"Heretics. Let Nere be your end."
True Soul Nere appreciation post. NSFW.
Iām so in love with this stuck up prick that I gave him an elaborate backstory. My HC made him a noble of an underworld riverlands, connecting to the Glimmersea. He fled his responsibilities when he was promised to a future miss Matron, so that he would not lose his political power. He later got caught in the sticky web of lies surrounding the Absolute. From the frying pan into the fires at Grymforge š„

3rd Place Play-off ā Match 1 / 1 ā Ketheric Thorm vs. Minthara Baenre
General Ketheric Thorm is an Undead with elven ancestry and appearance, the Chosen of Myrkulā Myrkul, and one of the leaders of the enigmatic Cult of the Absolute. He serves as one of the main antagonists in Baldur's Gate 3.
"j.k. simmons voice. come on. that alone buys him points."
"he makes act 2 feel coherent. every weird thorm relative, every bit of moonrise, every piece of the shadow curse stuff points back to him somehow. also the whole āwould raze the world for his daughterā thing is just such a strong horrible character core. awful man. excellent villian."
vs.
Nightwarden Minthara Baenre is a recruitable Companion who can be romanced by characters of any gender. She is a Lolth-Sworn Drow and an Oath of Vengeance Paladin with the Noble background. Ruthless in service of the Absolute, she commands a camp of goblins planning an attack on the Emerald Grove in the name of their god. Initially hostile, she can be re-encountered during Act Two and saved from execution.
"thereās no clowning around with her. sheās intense, sheās ruthless, sheās fully committed to the Absolute at that point, and she makes the whole attack-on-the-grove path feel way more real because she actually seems capable of pulling it off"
"she makes act 1 feel way more serious. also shes got that really good āsays horrible things in a calm voiceā thing going on which always works on me as villian material. just very very effective bad vibes tbh."

Round 3 ā Match 6 / 6 ā Ketheric Thorm vs. Enver Gortash
"he makes act 2 feel coherent. every weird thorm relative, every bit of moonrise, every piece of the shadow curse stuff points back to him somehow. also the whole āwould raze the world for his daughterā thing is just such a strong horrible character core. awful man. excellent villian."
vs.
Lord Enver Gortash, often just referred to as Gortash, is the Chosen of Baneā , and one of the leaders of the enigmatic Cult of the Absolute. He serves as one of the main antagonists in Baldur's Gate 3. Despite his humble beginnings, Gortash quickly rose through the ranks of society in Baldur's Gate with unbridled ambition and great cunning. Now, an influential figure and poised to become the Archduke of the city, he seeks to consolidate his power and become the ruler of the city and beyond, through whatever means are necessary.
"enver gortash i am looking at you through the bars of my enclosure like im sorry he is SUCH a good villain. because yes heās a tyrant, yes heās deeply evil, yes heās building a police state with killer robots and propaganda and fear, and yet every time he opens his mouth iām still like okayyy unfortunately i see the vision. and i think thatās what makes him so fun. heās not just strong, heās persuasive. he knows how to make control sound practical, how to make collaboration sound reasonable, how to talk like the only adult in the room while heās actively making everything worse. disgusting. perfect. i support his inclusion in every tournament forever."
"Gortash is one of my favourite BG3 antagonists because he feels so horribly contemporary. A lot of the gameās villains are monstrous, mythic, or overtly supernatural in how they present themselves. Gortash is different. He is still larger than life, obviously, but his whole thing is systems: surveillance, militarised āsafety,ā political image management, strategic partnerships, making brutality look like stability. That makes him feel especially nasty to me. He is not promising transcendence or divine truth. He is promising order, convenience, security, all while turning Baldurās Gate into something colder and more controlled. And then on top of that, the game gives him this very intimate way of talking to the player, especially Durge, that makes him even better. He is awful, but he's awful in a way that knows exactly how to sell itself."
"what if the villain was just some deeply rancid evil suit with wet eyes and a god complex. what if he looked at fascism and went yes but can i make it stylish. what if he kept standing there talking to you like this was a networking opportunity while the city rotted around him. he is SO foul. and i love that heās not pretending to be noble about any of it either, not really. he wants power. he wants recognition. he wants to be the one steering the apocalypse and having everybody admit he was the clever one. also iām sorry his whole vibe with durge is soooo diseased in exactly the way i enjoy. just a really, really juicy villain."
"you can feel his fingerprints all over baldurs gate. plus heās one of the only villains where i can fully believe heād rather negotiate first, not because heās nice, but because he genuinely thinks thatās the smartest move. which, annoyingly, it often is. hate him. love him. fantastic antagonist."

