Imagine being a nurse at George Washington hospital,
It's a clam night and you're trying not to jinx it so you can go home on time. But then the phone rings - the red one - and you barely have time to prepare before the President of the United States is being brought in with a gunshot wound
And dating Josh you’ve met the president a time or two so he trusts you. You're explaining what's happening around you as you try not to think about why he was shot at and if everyone else was ok
Things go so fast. Suddenly you're being called over by one of your coworkers as they rush someone else in
Only, when you go to help its Josh laying unconscious on the gurney
A/n: What is this? plot development? who's she? this was not proof read good luck, enjoy
Josh didn't particularity like being left with his thoughts. Normally he'd fill the void with work, but he couldn't seem to do that without his attention turning to that which he's trying to avoid. It was an annoying little paradox. He couldn't do nothing without thinking about the conversation he'd had, but he couldn't work and not think of you, the subject of the conversation that's lead to such disturbance.
It was a dreary evening. Rain was drizzling down in an even pace, the white noise fading in and out of his mind. The air buzzed with the uncertainty of thoughts better left unpacked. Josh wanted nothing more then to run away from it, but how could he when the little box he'd ignored for so long was placed so gently in front of him. It's not like his friends hadn't made enough joke about it for the thought to have never crossed his mind, but there was something different about it this time. Helen. Gentle, kind Helen pointed it out so earnestly and if an outsider thought there was something there how could he brush it aside?
It started with a conversation. Josh had been telling Helen about the trip to Vermont when things went sideways. What had been an easygoing chat turned far more serious then he'd imagined.
"Josh, I can’t- i think we should call this off," Helen said uncertainly.
Her eyes had searched his- for what he still doesn't know- but she must not have found it as tears welled up in hers.
Josh for his part had been in shock. Maybe this relationship hadn't had a clear destination in place, but this had felt so out of the blue. "...you're breaking up with me over a business trip gone wrong?"0
"No!" She said definitively. Only to amend, "yes." Then shaking her head, "I don't know."
He took her hands hoping to be reassuring. "Nothing happened."
Eyes downcast Helen nodded. "I know."
"Do you?"
She looked up and the tears were gone. Then with a clear voice she said, "Yes. You say nothing happened and I believe you... but I can't help thinking you wanted it to."
What is that supposed to mean? "What are you talking about?"
"I've seen the way you look at them"-she rises her hand to silence him when he went to interject- "no Josh listen. Maybe it isn’t conscious but I've seen it. Plus the way you talk about them."
Josh had started to feel put on the spot at this point. Getting agitated he exclaimed, "I don't talk about them any different then I do anyone else."
Helen's voice takes on the tone she uses with her students making Josh feel like a little kid getting a talking to. "Josh, You'd think they'd hung the stars in the sky judging by the way you speak."
"Are you trying to say I love them?"
"I don't know." She shakes her head but it's clear there's more on her mind.
"Helen."
"You can lie to yourself about how you feel all you'd like, but don't do it to me." It's the sharpest he's ever heard her speak and that alone almost silences him. At the very least it gives him something to focus on other then her words.
"Helen," he pleads. For what he doesn't know. For her to stay? To go? To not change the status quo?
"I hope someone cares for me as much as you do for them."
He hadn't notice her gathering her things only saw them in her arms as she delivered her goodbye.
"So that's it?" He asked still in a whirlwind.
She just nods offering a simple, "Take care of yourself Josh."
"Nothing happened," He said once more into the empty room, but if he wasn't trying to convince Helen anymore whats the point?
And now here he was watching the rain. Gazing without really seeing anything. He didn't have feelings for you. He would know if he did. You simply couldn't spend that much time with a person without knowing how you feel about them. And yet something was gnawing at him.
It was the certainty with winch she had spoke. The woman had been convinced she knew his feeling the even he himself, but how could she? Sure Josh loved spending time with you. And you were great to work with, falling into sync with each other with ease. He loved the quiet moments in-between crises where you could just be yourselves. You brought him peace and he loved how easy it was to laugh with you. And he loved you and getting to see you and- wait.
Josh brings his train of thought to a grinding halt. He didn't- couldn't- Josh did not just think that.
Ok. It wasn't too late to put a lid back on the box and move on. Shit it was like his own version of Pandora's box. Visions of how this could only go terribly wrong were flooding his thoughts. If you didn't love him, If you broke up, If it ruined your friendship, if, if, if. He's not sure how long he sits there with 'what if's' circling his brain.
What if.
What if.
What if.
