SAS Rogue Heroes - S01E01 - Paddy x Eoin
Sleep don't visit, so I choke on sun And the days blur into one And the backs of my eyes hum with things I've never done Sheets are swaying from an old clothesline Like a row of captured ghosts, over old dead grass Was never much, but we made the most Welcome home Ships are launching from my chest Some have names, but most do not If you find one, please Let me know what piece I've lost Peel the scars from off my back I don't need them anymore You can throw them out Or keep them in your mason jars I've come home All my nightmares escaped my head Bar the door, please don't let them in You were never supposed to leave Now my head's splitting at the seams And I don't know if I can... Here beneath my lungs I feel your thumbs press into my skin again

"I'm not sure I can forgive myself for any of it."
I could talk all day about how great the exploration of Irishness is in The Terror and The North Water through Crozier and Sumner. The way it challenges a simplified view of history that paints all Irish people as passive historically innocent victims of colonialism. How their Irishness hinders their credibility and social mobility but they are still seen as privileged by the working class English men on their ships. Being the sole survivors of their voyages but never truly being able to reintegrate into the empire that they ruined their lives just for a chance to always be an outsider in.

Is it the hour? We leave this resting-place Made fair by one another for a while. Now, for a god-speed, one last mad embrace; The long road then, unlit by your faint smile. Ah! the long road! and you so far away! Oh, I'll remember! but . . . each crawling day Will pale a little your scarlet lips, each mile Dull the dear pain of your remembered face. . . . Do you think there's a far border town, somewhere, The desert's edge, last of the lands we know, Some gaunt eventual limit of our light, In which I'll find you waiting; and we'll go Together, hand in hand again, out there, Into the waste we know not, into the night

Paddy grew roses, after the war.
He was buried with family, and there are red roses on his grave.

On the 23rd September 1941 Eoin writes to Ambrose, from the heat and flies of the camp at Kabrit,
'Don't come out here if you can help it...The Adair Arms and a thick glass of Guinness and heavy rain outside haunt every moment of the day.'*

"I love you. I love you. I love you. I'll write it in waves. In skies. In my heart. You'll never see, but you will know. I'll be all the poets, I'll kill them all and take each one's place in turn, and every time love's written in all the strands it will be to you."

"You see, I keep waking up and finding myself alive. No matter how hard I try. It's like a horse race, but, actually, you're riding on a carousel, so there's no chance your horse will overtake the one in front... and the one behind you will never catch you up.
The horse in front is contentment. The horse behind you is death.
There I am. Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair Mayne, sitting on a plaster fucking horse, unable to get off the fucking carousel.
You sure got off the carousel, though, didn't you ?"
"I was spun off. That was not my choosing."
"No, you got off to stick around the desert."