Round 2 ā Match 9 / 11 ā Viconia DeVir vs. Ansur
Viconia DeVir is a drow cleric of Shar. She is the Mother Superior of the Sharā enclave in Baldur's Gate. She is a returning character from Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, where she was a companion.
"shes basically the final horrible proof of where shar's whole belief system leads if u let it eat ur life. also i just think house of grief would be waaay less memorable without her. she makes the whole place feel nastier, pettier, and more personal in the best way."
vs.
Ansur is an undead dragon found in Baldur's Gate 3. Formerly a bronze dragon nicknamed "The Waiting Storm" and the "Heart of the Gate", Ansur was generally thought to be mere legend. Depending on the party's actions, either Ulder Ravengard, Counsellor Florrick, or Cordula EltanāÆreveals that Ansur is very real, offering the party a book which starts their journey to seek Ansur and its help against the Absolute.
"you go down there expecting some huge legendary dragon moment and, yes, you get that, but you also get all this history and bitterness and grief wrapped around it in a way that makes the whole thing hit harder. and i LOVE that ansur doesnt feel like just some optional cool boss. he feels personal. ancient. offended on a soul level. the whole wyrmway buildup, the storm stuff, the corpse, the reveal of who he was to balduran⦠its all so dramatic in exactly the way i enjoy. also im sorry but a giant undead lightning dragon??"

Round 2 ā Match 10 / 11 ā Grym vs. Ketheric Thorm
Grym is a powerful Adamantine Golem that eternally protects the Adamantine Forge. It cannot be damaged without becoming Superheated first.
"sometimes the best villain in the room is just a giant ancient metal murder machine that does not care abt ur feelings or ur build or literally anything except flattening you into paste"
vs.

Round 2 ā Match 4 / 11 ā Auntie Ethel vs. Nere
Auntie Ethel is a fussy trader of potions, lotions, quirks, and sundries who can be first encountered in The Hollow of the Emerald Grove. Later, she will return to her home at the Riverside Teahouse in the Sunlit Wetlands.
"sheās just so much fun to interact with while also being completely vile. like the writing for her is great. sheās charming in this horrible fake-cozy way, sheās constantly needling people, and she has some of the best āohhh you are evil evilā escalation in the game once you get past the teahouse stuff and see what sheās actually been doing. i also love that she doesnāt feel one-and-done. if mayrina survives, the game actually lets the consequences of ethel keep going into act 3 with the hag survivors and vanra, which makes her feel more important than just āact 1 spooky swamp boss.ā she leaves a mess behind her, which is exactly what a hag should do."
vs.
Nere, also known as True Soul Nere, is a True Soul of the Absolute, and potential boss in Baldur's Gate 3. He is a pivotal character for the quests Free True Soul Nereā , Save the Grymforge Gnomesā and Deliver Nere's Headā .
"nere is one of my fave smaller bg3 antagonists because he has such strong āohhhh iām going to enjoy killing youā energy the second he starts talking. like heās not subtle at all, but i donāt need him to be. i need him to be a smug cruel asshole in a fur cloak who gets rescued from a cave-in and somehow still acts like heās the most important person there. and he delivers! also i think he sticks in peopleās heads because the whole grymforge situation around him is already memorable, so he gets tied to one of those act 1 bits everyone has Opinions about. very hateable. very murderable. good villain."

