"Till death do us part-"
Ship: Verkwan (Vernon x Seungkwan) Group: SEVENTEEN Genre: Urban fantasy, fluff and a bit of angst Warnings: anxiety, bad humour, unhealthy amount of iced coffees and fear of death (literally) Badly explained: Imagine falling in love with death's son. Seungkwan can relate. Wordcount: ~1500 words - - -
This is fine. Totally fine. Seungkwan thought to himself while slowly sipping his third iced americano on this morning. He didnât know whether he was trembling because of the caffeine or because of this date. Probably both.
If we think logically about it, nothing can go wrong, right? Itâs not like weâre getting married instantly once I meet his parents and we have a contract that states that my soul will be his once I die, right?
Seungkwan sighed and looked around in hopes of getting distracted successfully. His thoughts were getting weird. Again. Something that happened way too often when he thought about his current relationship.
The cafĂŠ he was currently sitting in was rather quiet and empty, more like an aesthetic Instagram story area than a place you really wanted to spend more than ten minutes in, yet Seungkwan was too obsessed with the iced americano here. He knew his drinking habits werenât something youâd normally call healthy but at the same time he was an adult with adult money and no one could stop him. At least Iâm not doing drugs, he liked to justify his love for iced coffee. Additionally, if his addiction, or as he liked to call it âhealthy obsessionâ, helped out the local cafĂŠ in this city then so be it. Unlike most of his friends, he actually enjoyed being alone from time to time since his social battery seemed kind of broken lately. Well, that was the case until he met-
âV-vernon! Hi! Take a seat!â, Seungkwan exclaimed way too excited for his own taste and gulped before shakily pointing towards the empty seat in front of him. Vernon let out a quiet laugh before sitting down and taking off his leather jacket in a way too casual manner. Seungkwan was almost sad since he loved seeing Vernon with that blue-ish leather jacket.
âKwannie, please. Weâve been on multiple dates and youâre still so nervous?â âItâs the coffee, I swear.â âThat makes it worse.â âI know.â
Vernon shook his head smiling while Seungkwan thought about digging a hole and vanishing with an unlimited amount of iced coffee. The young man still didnât understand how someone so calm and handsome like Vernon could like someone like him. A nervous system without a real system. Thatâs what Seungkwan liked to call himself sometimes. Yet Vernon seemed to be really fond of that.
âYou really donât have to be that nervous. Itâs not like youâre gonna die, you know?â, Vernon tried to calm him down. The young couple had gone through this talk multiple times but this didnât stop Seungkwan to still be worried. Realistically speaking, who wouldnât be nervous to meet their partnerâs parents? Especially if the father was death himself?
âBut what if-â âWhat? He already knows who you are and that youâre the reason why Iâm enjoying my existence here on earth, you know? Isnât that already enough? And if not, then heâs gonna have a problem with me.â âVernonâŚâ âWhat? You think Iâm not serious?â
Seungkwan gulped before looking away in shame and nibbling on his lowkey soggy paperstraw. âItâs not thatâŚâ, he tried to argue but didnât know how to explain his fear. Wasnât it normal to be scared of death? Especially if you were accidentally dating his son?
âYou know, I⌠I really love you. Like- I know itâs more than a simple crush.â He took a deep breath, still avoiding Vernonâs dark eyes. âAnd I enjoy thinking that our love is real and that someday we can say cheesy stuff like âTill death do us partâ but-â â âYou mean till my dad finds out?â â âVernonâŚâ â âWhat?â
Seungkwanâs frustration was growing once again. He just didnât know how to explain this without making a fool out of himself. âItâs not like I think your fatherâs a bad guy but⌠w-what if I do something wrong and he⌠w-well, you know- d-does his job?â
Silence. Well, if you ignored the mainstream pop music playing quietly in the background and the coffee maker making weird noises. âSeungkwanâŚâ Vernon tried to find the right words. He didnât like seeing Seungkwan so anxious, even if he could understand the reason for it.
âKwannie, your dad works in finances, right?â âRightâŚ?â âSo will he try to get me into a horrible contract that makes me lose all my money when he does not seem to like me?â âNo- Vernon- That would be unnecessary work for him-â âExactly.â
Silence. Again. Vernon could clearly see how Seungkwanâs braincells seemed to connect slowly as he tried to understand what the heck Vernon was talking about. He even stopped nibbling on his straw for a moment.
