At Trunk we are all about worldly treasures. Our Fossilised finds and agate coasters have been a real favourite of ours and we are very pleased that our customers think the same. With Christmas gifts forming part of peoples discussions, these make fabulous and extraordinary gifts.  A gift that has a story to tell.

We are inspired by so many things. At TRUNK our love for India never wanes.  Born and brought up in London, my Indian roots have always captivated me; they colour my daily life and in spite of our busy western lives, denying the riches they bring to me and my family would be a sacrilege. We love to travel to the east but as we get busier with TRUNK we don’t always find enough time to revisit our heritage. As a substitute we are often found gazing into the works of Philadelphia born photographer Steven McCurry, his ability to capture the true essence of a country through his camera is mesmerising.

Some of my Favourite Things

People often ask me what my favourite product would be if I had to choose.  It’s a tricky question because, to be honest, I am pretty fond of everything we have worked so hard to include in the TRUNK range!  But there are probably two products which best encapsulate our ethics and values – the amazing reclaimed teak carved panels and tables because they truly bring a taste of the East into our homes and have taken literally hours to create by hand, and the Chinese Old Paper Baskets from the Shanxi region; created from vintage Chinese newspapers and hand painted with Chinese motifs and emblems. Both of these show the incredible skill of their talented makers and are sustainable, worldly treasures to cherish.

Hand in hand

As a product designer I have noticed how little importance and significance is given to the people who actually make the products we buy. As consumers, we have become embedded in a culture of ‘throw away’, and this does not value the individuals whose skills and expertise have made the products in the first place. Or indeed your relationship with the things you buy.

 At TRUNK a key part of our ethos is to retain the handprint of the maker and work with them. Our craftspeople make our products using their hard earned skills passed down from generation to generation and we want to keep it that way. They pack the goods themselves when they are finished, so the next person to touch them is probably me or a member of my team at this end, and then of course … you.

Retaining the integrity of the product and its origin matters to us, and it’s what we do; our TRUNK products are created to last; to be passed down to the next generation and beyond. It’s amazing to think that your Trunk table or chair or bowl or carved panel has been touched by fewer people than the number of fingers on your hand.

Design Inspiration

Embarking on a totally new brand and collection of ‘one off’ unique products is daunting at the best of times but the one thing we don’t lack is ideas!  We aren’t precious designers either … we create designs with our artisans, in our office in London, anywhere we feel inspired and with whoever inspires us.

I have a black sketch book where I note ideas and details that I want to explore further and losing this or leaving it on the tube would not be great! Creating the product can take from five minutes to several weeks but we always know when it's right.

Sometimes we instigate something and then leave the interpretation to the craftsmen. This is what happened with our Vastu Nest of Tables, we gave them the table sizes and position of the carving and left the rest to our magician carver – I’m sure you will agree the results are wonderful.
