Me Before You Would Have Killed Me
Iâll make you all a deal. This will be one of the last posts that I make on the matter. But you all need to signal boost this. This one needs to be heard by everyone.Â
-
Iâm at a really good place in my life right now. I just turned 22. I just finished my fourth year of college with a 3.7 GPA, I moved into my first apartment, Iâm doing an awesome internship, Iâm doing a ton of advocacy work. Iâm genuinely happy.
Iâm at a really great place.
I wasnât always.
Iâve been disabled all my life but about ten years ago, I walked into an operating room and came out in a wheelchair. (Well, technically I came out on a stretcher, but you get the point.)
And it took me a while to realize that my life was completely different. In fact, it wasnât until about three years later, when I was about fifteen, that I really realized it. I donât know if I was in shock all that time, if I was numb, if the medications that I was on limited any conscious thought, let alone emotion. But it was around the age of fifteen that everything came crashing down and I fell apart. I became extremely depressed. And let me tell you, no matter how hard you try, you never forget that feeling. Itâs one of the worst feelings in the world. Depression is like being in a room where everything is pitch black. And people are screaming at you to turn on the light switch, but you canât find it, you canât see it, even though everyone else seems to know exactly where it is, youâre completely lost in this dark room with no way out. Depression is horrible. I would never wish it on my worst enemy. Even now, there are days when I struggle, though those days are nowhere as bad as the weeks, months, that I battled depression as a teenager. As a fifteen-year-old, too weak to put up a fight.
Now, I should mention that I never tried anything.
But believe me when I say that I know what itâs like to want to.
And believe me when I say that if you built a time machine, if you took Jojo Moyesâ infamous book, if you sent it back to 2009, and if fifteen-year-old me had read itâŚ
I probably wouldnât be here right now.
Iâd be dead.
I would have lost my battle.
Because I would have picked up a book wherein the main character kills themselves because they think that their life isnât worth living now that theyâre disabled.
And I would have related all too well, and I would have done something thatâs genuinely terrifying to think about. I know I would have. I was not in a good place at that time, I was not strong, and while I did survive, it wouldnât have taken much for the scales to tip in the other direction.
And I keep going into the Me Before You tags on different websites and I keep seeing teenagers who are in the same place that I once was, who are saying that they were sobbing in the movie theaters because they didnât expect the ending and they genuinely donât know what to do.
I would have been one of those teenagers.
I dodged a bullet.
Literally.
And I know that the author probably didnât mean for any of this to happen, she didnât expect the huge backlash from the disabled community, she didnât expect a very tired college student to be revealing something very personal at 1:06 AM.
She just wanted to tell a story.
I can respect that.
I read an interview a few days ago where she talked about how she had seen a few debates over assisted suicide and she felt compelled to write a story, to give a perspective, to give a voice.
And whether she meant to or not, that voice is a single mantra:
âItâs okay to die.â
And I keep seeing people defend the book, defend the author, defend that voice, by saying that itâs just one perspective, itâs just one voice.
But itâs not.
Itâs not okay.
And itâs not just one voice.
You see, we didnât need Jojo Moyes to be that voice. She thinks we did. But we didnât.
We hear that voice every single day.
We hear that voice every single day.
Every single day.
We hear people talking about how itâs okay for the disabled to die.
Every. Single. Day.
(Note: I was actually going to make this a video but at this point, I started crying and couldnât finish, so Iâm typing it all out instead.)
And we hear our own inner voice, whispering to us at night, urging us that itâs okay to die.
We hear the voices. We hear them. We hear them every single day. The voices that say that itâs okay to die.
We hear them.
I heard them when I was fifteen. I heard them loud and clear. And I believed them. And had I read Me Before You, it would have been the voice to break the camelâs back. It would have been the voice that I listened to.
This book would have killed me.
This book is going to end up killing someone else.
And I donât think Jojo Moyes understands, I donât think that the abled community understands, I think they have the privilege of not understanding just how loud that voice can be and how damaging that voice can be. They donât hear those voices every day.
But we do.
Whether we want to or not.
And you know what?
For the amount of people who say, âItâs okay to die.â there are very few people out there who say, âItâs okay to live.â
Theyâre the voices that we need to hear. Theyâre the voices that are so few and far between.
And Iâm here tonight to try to be one of those voices.
For those of you who are constantly hearing the various voices that are telling you that itâs okay to die, please, please know that those voices are lying to you. I know that itâs hard. I know what itâs like to be in that dark room. I also know what itâs like to open the door and to escape.
