hey guys so I’m dumb as shit and accidentally deleted part one of Snake Eyes while trying to edit it so :-) haha

Rivers and Roads - Poe Dameron x reader

this takes place when you and Poe are teens (18/19)

summary: just a fluffy/sweet and kinda sad fic about growing up as children of the resistance. Poe and the reader try to find times to just be dumb teens and not have to worry about the future, but its something that can’t be avoided.

warnings: fluff!!! A kinda steamy scene. Also drinking

This fic idea stemmed from me being horrified about graduating in a few months

song inspo: Rivers and Roads by The Head and the Heart (a great song. highly recommend)

Yavin 4 was beautiful - it has always been, but tonight especially. The thick green woods stretched for miles in all directions and the lights from the resistance base below were a faint volcanic glow. The most beautiful part was above you. It may have been the alcohol in your system, but the stars seemed to swirl and dance in a private performance for you alone. It was almost... peaceful.

There hadn’t been a time of peace for as long as you could remember. 

Yes, the Empire had been defeated and the “war” had been won, at least that’s what the history books will remember. What they won't remember is the utter chaos and massacres and confusion that followed. The dictator was gone, which was what your parents had worked so hard for, but without a proper leader, dictator or not, any society would crumble. The resistance tried their best to keep the peace, but it was a daily battle and things didn’t seem to be improving. 

You felt a sort animosity towards life, towards the fact that you were forced to live in a time like this. A time where kids were forced to grow up quickly and were robbed of proper childhoods. You knew it was selfish to think like that - you were only one of the millions having to grow up like this - but you couldn’t help it. 

“What are you thinking about?”

Poe’s voice pulled you from your thoughts and you turned to look at him. He stared back at you with a lazy smile and curious eyes. Your heart grew heavy. Poe was the love of your life. He was your partner in crime. You wanted to spend every day of the rest of your life with him, but you knew that was wishful thinking. 

“Just... stuff. The war. This place. You,” you shrugged.

“You were thinking about me?”

“I’m always thinking about you.”

“I’m glad it’s mutual,” Poe teased you slightly. You smiled and took the large bottle from him, taking a long sip and letting the liquid fire crawl its way down your throat and pool in your gut with that tingling sensation you have gotten to know so well. 

Poe watched you, the adoration obvious in his gaze. You knew he loved you, you could tell. He knew the same about you. 

You rested your head on his shoulder, your head spinning, “I’ve been on this godforsaken place for too long. 18 years is too fucking long.”

Poe intertwined his fingers with yours, playing with your hands, “where would you go?”

“Probably Kijimi. I have family there. I could get a job as a spice runner with my uncle.”

Poe laughed, “there is no way I’m letting you become a spice runner.”

“Why not? It’s good money,” you shrugged, not opposed to the idea. It wasn’t the most honorable of jobs, but it was a place to start. Anything to get off of Yavin 4. 

Poe didn’t answer and the two of you sat in comfortable silence, watching the stars. You felt like two cathedral bells swaying together at the top of the tower. It was a few minutes before you finally spoke again. 

“I would ask you to come with me... but you have so much promise here, Poe. You’re barely an adult and you’re already one of the best pilots I know.”

“I can fight for the resistance anywhere. But it's not like I can be with you just anywhere,” Poe answered simply. 

Poe was right, you felt the same way. In a galaxy where things were constantly changing, Poe was always by your side. You had grown up with him, learned to fly with him, made dumb mistakes and got in trouble with him. You were a team. 

Poe began to stand up and you made a noise of complaint. 

“Come on, we’re going on a trip,” Poe grabbed your hand and pulled you up with him. 

The world around you swayed and you let out a laugh, “where? I like it right here.”

“The lake.”

“We’re not allowed outside the base after dark.”

“We’re also not allowed in the watchtower, yet here we are. You’ve never cared about rules,” Poe smiled. 

“One of us has to be a voice of reason,” you moved to wrap your arms around his neck. 

Poe pulled you close, “since when?”