What if you loved him back. Wait what? OH no. Oh no, no, no.

Josh Lyman x reader
A/n: Me crawling out of the woodwork to post this. I hope it's good let me know what you think <3
Josh runs up to you falling into step as you walk. "Hey."
You spare him a glance noting his fidgety hands. "Hey. How are you doing?"
"Hm? Oh I'm fine."
You wait a minute for him to drop some ball on you. Only he doesn't just keeps walking beside you.
You stop walking abruptly Josh catching on after a step. Still he doesn't say anything. "Great," You drawl out.
You start to walk away eyeing him the whole time. Josh doesn't move to fallow you anymore witch is somehow even more unnerving.
"Y/N," he says stopping you in your tracks once more.
"Yeah?"
He opens his mouth only to sigh. "I'll see you at senior staff."
"O-k." Whatever that was about can't be good. Here's hoping you won't be the one to deal with it.
Josh seemed fine at senior staff. Whatever was bothering him before clearly not on his mind as he argued with Toby over the policy of something you hadn't payed attention to. It probably wasn't a good thing that you had blocked out a work meeting in favor of over analyzing your friends behavior, but he was acting weird and someone ought to keep an eye on that.
And yet there was no abnormal behavior to note. Even as you go over the events of the day in your office nothing in the oval struck you as something to worry about. You were starting to second guess your concern when someone knocks on the door.
Josh walks in closing the door behind him. "Hey."
Here we go again. "Hey."
"The Vermont dinner is happening," he announces. Shrugging it off as if it's no big deal.
If you glare at him a little no one needs to know, screw technically your boss. "You mean that dinner you told me not to worry about?"
"Yeah." At least he has the decency to look embarrassed.
"And it's a big deal," you confirm. Obviously it's of some importance if he's circling back to it but just how bad was the situation.
He shifts in his seat looking put out. "Apparently."
"And everyone is going." Now your just playing with him but he deserves it.
"Yeah."
With faux forgetfulness you tap your chin asking, "We've been talking about this for how long?"
"It wasn't supposed to be something!" Josh defends.
"But it is." Ok, ok you've had your fun it's time to get serious about this.
"There's no way we can get everyone there."
"No there isn't. "
There's an obvious next step here, the both of you waiting for the other to take it. Josh is ignoring your pointed stare so you clear your throat meaningfully.
"I don't want to tell him," Josh explains looking at the ground.
"Well, I don't either," You exclaim.
The staring contest lasts longer then either of you will ever admit. Nor will you mention the round of rock paper scissors that fallows. And how would they find out with only the exclamations of "Damn it!" and "yes!" to go off of.
Not that that was the end of it by a long shot. Once it was discovered that the two of you knew this was happening and that you dropped the ball on it you were voluntold to go as representation for the wight house.
And now with no time to get there and even less to plan you and Josh were doing the best you could to get your lives together and get out to Vermont.
"Did you get the hotel booked for Vermont?" Josh double checks.
The two of you are boarding the plane that will take you there, so you're not really sure what he plans to do if you answer no.
And you weren't saying no. You managed to complete the impossible task he left to you. Well mostly. "Yeah…"
"What?" He eyes you nervously. Stopping in middle of the isle. The man behind you grumbling suggestively.
You push Josh farther along and coming upon your seats hoisting your carry-on into place. "Well turns out they there was only one room available."
He copy's your movements, then offers you the window seat. "You've got to be kidding me."
"That's what happens when you take so long to book a room." You shrug it off like it doesn't bother you. Sure there would be two queen beds, but it was annoying that Josh insisted not to look into this event and now you had to deal with the repercussions.
"Right." That seems to shut him up. So you settle in for the flight.
Thankfully it's not a long flight and just as you've reached 30,000 feet it's time to start your descent again. You gather your luggage and head out. The two of you have a brief argument over who will drive the rental car which you forfeit your claim to in favor of getting to your room.
After what feels like forever-but is probably just the stress of traveling talking-you make it to the front desk of your hotel. Checking in goes fairly easily and before you know it you and Josh are heading for the elevator as the lady behind the desk calls, "Congratulations."
"What was that about?" Josh questions.
"No idea."
The third floor seems so far away. With the exhaustion of working today then catching a flight your ready to go right to bed. The elevator stops on the second to let off a woman and her kids. You try not to be annoyed over it, instead taking joy in the lack of obstacles left.
"Here we are," Josh says opening the door to your room.
Only, that can't be right. Inside is a lovely spacious room. It's just, there's only one bed.