look all I'm saying is if shadowheart fans are genuinely interested in diving into her character, there would be at least one meta comparing and contrasting her with ketheric. on the barest surface level they are the past and present chosen of shar, ketheric being number one on shar's hitlist if shadowheart embrace becoming a dark justiciar. if you choose for her to reject shar, the parallels to ketheric "betrayer of gods" thorm are glaring. but even with the bg3 fandom's myopic preoccupation with romanceable companions (to the exclusion of all else including the overarching story) they are not interested in her character like that lol
Round 1 ā Match 18 / 23 ā Viconia DeVir vs. Arcagh
Viconia DeVir is a drow cleric of Shar. She is the Mother Superior of the Sharā enclave in Baldur's Gate. She is a returning character from Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, where she was a companion.
"shes basically the final horrible proof of where shar's whole belief system leads if u let it eat ur life. also i just think house of grief would be waaay less memorable without her. she makes the whole place feel nastier, pettier, and more personal in the best way."
vs.
Arcagh is a petrified drow fighter in the Underdark during Act One.
"the petrified drow fight is already memorable on its own, but i think characters like arcagh help it stick bc it feels like a real failed expedition instead of just random combat. dude got hired by dhourn, went chasing forge loot, got mixed up in the spectator mess, and now if he wakes up hes ready to make that everybody elses issue too. not a huge villian, but a very solid āwow this place sucksā antagonist."

Round 1 ā Match 11 / 23 ā Mizora vs. Kar'niss
Mizora is a cambion in service of the Archdevil Zariel, as well as the infernal patron of Wyll. She plays an important role in Wyll's backstory, as well as his character arc throughout the game. Manipulative, mischievous and always looking to get the best out of her deals, she may be an asset or an adversary for the party, but always looks out for her own and Zariel's best interests.
"everything about her is so designed to get under your skin. the flirting, the smugness, the way she acts like tormenting wyll is just a mildly amusing hobby she squeezes in between wardrobe changes. and i LOVE that the game never lets her become harmless just because sheās entertaining. she is entertaining, yes. she is also a complete nightmare. the whole point is that sheās funny and hot and charismatic in a way that makes her worse, not better. and honestly? incredible villain design. if i see a woman lounging dramatically while acting like soul contracts are just normal workplace paperwork, i am immediately paying attention."
"mizora is just a really strong villain presence tbh. every time she shows up she makes things worse instantly, and i mean that as a compliment. sheās got that very specific āiām smiling at you while making your life materially worseā devil energy that works super well, especially with wyll. and i do think a lot of why people remember her so strongly is that she feels active. sheās not off in the background being evil somewhere else, she keeps turning up to meddle directly and act like sheās doing everyone a favour. also sheās just fun to hate. that matters too."
"She feels ongoing. Constant. She keeps inserting herself back into Wyll's decisions, his relationships, even his sense of what kind of person he gets to be, and she does it all with this infuriating confidence that makes her even more effective. Also, I think the game is smart not to sand down how entertaining she is. The charm is part of the menace. If she were just bluntly cruel all the time, sheād be less memorable. Instead sheās funny, polished, theatrical, and completely willing to use that to make the leash feel looser than it really is."
vs.
Kar'niss is a drider in service of the Absolute, whom he serves after being cast out by Lolth, the Queen of Spiders.
"visually??? come on. unbelievable design. nightmare horse-spider-man of my dreams."
"every scene with him makes me feel a little bit itchy. heās creepy, heās fanatical, he looks absolutly insane, and thereās also somthing kind of miserable about him that makes him stick more than just ābig scary monster dude.ā i think thats why people remember him so much. if he was only intimidating heād still be cool, but the fact he also feels unstable and weirdly tragic makes him waaay more compelling. also iām sorry but the moonlantern convoy bit is just iconic. karāniss, you creepy freak, i support ur inclusion in this bracket."

Round 1 ā Match 9 / 23 ā Krolla vs. Nere
Krolla is a goblin who can be found stationed in the Goblin Camp in Act One. She is just left of the stage Volo is performing on, trying to organize a game of chicken chasing. If certain events have played out across the Wilderness, her "chicken" will instead be the Owlbear Cub.