You laughed and kissed him quickly before making your way towards the stairs. Poe hurried after you, both of you stumbling and giggling the whole way down. At the bottom of the stairs, you turned the corner before instantly retreated and pressing Poe against the wall. 

“What?” Poe frowned.

You raised a finger to his lips, “night patrol.”

Poe nodded and stayed silent, but once the patrol officers had passed, he stuck his tongue out and you snatched your hand away, making a face of disgust, “you licked me!”

Poe laughed, his breath hot on your skin, “oops.”

You tried to act mad but the feeling of being so close to him, mixed with the adrenaline of the situation and the buzz running through your body, made it difficult. Instead, you not so gently pressed Poe further against the wall and smashed your lips against his.  

Poe’s reaction was almost immediate. He kissed you back roughly, squeezing your thighs and signaling you to wrap your legs around him. You jumped up and he turned, your back now against the wall. Poe’s lips moved to your jaw and down your neck, sending a shiver up your spine. You whispered his name but your voice came out much louder than you expected. 

“Hey! Is someone back there?” a voice called. You saw flashlights heading your way. 

Poe quickly set you down and it took you a moment to snap back to reality. 

“Come on,” Poe grinned and grabbed your hand, running away from the patrollers and towards the path that leads to the lake. 

You hurried after Poe, your grin matching his own. It felt good, to just be teenagers doing dumb shit. The two of you slipped past another patrol officer and finally made it to the edge of the woods. You stopped and caught your breath before bursting into a fit of laughter. 

“What are you laughing at?” Poe asked as he laughed just as hard. 

“That was fun!”

“Well let's have some more. Race you!” 

Poe took off running and you gasped before bolting after him. As you ran down the path, the two of you started shedding your shoes and jackets and shirts until you were just in your underwear. As you reached the dock, you surpassed Poe and took the leap, plunging into the dark water. 

All thoughts went away and, for a moment, you were nothing. A particle of stardust floating in the neverending void of space. The water engulfed you like an old friend and you savored the moment, staying under for as long as you could before running out of air. 

When you resurfaced, Poe was floating beside you. His hair was wet and water droplets fell on his face. His eyes were bright, reflecting the light of the stars and other moons. The image was ethereal, and it almost made you cry. 

“What?” Poe poked your shoulder, a playful smirk on his face. 

“I don’t want to grow up,” you breathed, suddenly overwhelmed by the idea of being anywhere but right here. 

“I think we already have, love.”

You shook your head, “no. not completely. I still feel like a child. When will we stop feeling like children? I asked my mom and she said she still does sometimes. Even now. It’s a cruel paradox.”

Poe looked at you, sadness in his eyes. He moved his hand to your cheek, rubbing his thumb gently across your skin.

“War is cruel. There’s not much we can do about that. We... we’ve lived more lifetimes than most.”

You let out a breath, leaning into his touch. The cold water swirled around you, whispering at you to take the leap. 

“Come to Kijimi with me.”

Poe let out a small laugh. 

“No jokes, Poe. I’m serious. I told you about my uncle, and my cousin Zorii says there’s so much opportunity there. We could leave.”

Poe was quiet for a moment, looking at you carefully, “are you sure?”

“With my whole heart.”

“Then yes.”

“Yes?” you weren’t sure why his answer surprised you. Of course he said yes.

“Yes. Where you go, I follow. Down any river and any road. We’re a team,” Poe gently pulled you close, giving you a kiss on the forehead. 

“I love you.”

“I know.”

You rolled your eyes playfully and splashed him with water. 

“Hey!” Poe complained. You started to swim away but he grabbed your leg and dragged you back, both of you laughing until your ribs hurt. 

Poe held you close to him, spinning slowly in the water, “I hope they have lakes on Kijimi.” 

You tried to wiggle away from him, still laughing, “I’m starting to hope they don’t.”

You eventually gave up on your attempt to escape. You leaned against Poe, feeling dizzy with joy as you stared up at the sky. Up at the stars that danced for you, singing a song of endless possibility.

I may make a part two depending on reactions! Maybe of them going to Kijimi and Poe meeting Zorii? Much to think about...