You and Josh stare at it for a moment before simultaneously turning to look at each other.
"I didn't plan this!" You exclaim. You don't think he would assume that you did, it just feels better making the fact clear.
"Maybe there was some sort of mix up," he offers.
Yes of course! Surely they wouldn't have booked you a room like this on purpose. Except when Josh calls down and explains the situation they apologize but say it's the only room the have. Josh locks eyes with you as the information sets in.
Ok great. "It's only for two nights," Josh points out.
"Right. No big deal." Does he feel as awkward about this as you do?
"You can have it." The both of you say together. And that's what gets you to laugh. This whole situation has been so absurd and it just keeps going.
"It's a big bed," Josh hedges.
"You don't kick in your sleep do you?" Were you really going to do this?
"Me?! You think I would kick in my sleep?"
"Is that a confession?"
"I'm wounded." He lifts a hand to his heart.
"Oh I'm in for it tonight." You shake your head in mock disappointment. "I'm getting ready first."
You gather your stuff and head to the bathroom before he can object. Really you just want a moment to process alone. Every step of the way has pushed you and Josh closer and closer and it felt like there was no more space left to breath.
You shake your head and start to brush you teeth. If you take a little longer then normal no one needs to know, besides dental hygiene is important. Now that you've cleared your mind you can't help realize what exactly you agreed to. Sure you and Josh were friends, but sharing a bed? That felt like a step to far for you relationship. And now you had to act all chill about it.
Splashing some water on your face you take a deep breath. Time to face the music.
Walking back into the bedroom you find Josh talking on the phone. When he sees you he hands it to you saying, "Here talk to Toby." And then he walks into the bathroom.
"HI Toby," You say pleasantly, looking over the documents Josh brought.
"Hey," He greets. "Where did you put your copy of the health care bill?"
"I left it on Sam's desk with all my annotations," You explain. "He didn't lose it did he?"
"I'll have too check." Toby is quite for a moment.
What had he and Josh been talking about? And why didn't he want to talk to you about it?
"Toby, Everything ok?"
"Yeah, just hurry back."
Ok kinda weird, but whatever. You exchange a few reminders and then your getting off the phone.
Josh is still in the bathroom so you start to work on the stuff he left laying out.
He walks out a few minutes later but by then your sucked into the information in front of you.
"Toby say anything important?" He asks.
"'Hurry back.'" You point to a sentence asking, "Do we not have someone who's job it is to fix typo's?"
"Don't even get me started," He grumbles. "which side do you want?"
You snap your head up like a deer caught in headlights. No wait your not freaking out about this at all. So you claim your side like your ordering lunch. Josh nods at your request going to the other side. Well, you can't get anymore work done now. So you fallow him to the bed only on your side.
Josh was right, it is a big bed. Even once you both climb in there's space between you. But he's still right there. It's not a big deal, and yet you can't stop thinking about it.
You must fall asleep at some point because suddenly the sun is up and Josh is gone. A quick glance at the clock shows you've only slept in a little so you don't stress it as you get ready for the day. Besides there was only so much you could work on while here.
You find Josh at the continental breakfast downstairs. "You could've woke me," You say sitting down. You regret it immediately though you didn't grab any food or coffee before you did.
"For this? I think you had the right idea," he jokes.
"Any plans?" You steal a piece of bacon from his half eaten plate.
"I need to call couple people, but I should wait till later for that." Josh seems to be planing his day still, which means it's the perfect time to strike.
"Great, for starters let's go get some real breakfast. My treat."
"Well if you're buying let's go." He stands offering you his arm.
And the two of you are off. You can't help being excited. You don't bring any work, you aren't meeting someone you need to convince to do something. It's just you and Josh doing something fun together, and the best part is no one will recognize you here.
You find some diner and slid into a booth. You both order coffee's that are actually good and it breaths life into the conversation.
"You know jokes on them sending us out here as punishment, we're going to have a great time," You declare.
"I'm glad it's with you," Josh says sincerely.
"Is that because I'm buying you food?"
"Can't you just take the win?"
You chuckle in good humor. He means it, you know he does. Because you feel the same way. There was something about Josh that made dealing with all the inconveniences fun, or like an adventure. Plus he was just good company.
The diner almost feels magical, there's this atmosphere that makes you feel at home and you wish you could live in this moment forever.
Alas all good thing must come to an end, and the two of you are heading out. You go back to the room and the two of you start to work on what you can. But before you know it it's time to get ready. It's a little awkward at first again as you figure out the logistics, but you make it work.
