Ten years ago, when we first started @thescoutguide, we were fairly new to the publishing world. We’d held jobs in sales and photography, but still had much to learn about printing and production—let alone creating a franchise. Probably the best professional training we’d had was owning our own businesses prior to launching TSG, which had prepared us for the many hats we’d find ourselves wearing, especially during those early days. We sought out experts to help guide us with the nuts and bolts, but what we didn’t realize was that by creating a company around working with small business owners, we were surrounding ourselves with some of the best sources of inspiration and business advice we could ask for—people who had taken a risk, followed their passions, built relationships, adapted to changes, and made a strong impact on their communities all while managing and growing their own businesses. Recently, as we approached our ten-year milestone, we thought back to some of the lessons we’ve learned from working with small business owners over the past decade—including our very own franchisees, who have been key to our growth and success. Here are ten highlights that have helped guide us along the way.
It’s about collaboration, not competition.
Based on what we’ve learned over the years working with small business owners, it’s hard to overstate the importance of showing up and supporting one another, and few people seem to understand this better—or set a better example—than the small business community. Attending, promoting, and participating in each other’s events; referring clients; spreading the word about other people’s businesses; and working together isn’t just good for business, it keeps you inspired and connected.
There’s nothing more interesting than authenticity.
Small business owners have dedicated their lives to their craft. Their expertise and experiences are invaluable, their stories and perspectives are unique, and their offerings are curated and cultivated by them and often them alone. Take it from us—there is truly endless inspiration to be found in getting to know the small business owners in our communities. Plus, they are really entertaining and lovely people.
It’s worth the risk.
Deciding to strike out on your own is scary. However, after speaking with many small business owners over the years, the vast majority seem to believe that taking the leap was absolutely the right decision. The reasons may vary, from having the ability to forge your own path, to going at your own pace, to taking a more personal approach to your business, but consensus is that you’ll find rewards in unexpected places. We’ve certainly found that to be the case.
Being open to evolving is essential.
If the past few months have taught us anything, it’s that we all need to be able to adapt. Small business owners appear to be especially good at this. Maybe it’s because they’re especially attuned to their clients’ needs, or conditioned to be able to learn new things and make changes quickly, but whether it’s starting an e-commerce site or embracing social media or coming up with an entirely new business offering or even model, small business owners are excellent at thinking outside of the box and answering the call when it comes to meeting their customers’ needs.
Wearing a lot of hats goes with the territory.
Whether they’re a one-man show or have a team, small business owners are usually involved in every aspect of the business. Floral designers often double as their own social media managers, boutique owners frequently are responsible for business operations…when you think about what it entails to run a business, especially in an age when everyone is expected to have a beautiful and constantly updated Instagram feed, it’s a pretty amazing juggling act.
A rising tide lifts all boats.
When one person or business succeeds, gains recognition, or develops a following, everyone around them benefits. We’ve found the small business community to be deeply interconnected and for the most part, eager to help those coming up in the ranks. It’s this beautiful reciprocity that makes the work so rewarding.
Owning a business is a labor of love.
The whole notion of working 9 to 5 goes out the window for small business owners. But you 100% get back what you give. And at the end of the day, doing what makes you happy, being able to provide jobs for your employees, and feeling like you make a difference to your clients and community make the toil and long hours pay off in spades. There’s no greater satisfaction than that.
You have to put yourself out there.
We’ve learned this from both the business owners who advertise with The Scout Guide and our editors/owners. If you’re going to survive—let alone thrive—you can’t stand on the sidelines. Believing your endeavor will succeed isn’t enough. Every day you have to make connections, negotiate with vendors, and stay in touch with customers.
It’s not about vanity.
Launching your own business is not a glamorous project. While on the outside, your name and headshot might be on your website and Instagram feed, in reality, there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that goes into the work. Usually at the beginning (and even years later), you’re working on your own, with the tasks involving everything from manual labor to all-nighters staring at a computer screen. But in the end, the effort is worth it.
You never arrive.
It’s incorrect to assume that a small business owner will reach a moment when their mission is complete. Often, once they reach the point when their business is a success, they have to keep adapting to stay relevant, or see a need or opportunity that they feel compelled to take on. We’ve found that it’s just not in a small business owner’s personality type to coast when there’s a customer to serve or community to engage.

