The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is requiring commercial drivers to carry their medical examiner’s certificate for another year, through Jan. 30, 2015. The reason is several states notified the agency that they are not ready to integrate the certificates into the Commercial Driver’s License System. As a result, drivers, for the second time, are required to carry their paper medical cards through January 2015. The integration was intended to take place by Jan. 30, 2012.

A move by the federal government to change the rules on how commercial trucking fleets and other businesses report their workplace injury and illness reports – so they can be made public faster – is being hailed by some industry officials and despised by others.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), part of the Department of Labor, wants to require fleets and other businesses to report their workplace injury and illness data electronically instead of via the traditional paper-based Form 300A.