When you walk out of the bathroom adjusting your outfit Josh takes you in with wide eyes. "You look beautiful," he says in almost wonder.
"Thank you." You can't help smiling at the compliment. Clearing your throat, "You ready for this?"
Josh offers you his arm again, "Let's do this."
You two are separated almost as soon as you walk into the event. Numerous people wanting the attention of a white house staffer. You can't even count the number of people who talk your ear off before you're all ushered in to dinner. Luckily you and Josh are reunited at this point.
"There you are," he says in relief.
"You're the one who disappeared," You point out.
"Was not."
"Were too."
The mini argument is interrupted by someone across the table asking you a question, but that doesn't mean it's forgotten.
It is good to have Josh back at your side as you navigate the conversations over dinner. Thank's to your tag teaming dinner flies by, and you're gathering your stuff to go.
Or you would be if some lady hadn't asked Josh for a moment 'real quick'.
"Vultures the lot of them." A new voice says next to you.
"Honestly they're pretty tame," you counter. "You should see what they're like back in DC."
"You're from DC too?" He asks in delight.
"Well, not from, but I work there. In the white house actually." You try to be modest, but it's hard when you take so much pride in your position.
"It's great to meet you. I'm Jack."
"Hi Jack," You smile at him. What was someone like him doing in a place like this?
You see Josh give you a 'get me out of here' look across the way and start to excuse yourself. "Nice meeting you."
"Wait, I didn't catch your name," He calls after you.
You smile over your shoulder, "That's because I didn't throw it."
You collect Josh with some lame excuse and the two of you leave without looking back. The trip back to the hotel is filled with laughter as you one up each other with the bad conversations you were subjected to. And before you know it your back to your room.
Maybe it's because you have one night under your belt, or maybe it's because of the good mood you've shared all day, but there's no nervousness this time when you climb into the same bed.
You even feel bold enough to turn to face Josh on his side of the bed. "Next time I bring up an event you are going to listen to me about it." It's not a question, and you both know it and still he has the nerve to say, "but everything worked out so well."
And you can't really argue with him about that so you just turn to face the other way and go to sleep.
A/n: This is really short and self indulgent, but I have a new interest in this man. So if I have to write the fics myself so be it. If anyone has in interest in more Mark Greene let me know
"Well, it only took 12 hours of surgery but my patient is going to make it," you announce walking into the ER.
"That's good news," Mark Greene says handing you a coffee cup.
You eye him suspiciously. "Whats this for?"
He looks up oh so innocently. "Aren't you still on for another 5 hours?"
"Ugh don't remind me." You take a hesitant sip of the coffee and finding it to your liking drink it in earnest. "Next time I get a 911 page I'm not answering."
"Oh?" Mark questions.
"Yeah what are they gonna do, fire me?" You joke.
He chuckles softly, "that is a distinct possibility yeah."
"My feet are killing me."
"Here take a seat while you can." He guides you to the chair and everything. He's smiling down at you so sweetly, oh how nice it would be to stay in this moment forever.
"Get a room lovebirds," someone calls out.
You look away quickly in embarrassment. Yeah right, as if Mark had feelings for you. But when you glance back over he's blushing so you can't help it when your heart beat speeds up a bit.
Tumblr is rolling out a new reblog/notes system that completely disregards creators. In their new system, they're taking a twitter-style approach where reblogs will have their own notes that DO NOT contribute to the original post's notes.
Because of this, creators will no longer be able to see an accurate display of likes/reblogs/etc. This is completely altering the way feedback and responses to works are going to be received on this website.
If you come across a fan work that you enjoy, please take the extra step to go to OPs original post, and leave your comment/like/reblog there. Or go one step further and send an ask to OP directly to tell them what you liked!
I really hope Tumblr staff reverses course and reverts to the original reblog system for the sake of the large base of creators who use this site to share their works, but until then, please be considerate and make sure the creators here see/feel the love.
The most important thing you can do in this life is write hyper-specific fanfiction for you and six other people. Don’t believe anything else you read.
Sitting on Josh's desk eating goldfish.
Josh: Well just need two more votes to get the majority
Feeds him a snack to shut him up
Sam who Josh was talking to: Am I interrupting?
You throw a goldfish at them
Dam: HEY!
You: You should have caught them
Sam: How come Josh gets to be gently fed and I get attacked?
You: Sam you remind me of my sisters
Sam, looking faltered: oh
You: But I already have 3 of those, so knock it off
Sam: :(