The Gill Family Brings their Farm to Your Table at Jackson Drug
From beef 4-H to the Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program to opening the Jackson Drug restaurant, the Gill girls have a passion for selling their family’s beef locally.
"We are the first and only true farm to table restaurant in Jackson where the same family who raises the cattle serves the meat," says Nikki Gill.
Siblings and Jackson Drug owners, Nikki, Patrick and Jessica helped out on their family’s nearly 100-year old ranch during the summer hay seasons since they were knee high. They all drove the 1950 Farmall tractor up and down the fields raking the hay into rows. And at 12-years-old, both girls learned to drive a stick shift on a 2-ton stock truck.
In 2010 their dad, Robert Gill, bought the historic Jackson Drug building that his grandfather Bruce Porter built in 1937. In 2016, Jessica, Nikki, and Patrick had the opportunity to bring back the iconic Jackson Drug. Some of their fondest memories of their childhood were sipping milkshakes while swiveling on stools at the counter of their great-grandfather’s pharmacy.
“We grew up at the counter,” Nikki says. “Like most kids in town, we had a charge account and would get our after school snacks at the Jackson Drug.There was never a grand goal of owning a restaurant,” she says. But somehow the three siblings found themselves turning the pharmacy into one of the best places to go for burgers in Jackson Hole. Ranching in Jackson is not the most lucrative, so we decided to diversify by selling our beef locally.”
They are grateful to Rammells, a mom and pop beef processor that only handles 5-10 animals a week, for making it all possible. The Rammells have been working with the Gill kids since 2015, when they took advantage of the popularity of the eat local movement and added a new revenue stream to the business by selling cuts to locals through their CSA program and at the Farmer’s Market on the Town Square in Jackson Hole.
Jessica and Nikki kept the original Jackson Drug dishes – egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad and cheese pretzels and expanded the menu by adding burgers, salads, grilled cheeses and many more delicious dishes. Most of the menu is dairy and gluten free. And because of the girls’ allergies, Jackson Drug boasts a true gluten free fryer.
Jessica Gill says it’s great to be back on town square, where the two patriarchs of her family did business. Her great grandfathers Bruce Porter (a pharmacist who started Jackson Drug) and Lew Gill, who owned the Log Cabin bar on the other side of the elk antler arches where Lee’s T’s is today were staples on the town square.
“Tradition is very much alive, she says. “We even make all the ice cream like we did back in the day using the same brand of ice cream machine.”

STYLING THE PERFECT BLACK SLIP WITH 5 DIFFERENT LOOKS @JHALTITUDE
Brianna Moteberg, owner and the pretty face behind one our favorite boutiques in Jackson Hole, is passionate about showing you the “capsule wardrobe.” Essentially, getting more bang for your buck with purchasing the one perfect basic item. We had a cup of coffee and a nice long chat with her and this is what we learned...
I will never have a capsule wardrobe. That is usually defined by a total of 33 items in your closet. As in 33 items that includes, shoes, clothing, and accessories. Yup…hard to even imagine at least for me! While that isn’t even a dream for me, I do wholeheartedly work to have a capsule suitcase when traveling (let’s hope that will begin soon-and safely!). I like to refer to it as a capsule suitcase because while I don’t always travel in a carry on, I like to. I want to be able to wear something many ways and to mix and match every single item in my suitcase. Showing my clients how to get more bang for their buck is always a win in my book.
Here, I have taken what I feel is the number one item each closet should have, the slip dress, and styled in 5 ways. Mind you, the slip dress I picked is black, but you could do this with any color or pattern. This slip dress and other items I have worn here could easily fit into a carry-on for a week long trip.
LOOK ONE - Cocktail Party/Dressy Event (below)
I realize the term “dressy” is different here in Jackson Hole than elsewhere but I would feel 100% confident wearing this look to an event pretty much anywhere in the world. I’ve taken the slip dress, added heels (not safe for our boardwalk!) and what I refer to as a cocktail jacket, aka a fancy blazer and a clutch.
LOOK TWO - Date night (below)
Again, date nights with my husband include camping but rest assured, if I was wearing this on camping date night he wouldn’t blink. Always live by the motto “You do You.” I took an oldie but favorite wrap top in a bold color and added some chunky heels to help with comfort…in case we hit the dance floor instead of the s’mores!
LOOK THREE - Business Attire (below)
If you are going to add a black slip dress to your closet, or maybe you already have one, I would keep in mind the neckline. Some might be more comfortable with a higher one, a v neck or a mid level one..again, “You do You.” This slip dress works for my work environment really easily. I can add a blazer, again black here but a color or pattern is a winner too, and viola, it works for my work.
LOOK FOUR - Brunch (below)
When layers are your friend! Here I’m wearing a crop white tight shirt underneath (not one I’d ever on its own but I layer this under jumpers, rompers, tanks, dresses, etc…again, the more ways you can wear it the better!) and paired it with an easy denim jacket that I can wear, tie around my waist if need be (hello pancakes!) or lay it down on the ground to sit on if a picnic is on the agenda.
LOOK FIVE - Travel (below)
I know I know…people always think its “odd” I travel in a dress but I LOVE to. I tried it once and I don’t think I’ll go back. Ladies, trust me. Try it. The tiny airplane bathrooms are so much easier to deal with 😊 As always when traveling I’m 100% wearing comfy shoes that require me to wear socks because no one wants to show up at security with no socks on. I’ve added a casual sweatshirt, reppin’ Jackson Hole wherever I go, and a big bag, ALWAYS, did I say always... a big bag.