And I know there are others that have escaped as well. And now, we have to help the others who havenât. We have to help the others who keep hearing these voices. We have to put an end to them.
Boycott the voice.
Boycott the author.
Boycott the book.
Boycott the movie.
Boycott Me Before You.
Signal Boost!
Because this is so true. I agree that the author probably did not intend for this to be harmful to anyone, but if you see that it is, you need to put forth the other voice. You need to be proactive and tell the story of the ones who attacked the darkness in a courageous fight and came out, maybe a little battle weary, but winners all the same. We can each be the hero of our own story but even heroes need inspiration sometimes. Be that inspiration for someone today, and tomorrow, and the next day. And donât forget to let someone inspire you as you move through this life. We all need each other.

Throwinâ the Bones
Of the divinatory techniques with which I am familiar, bones are my personal favorite. Yes, they have that very witchy vibe â but itâs more than that; the bones are honest. They donât sugar coat, and while they have to be interpreted, once you know how to read them â thereâs little room for interpretation. They are very direct and are much better suited to answering yes or no questions than tarot. With a little imaginative methodology, there few questions the bones canât answer. And even fewer they wonât answer (as tarot cards can be known to do). A few examples of things I think the bones are better at answering than tarot: questions involving time, questions regarding health, sickness and maledictions; they present a broader grasp to any given situation â incorporating things outside of the question presented and how these things relate to the question or the reading, showing the interconnectedness of life â and how these things all relate back.
Our countless cultures have countless methods for collecting and reading the Bones â and I can only rightly attest to my own methodology: one in which the Bones need not necessarily consist solely of bones, but a collection of gathered trinkets and curios, all with their own meaning, their own story and their own energy. My collection consists of: bones (bare and painted), coins, stones, shells, jewelry, twigs, buttons, animal teeth and other squabbles. The only rule I implement is that the item can be easily gathered and (safely) tossed without breakage or injury (save your razor-blades and glass shards for witchesâ bottles!).
Collecting the Bones and Bobbles
Most any small bones will do, though its recommended that you use bones that havenât been cooked, as cooked bones have a tendency to get very brittle â especially in the case of chicken, which is quite common. In my collection I have a number of different animal bones: most are chicken, but I also have some raccoon and possum bones, as well as teeth and claws. I built a âbaseâ of bones, but am continuously adding or replacing as I see fit.
A short list of âBonesâ I like to include â most of which serve as my âbaseâ bones:
Self Bone â used for the reader
Other Bone â used to represent another person or the person you are reading
Magic Bone â represents the need for or use of magic
âEvilâ Bone â malicious or hateful acts, disadvantageous behavior
Love Bone â represents romantic love
Male Bone â represents male fertility, masculinity, sexuality or a man
Female Bone â represents female fertility, femininity, sexuality or a woman
Health Bone â represents physical or mental health
Wealth Bone â represents financial standing or monetary issues
Family Bone â represents familial connections or a family member
Fate Bone â represents destiny and your lifepath (I use a shell for this: open side up means an event can be altered, destiny is not set in stone; open side down, this path must be walked â prepare in lieu of fighting)
âKeyâ Bone â (I actually use a small key) which represents the key to any given situation, the remedy or problem at hand and its cause
This list is by no means comprehensive and I have many more bones in my collection with more menial meanings. This is simply a small list of options to be added to and adapted by whosoever casts the bones.
Reading the Bones
There is no right or wrong way to read the bones, there is simply your way and their way. Below I will dictate how it is that I do a general reading â again, this is just an example of one way, take and adapt to fit your own unique style or tradition!
Begin by collecting your bones into your hand. I keep mine in a leather pouch, but donât like to toss them directly from the bag as it doesnât allow for much control â i.e. the bones fall out either in a massive, unreadable pile or they fly out in such a scattered way nothing is close enough to read. Throwing them from the hand allows for a rather contained casting, and one that can be read easily. I do not include the Self or Other bone, instead, the Self Bone is placed before the caster and the Other Bones is placed either in front of the person youâre reading for or simply in the middle of the casting area. When reading for yourself, place the Self Bone in the center and discard the Other Bone.
