kpbkâ:
When Eddie was four, his father had taken him to a dog shelter near Derry. He didnât remember much, which was to say he didnât remember anything. He had been four, after all. But his father had taken pictures, long gone yellow for the years passed. Sometimes he enjoyed grabbing old albums and going through the memories; Those were the only times his Ma didnât mind the dust, the only times she didnât scare him off while talking about allergies. Eddie knew she liked the pictures just as he did and perhaps that was one of the reasons why, even with all things considered, he still loved his mother. She liked the pictures, too.
There had been a puppy too scared to move, too scared to approach them. Eddie had tried to calm him down and, as a child would, funnily called out to him. The puppy didnât move, Eddie did not manage to convince him to come closer.
For some reason, the sight before his eyes brought up the memories engraved in those photographs. He remembered the puppy and his weak attempts to make contact.Â
But that was no puppy and he was not four. Eddie could see, even with the lack of light, the bruises on Richieâs skin and he could see blood. He tried a few steps in Tozierâs direction. He was recoiling, as if he could disappear. Please, donât disappear, Eddie wanted to say but knew how childish it would sound.
âYouâre safe now.â, a few more steps and yes, he was definitely seeing blood. âWeâve come to take you back, Rich, itâs okay.â, Eddie heard a chuckle from behind him and looked back to find nothing. He was shaking head to toes. âIT wonât hurt you now, I promise, okay?â
There was another chuckle. âPlease, please donât hide.â, and to think he promised himself he wouldnât cry.
The clown was mocking him. Mocking them. Richieâs pain was comedy to IT and Eddie wished he could be as brave as Bill to stand up and fight IT, to do something, anything. He wished he could be as brave as Bill, so he tried to be.
It wasnât funny. Not at all. The mocking giggles echoing around them seemed to further Richieâs despair even at the sound of Eddieâs most soothing voice. He felt torn between cowering even more at the prospect of it being another of ITâs tricks and believing it full-hearted, allowing himself to feel at least a bit better with his friends by his side.
Perhaps it was the crying in Eddieâs pleading that did it. Richie had retreated far enough to be hidden by the shadows, but he raised his head and just watched. The losers stood before him, with Eddie leading them. His eyes quickly focused on the smaller boy. (why is he here? why would Eddie go this far for anyone? for me?)
âDonât come closer.â, Tozier warned, an itch at the back of his head telling him to do it.
âRichie, youâre safe, honeyâ, Beverly promptly ignored him and stood by Eddieâs side. Rich recoiled, tight and tense.Â
(Letâs play, Richie! Letâs play all together, shall we? Your friends are going to loooove it here, just like you. Specially Eddie Bear)
âBut you arenât!â, the boy sounded hoarse and tired. Even if all of this was Pennywiseâs doing, there was no way in hell Richie was risking his friends getting in big trouble.Â
âPlease, just-â, he groaned and rubbed his hands over his face. His head was pounding. A music box was playing in the distance, but it seemed to get closer by the second.Â
âDonât go.â, it was weak and sounded off. The rubbing became more intense, to the point his glasses were askew on his face. âYou left me, all of you. Who would want to be friends with the trashmouth?â, Richie threw his head back, barely containing the laughter. It wasnât one of his known Voices. No accents or falsettos. Richie sounded hollow, like staring into the void while it stares back at you.
âLetâs play a game! How about Street Fighter?â, Richie giggled, planting both hands on the ground harshly. âOh Iâve got a better one! Truth or dare.â, Tozier opened his eyes, bright gold glowing in the dark space. âTruth or dare, Eddie Bear.â, he raised poorly to his feet, eyes staring right at the smaller boy.Â
âHow does it feel seeing the only person who ever loved you losing their fucking mind?â, Richie continued before Eddie could even have a chance.Â