DANA - Being an entrepreneur and shop owner is nothing new in my family. My grandmother owned a women's boutique in Miami Beach in the late 1940's called Mildred's, her namesake...
TSG - Number two?
DANA - I'm a classically trained ballet dancer who choreographed, performed, and chaired the modern dance company at the University of Pennsylvania while earning 2 degrees in Communications and Fine Arts.

DANA - I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, FL and am still best friends with my school group I’ve known since we were all 5.
TSG - Can you share your “Terra” philosophy and what you love most about owning a business in Jackson Hole ?
DANA - When it comes to business, I am incredibly decisive, transparent, and always looking to keep things fresh! I created Terra in the spring of 2003 and first opened my doors in July of that year - 17 years and going strong. The best part of my job is undoubtedly the incredible women I've met over the years. I've so enjoyed watching the evolution from timid first time shoppers to seasoned professionals who continue looking to build classic yet versatile wardrobes.

3 Ways to Make a Modern Home Cozy @shannonwhitedesign
Create Inviting Nooks. Built-in window seats or bed nooks are ideal, but you can also achieve this with a comfortable chair or two nestled close to a window. Nooks do not have to be relegated to bedrooms and stairs. They work well off a Kitchen or Family Room - creating a cozy island off a sea of activity - a spot to tuck your feet up while chatting with whomever is making dinner. If you have the luxury of designing your own home from the start, I suggest including "a nook” or at least a few windows where the sill height is at or below 24” to allow you to plop into your favorite chair while still enjoying the view.
*Lighting is Everything. Interiors should glow and beckon at night. It's instinctual…who doesn’t like to cozy-up around a good fire? Here are some tricks to avoid the common mistake of over-lighting your home. It’s the difference between walking into a perfectly lit art gallery where your eye is drawn to the art work and walking into a doctor’s office or an overly lit restaurant (the worst!). If you are in a position to hire a professional lighting designer they can help you create lighting “scenes” where at the push of a button, light levels effortlessly adjust to the desired activity. Many of us will not have that luxury - not to worry - use the tips below to achieve a cozy interior regardless of budget or the style of your home.
Make sure ceiling lights are always on a dimmer! You want to be able to see the glow of the fireplace, a table lamp, the candles.
Choose (at least some) “warm” bulbs that are in the 2700 Kelvin range (this will approximate a soft white incandescent light even if using LED lights). The light color temperature is especially critical in a modern interior, where materials (think black steel, white walls, gray textiles) can feel “cold” in harsh high-contrast light. The higher the Kelvin the brighter the contrast and in my opinion the starker the feel. I would caution against anything higher than 3000 K in a residential interior.
Less is often more. In dining rooms for example, avoid upstaging a chandelier or pendant with too many downlights. If you must add ceiling lights near a table or above an island, position them clear of suspended decorative lighting (to avoid shadows).
Be strategic about task lighting, include it where you need it: project areas, Kitchen prep spaces, your desk, the Laundry. The goal is flexibility. If you have poor eyesight or will have older visitors, it is important to have the option to raise light levels and equally important to be able to lower them.
Focus on materials not the light source. Achieve a warm glow by illuminating architectural elements that will reflect warmly into the space. This is often done by bouncing light onto a wood ceiling from a covered light source (think Jackson Hole Airport). You can do this in your home with lights that illuminate wood paneled walls, built-ins or ceilings, but you can also achieve this effect by positioning a floor lamp above a sofa’s arm draped with a super soft throw or adding reading sconces either side of a bed to softly highlight a stack of books or a special embroidered pillow.
Use Textures and Textiles to Help Balance More “Cold” Materials.
It’s easy to wind up with a mountain interior that is heavy on wood and neutral fabrics or goes too far into the monochromatic gray / black / white / reclaimed color scheme. I look for ways to bring in furnishings that offer a counterpoint. Navy, Forest Green, Orange and Ochre are go to’s, but there are so many options! If color is not your thing, then select a luscious leather or beautifully finished wood to convey a richness and warmth.