Throw the Bones. This can be done on a square of cloth on which a circle (or any number of complex shapes) has been drawn or simply upon a flat table. If throwing in a circle, discard all bones that fall outside of it. These bones are null for the reading, though they can also be read as âfar from the personâs mind/current situation.â
Interpret the Bones. This is done by noting the location and connection of the bones present. For instance, note the Love Bones proximity to the Other Bones and the Male Bone. This could be interpreted as being the male love of the querent â but if the âEvilâ bones is introduced, this could symbol ulterior motives or a hostile or explosive relationship. Read based on both their proximity to the Other Bone â the closer, the higher priority the matter is â and their relation to one another. Itâs very much like investigating a big puzzle, putting it together piece by piece to form a comprehensive understanding of their life or situation. Also not their relation based on the third dimension: x bone seems to be overlapping y bone â is the x issue eclipsing an underlying problem or truth represented by y? It depends. Only through practice will you find clarity.
Convey the message. I always like to spend a few moments making a variety of âhmmâ noises when reading for others â it builds up their anticipation. Or you can throw in the occasional gasp or snarky smirk. Their responses are usually hilarious â even more so when yours are genuine! If you are reading on your own, it may be a good idea to sketch out a general map of the readings as opposed to taking a picture as often bones overlie others, which makes for a rather misleading photo representation. You might also find jotting down notes rewarding, especially in synthesizing a cohesive read.
Once youâve garnered all the information you can from that particular toss, feel free to specify: take the bone/situation you wish to examine and toss the rest again over it/them, reading the others through that particular lens. I.E. Who is this person mentioned? What are their qualities? What is the nature of this love? What magic is being referenced here? Follow that rabbit hole as far as you wish, building your understanding.
Do not be afraid to adjust your style! Want to narrow down a time frame? Make a sort of timeline with the bones. Wish to determine the source of an ailment? Shape the bones into the form of a body. I find the bones allow for far more creativity and ingenuity than cards. And above all â TRUST YOUR GUT.
Photos: These are photos of my âbaseâ bones when I first started reading; since then they have probably doubled (if not tripled) in number and do not incorporate my other animal bones, claws or teeth.Â

things are awful and will remain awful for a very long time so here is a picture of two chickens with little handmade knitted capes on. Someone must love these chickens a lot to make them little chicken capes. They look so warm and lovely in their little chicken capes.
I need this on my dashboard. Knitted capes for chickens. How did I not come up with this in my knitted daydreams??  (Sigh!)
I think Iâm in love! Good with Sushi I bet.   :o)

So, tomorrow (May 11) is my birthday. As of tomorrow, I will no longer be a teenager, which is terrifying. And, in light of all the awesome things my friends my age are getting up to (lookin at you @politicalwhovianblog :P), combined with my general lack of self worth, Iâve been feeling pretty mopey about myself lately. So I came up with a list of 19 things I did while 19, to try to remind myself that I do okay in life, too. Here goes.
Went to England and Europe.
Moved out.
Started uni.
Joined the Pack! And made some awesome friends. @gaslightgallows, @ladygrayluvs, @apostrophelover, @balticprincess, @heavyheadedgal, @cowalyn, @phrynesboudoir, @slimwhistler, holy crap who else⌠All of you!!!
Met some of the Pack! @phrynesboudoir, @tisziny, @suzilynn, @apostrophelover, @rinnykins9 <3
MET NATHAN PAGE!!! :D
Made it over 8 months clean from self harm, a new record for me.
Went mostly sober, I havenât been drunk since Feb 19th.
Got my nose ring back.
Had an adult conversation with my parents which resulted in some respect.
Got my green Pâs (non-Australians read: passed my second-to-last license test).
Went to not only my uni formal night, but also my friendsâ high school formal.
Saw The Phantom of the Opera (aka My Favourite Musical Since I Was 12) in London in Her Majestyâs Theatre.
Went away with friends for two weeks of drunken adventures in summer.
Started to learn to be okay with my body.
Applied to change my degree to something I would be better at.
Decided to quit smoking (have been a chainsmoker since I was 16).
Learned to stand up for myself a bit better.
I SURVIVED.
That last one is most important to me. I wasnât expected to make it to 18, by a lot of people. But, thanks to a lot of you guys as well, here I am, proving everyone wrong. As @apostrophelover would put it, Iâm a victory. Which is appropriate, seeing as my middle name is Victoria. :)
Hereâs to another year of surviving.Â
Here it is still the tenth but not where you live! All the best for you! Lots of hugs. Love our chats!!đşđşđş
I hope you have the greatest birthday yet @whiskeyandjack! And, remember, because of who you are, there will be even better birthdays to come! Congratulations, on all of your accomplishments girl! But you forgot one. You are a remarkable friend to those you care about. And all of us who have been a part of your brave, and often funny posts here, feel privileged to have been included in your epic journey. So, thanks for the ride and I hope youâll continue to let us tag along. Lots of love and happy wishes are winging their way to you.   :o)
