard on the right walks up to them and stands in front of Rinili and says, “Relinquish your weapons vure!”
He sighs, “There’s no need to be rude about it.”
Then he, very slowly, removes his axes and maquahuitl and hands them to the guard.
“Follow me,” Barta commands.
Rinili does as he’s told, followed by Kass, then Lanara, and the guard last. As they walk though the central plaza, Kass notices that all eyes are upon them. They get closer and he spots Frita standing by the meat stall, once again…
This time, however, she notices the expressions of everyone around her and turns towards them. Her amber eyes lock on Kass’ golden eyes for a moment. She blinks rapidly, then her beak opens wide.
She must recognize him…
The gluttonous jeweler shakes her head and smirks at him before winking and whistling something rather lewd in Rito...
Rinili chirps, “I see you have an admirer.”
“Silence vure!” The guard behind them shouts.
Rinili rolls his eyes in response and after a few moments they walk into the palace. They line up in front of Chief Riju, Rinili on the left, Lanara in the middle, and Kass on the right.
The guards shove them to their knees and Buliara bellows, “The punishment for thievery is quite severe, especially when it comes to our cherished knowledge.”
Riju sits up and queries, “Barta you will explain where you and the two Rito have been,” then she looks at Lanara, “And who our new visitor is.”
Barta kneels, “My apologies Lady Riju! I was captured by the Yiga Clan days ago!”
“What?” Bularia shouts.
“I was patrolling near Karusa Valley when I saw something strange. A pile of bananas just sitting in the desert sand. I approached and the next thing I knew, I was in a cell. I lost track of time and awoke one day with these two Rito in my cell.”
Lanara speaks up, “You have me to thank for freeing your soldier Lady Riju.”
“Oh, and who are you exactly?”
“My name is Lanara.”
Buliara comments, “I thought I recognized you. However, I’ve never seen you wear that garment before. What is it?”
Lanara smirks, “The armor my people wear.”
Riju places her hand under her chin and crosses her legs, “And who are your people?”
“The Xhona [Sho-na] Tribe, from Xilipi [Sy-lie-pie].”
Riju and Buliara gasp, while the guards look just look at each other and murmur in Gerudo.
Riju raises her hand and the guards go silent, then she says, “I was under the impression that Xilipi was a myth.”
“It’s not, it’s very real, and one hundred years ago your very large Sheikah toy attacked us. The same one that’s stomping its way towards the East Barrens.”
Everyone murmurs again for a while before Buliara silences them by loudly slamming her claymore into the stone floor.
Riju speaks up, “I see. I apologize for what happened to your people.”
“Thank you but there’s no need. We managed to turn Vah Naboris away before it could do to us what Calamity Ganon did to Hyrule.”
Riju’s eyes widen, “How did you turn it away?”
“With technology we developed from the Ancient Sheikah Tech.”
Buliara chimes in, “Can you turn it away again?”
“Not with what I have on me, besides, the Hero chosen by the sword that seals the darkness walks the land once again. He’s already tamed Vah Ruta and will have need of Vah Naboris’ might to defeat Calamity Ganon.”
Riju responds, “So what Kass said yesterday was true then? The Hero is reincarnated in each age?”

QUOTE:
Takehara: Something the terrain lead told me when the Breath of the Wild team met together:
… “The grass fluttering with the wind”, “The feeling of adventure as you push your way through the grass”, these experiences create presence. He thought that they would help establish the worldview that even after the calamity, “Beautiful nature remains regardless of human life”.
He then asked the programmers to “Grow a lot of grass in the game!”, and the end result was a volume of moving grass far past his imagination, resulting in him crying from joy.