Recently we chatted with the adorable Kate Binger of Dwelling - Jackson Hole, Wyoming about her design views on a 1000 Sq Ft. remodel she is working on..... (Here is Kate working on confirmation of the backsplash tile, after the original selection was massively delayed by COVID.)
What kinds of projects interest you when taking on a remodeling design project?
I thoroughly enjoy remodels that push the envelope and reinvent spaces unique to that individuals life. I perform best when I have the opportunity to weave an eclectic aesthetic with smart space planning.
Tell us a bit about what foundational concepts you begin with?
It depends on the project – sometimes we begin with the art launching the color scheme and other times it’s functional living needs. Our clients run the gamut as does the driving force of form and function.
What’s the difference for you between a new construction or remodel?
Remodels mean being creative and problem solving within a certain prescribed box, whereas new construction allows you to be creative without constraints... both are challenging in their own way.

Can you speak to the idea of a home having “good bones” and what kind of bones did this particular job have?
This 1000 sq ft home had terrific natural lighting, high ceilings and a wonderful U-shaped kitchen which are 3 foundations of “great bones.” Specifically, a U-shaped kitchen creates supplemental conversation space and is more inviting for guests (and dogs).
What excites you most about this project?
The previous color palette was incredibly busy, giving no space for the eye to rest. It’s been fun to shift all that, to bringing texture and warmth into a small space allowing for cultivation of calmness and joy.

Looking toward the end of the project, what colors and textures are you planning on importing into the final design phase of the house?
Oiled white oak for the flooring throughout the house will create a rich palette of warm browns for the color foundation. I plan on using oatmeal, smokey olive green, indigo blue, midnight onyx and fuchsia playing together in the space through upholstery, art, hardware, and wallpaper while keeping the painted walls neutral for light and a more cohesive feel.

This sunny spot beckons with a filtered view through oaks to a canyon. A home office doesn’t have to be a room relegated for just one purpose. A “Bonus Room” is a flexible space off a main room, here it is just off the open-plan Kitchen / Dining Room. It is a visually connected space where family members can quickly escape for both quieter and noisier activity. Kids can watch a movie with the doors closed while adults linger over dinner. It offers a spot for a quick call to a client, FaceTime with Grandma, or homework while dinner is made. When this home recently sold, I learned one of the main selling points for the new owner (an interior designer with young children ) was this room - with it’s own entrance - which she planned to use as a home office where she could meet with clients. I love looking at a view while I work, but according to the principles of Fung Shui, the most powerful orientation for your desk is facing the entrance to your office. If the new owner wanted to do so, this room could easily fit a desk in the middle of the room facing the entrance doors. We kept the light fixture high enough that it would allow for flexible furniture arrangement. More often we are presented with the need for “His & Hers” home offices, a need that is elevated when couples are working from home while remaining productive. This space designed for “Her” sits central to the home to allow for easy accessibility as she keeps all of the wheels turning. The custom millwork was kept delicate and fresh to enhance natural light and distinguish her space. A beverage refrigerator hidden in a drawer provides an oasis between emails and screen-shares along with a pullout dog bed for her most trusted colleague. The space is crisp and inviting and reflective of “her” approach to the home and business.