âOh.â âSo you finally understand?â âI mean- I- Well, is it really just a job for your dad- I mean heâs not called death just because of a job, right?â âHm⌠while he does enjoy his job, heâs not so fond of unnecessary work. He also has kids and a man at home, you know?â
With furrowed eyebrows and doe-eyes Seungkwan looked at his partner, still not quite understanding that he would not die if he made even one mistake. Is he joking?
âAnd what about your other dad?â âHuh? Ah, he works in a flower-shop right down the street.â âVernon- Thatâs not what I meant-â âWell, what do you want to hear?â
This was getting embarrassing. A flower-shop? Really?
âSo none of your dads are gonna kill me if I⌠I donât know, make them mad on accident?â âSeungkwan, my dear. The chances of that iced americano killing you are higher than everything else.â
Damn. Seungkwan didnât need to get humbled that badly yet somehow this was exactly what he needed.
âAre you sure?â âYup.â
Seungkwan couldnât help himself but break out into a little somewhat nervous and somewhat relieved laugh. This was so absurd. He was so scared of meeting Vernonâs parents yet there was nothing really to be scared about. At least according to Vernon. Well, he probably knows his parents better than I doâŚ
âGosh, sorry⌠I bet theyâre nice people but itâs just-â âItâs fine, Kwannie.â
There it was again. That damned smile that let Seungkwan melt every. single. time. Just a little smirk and he felt like he was becoming one with his coffee. Maybe someday Seungkwan would replace the melted caramel in his coffee.
âTheyâre actually quite excited to know you, you know? In a good way. They know that youâre making me the happiest Iâve ever been and they hope that youâll be the reason for that in the future as well. So no death do us part stuff, okay?â
Seungkwanâs coffee seemed to get colder while his heart was slowly filled with warmth.
âReally?â âWell, arenât your parents happy about our relationship?â Vernon asked with a pout that let Seungkwan melt again.
âOf course they are!â âWell, see? Just because I grew up a little bit⌠different doesnât mean that my parents donât want the best for me, Seungkwan.â
The coffee addic- lover needed a moment to think while slightly biting down on that soggy straw. He was still a nervous trainwreck but hearing Vernonâs words soothed him in a weird way. While Seungkwan took his moment to grasp the concept of not dying because of a little mistake, Vernon ordered black tea before looking back to his partner.
âWhatâs on your mind, hm?â âThat this straw tastes like shit.â
Vernon expected more concerns or even anxiety about not knowing what kind of flowers to gift his parents, yet moments like these reminded Vernon of why exactly he was so in love with this man. Both looked at each other in silence before bursting out laughing.
âSo⌠do you feel more comfortable with meeting my dads? I promise, theyâre nice people. A little bit emo but⌠you know, they accept other colours as well.â Vernon asked carefully while trying to joke around a bit. Jokes calm down, right?
âHmmâŚâ Seungkwan thought out loud and his lips finally separated from that straw. Probably because his cup was empty. âI mean⌠I still feel like Iâm gonna pass out by the thought of that but⌠as long as I wake up again?â â âYou will.â â âWell then⌠I think Iâm ready.â
Seungkwan smiled and Vernon simply smiled back while carefully stroking Seungkwanâs hand. That was easier than I originally anticipated, Vernon thought to himself while his black tea was being brought by an old lady. Maybe Seungkwan isnât such a scaredy-catâŚ
The rest of the date seemed to continue in a calmer manner. An unholy amount of bad jokes and one or maybe two coffees later the couple left the little cafĂŠ while holding hands and enjoying the warmth of the sunlight. Vernon was so glad that Seungkwan didnât seem too anxious anymore. He was already planning on how to really introduce him to his parents when Seungkwanâs grip suddenly tightened and he looked like he had seen a ghost.
âAre you okay, Kwannie?â âWhat kind of flowers does your dad like? What if I buy the wrong type or ones that are too cheap or whack and-â âOh for godâs sake, Boo Seungkwan!â