Recently we checked in with Lou Anne Roush of Wyoming Outfitters to talk about summer retail trends. Jeff, Lou Anne and their daughter Hannah Roush, all pitch in to run a true family business right on town square next to the famous antler arches. Their apparel is of course high-end western with having a fabulous selection of cowboy boots and hats for both men and women as well as offering children’s toys and clothing,outdoor apparel, jewelry and home goods and gifts.
Lou Anne mentioned that one item, the “bootie” is still trending as are felt hats both western and fedora style which are a mainstay in their showroom. Her “go to” brands are Tasha Polizzi, Bella Dahl, Rab and Kuhl which appeal to both the local customers and the tourists. They can outfit anyone for fishing, hiking, backpacking, rafting or camping trip with one stop shopping. “We can never go wrong with jewelry, gifts or home goods too - things that travel well.”
On a side note, you can never have enough boots in Jackson Hole. Seen worn with shorts, dresses and pants dressed up or down, they remain a staple in every Jackson Hole closet. KUDAR CABIN REMODEL/PHASE ONE – By Elisa Chambers Owner of Snake River Interiors
We peeked in on a historic remodel for a couple from Virginia that has longed for a home in Jackson Hole for over 30 years. Choosing East Jackson over acres of land, the couple hired Elisa Chambers, Owner of Snake River Interiors, to remodel and add onto the 1910 Historic Cabin that is up Cache Creek.
Elisa, what was your first impression of the Kudar Cabin?
Elisa (Owner of SRI) My first impression was that this cabin was a “diamond in the rough.” I wanted to marry the authenticity of a historic cabin with a contemporary, functional aspect without being cliché. We wanted to make the home larger but not make it look like it went to a bad plastic surgeon. With a small lot that has the national forest as its backyard, we were limited in the amount of square footage but knew we could add to the overall building. We worked hard to make the most of every inch.
Ramona, as a family what drew you to Jackson Hole ?
Ramona (Homeowner) We always knew we would end up in Jackson Hole. Our kids grew up coming to Jackson Hole but we lived in historic Alexandria, Virginia. We all were just waiting for the right time to move here. We wanted to leave the city and the noise and be able to walk or ride our bikes downtown. My husband wanted acreage so having the National Forest in our backyard is the best of both worlds.
What was the pivotal moment where you knew you had hired the right person (Elisa) for your historic remodel?
Ramona (Homeowner) – I’m not new to layout and design. We’ve built several homes previously but have never used a designer before but I was intrigued by Elisa’s vision of making our home a sensual experience. She presented textures such as steel, glass and stone into the new part of the home going beyond just color and fabrics. It was the core of the home that had a “feeling” one that could be activated through the senses. Elisa partnered with Kurt Dubbe of Dubbe Moulder Architects, a local historical architectural expert, to make sure the cabin stayed true to form, and Elisa drew to make the remodel work in the modern world.
What has been the biggest surprise of the project ?
Ramona (Homeowner) - Elisa has drawn color out of me. Being a fan of black and white, I’m now in love with the red herringbone wallpaper we’ve chosen but understanding that and being selective about color will enhance our neutral space. While building in Jackson Hole is not a quick as I’m used to, I’ve appreciated the craftsmanship and the quality that has gone into the home. I credit Elisa with using quality contractors and understanding what the finished home needs to feel and look like.
Elisa (Owner of SRI) The homeowners were dream clients. They appreciated my input and utilized our team, which is what Snake River Interiors can provide. The client, the architect, the contractor and Snake River Interiors married together provided a great recipe for success.

GYDE Architects brings an innovative perspective and lasting impact to all its designs
Anyone who has spent even a few minutes in the town of Jackson has undoubtedly encountered the work of GYDE Architects. If you’ve thrown a wrapper in a sculptural metal trash can, sat on a bench downtown, bouldered at the base of Snow King, or dined at one of the many restaurants Architects Peggy Gilday and Nona Yehia have designed, you have experienced the lasting impact GYDE has had on our community.
”Design is in everything, and our firm is rooted in developing this concept on every scale, whether it be materials, furniture, residential or commercial projects,” says Peggy Gilday.
TWICC TILE
The principle of design in everything permeates the work produced by GYDE Architects at every scale, from a single composite panel known as a “Twicc Tile” to the perforated steel furniture they have created together. Twicc Tiles were the first collaboration between Peggy and Nona. Since then, they have explored sustainable siding specially shaped to harness wind and solar conditions to passively cool homes and other resilient elements that are cost effective to produce.

The team is inspired by Jackson’s unique landscape and ecosystem to create patterns in the metal that reinforce the deep connection they feel to this place.
TETON COUNTY LIBRARY
Because they live in such an extraordinary environment, Peggy and Nona are not afraid to push boundaries to create extraordinary experiences even in the mundane. The same passion that goes into projects as small as a wall panel is applied to projects as big as the Teton County Library. The 23,000 square foot remodel of the library focused on honoring the original building, while providing a thoughtful aesthetic that looked toward the future. The scheme for the updated building addresses the rural to urban transition of our community and provides ample connection to the natural world through natural light and window walls. The project also achieved a LEED gold certification.
VERTICAL HARVEST
Perhaps GYDE’s most well-known project is in the world of vertical greenhouses. As the co-founder of Vertical Harvest, a three-story hydroponic greenhouse located in downtown Jackson, Nona has traveled all over the world to share her vision for the innovative glass house on the side of the parking garage. The greenhouse produces over 100,000 pounds of produce a year, and a critical component of its business model is offering meaningful employment to differently abled community members.
From commercial and community-oriented projects to private residences, “Design in Everything” is a guiding principle. The GYDE team recently completed a home for community member JJ Healy. The residence and the story behind JJ’s move to Jackson is highlighted on the cover of Range Magazine. Everything about the housing compound built on a 3.5 acre property in Schofield Patent was tailored specifically to the client and his family. The materials and forms of the project reference the ranch the family had previously lived on, while bringing in contemporary elements to elevate the design.
Throughout their work, GYDE aspires to create projects with a lasting positive impact on our community.
