BUS STOP BOUTIQUE: THE NEW SPRING COLLECTION IS HERE
Save the Date this Saturday, March 17th for Bus Stop X Afar Launch Party from 11AM-6PM at Bus Stop Boutique, located at 727 S. 4th Street, Philadelphia!
This spring shoe collection hasĀ four brand NEWĀ styles ā Kitten Heels, Chunky Couture Pumps, Chelsea Boots, and of course the signature Oxford (all with a twist). As you may or may not know, all the shoes are designed by owner, Elena Brennan, right here in Philly and handcrafted by artisans. The collection of 27 shoes and boots are limited edition and sold exclusively in the boutique and on the Bus Stop Boutique website.Ā
With this new collection they will be telling their story ofĀ travelling afar to exotic placesĀ going back to Elenaās roots in London and Cyprus, where her family is originally from. These designs are inspired by travels afar, and the culture and experiences in faraway lands. Each style incorporates leathers, colors & design details reminiscent of Elenaās worldly travels.
This will be the fifth shoe collection that Elena has designed in the almost 11 years that Bus Stop has been in Philadelphia.Ā We simply adore each and every collection she has designed. We scouted out Bus Stop Boutique originally due to the unique nature and exceptional variety of both locally designed shoes by Elena Brennan, and internationally designed shoes that you just canāt find anywhere else in Philadelphia. We congratulate Bus Stop Boutique on what we are quite confident will be another stunning collection of shoes. We will see you at the launch party!Ā

AURORA
Aurora ā by Artist: Anne Pivot / 40ā x 40ā / Mixed Media on Canvas
Anne grew up in a family home where she developed a taste for antiques. As a child she loved to paint and frame works of art. She studied communications and moved into media relations, but after ten years in her career she once again heard the call of art. She trained as a decorative painter and learned a variety of techniques (patina, trompe l'oeil ...). Anne became a self-employed craftsman and expressed her art on large scale projects (apartments, houses ...)
By choosing to focus on her painting, Anne traded her brushes for knives to work with the thicknesses of malleable acrylic paint. She likes a mix of medium; the combination of collage, prints, etching and layers of glaze create a warm and colorful atmosphere. She uses different medium (preparations to change the consistency of the paint) and techniques such as collage or image transfer, associated with a succession of layers of paint applied with a knife and then rubbed or scraped. Working the material this way she seeks to achieve an effect of "passing time." Anne places the mark of time on everyday objects. She seeks to pass on this taste of history and patina through her paintings.
THE FLOWERS AT RITTENHOUSE
The Flowers at Rittenhouse ā by Artist: Frederic Thiery / 10 x 10 / Acrylic on Canvas AND Venice the Canale / 5 x 5 / Acrylic on Canvas
Inspired by his father who was a painter, FrƩdƩric was interested from a very early age in drawing and painting. He studied fine arts at the University of Aix-en-Provence. After graduation, he moved to southern Spain where he discovered various crafts: leather work, silk painting, jewelry making, etc. By being in contact with these artisans he learned to make leather accessories (belts, bags) and experimented with cold enamel work (producing the same aesthetic effect as enamel, but without firing). He attended a workshop on porcelain painting to learn this technique and soon he experienced the urge to paint on canvas. FrƩdƩric tends almost to the abstract with his stylized representations. To find the shimmering colors of enamel he combines tiny glass beads in his oil painting. His painting is joyous and colorful. His works dust off the traditional subjects of the past. Much as his philosophy of life, FrƩdƩric wishes to convey softness, joy and harmony through his painting. Humor is an important component of his work, which he expresses through the titles of his works.
SOUS LE SOL PELUREUR GUPIA
Sous Le Sol Pelureur Gupia ā by Artist: Pierre Gutierrez / 10 x 10 / Watercolor on Paper
Hailing from the Algerian port town of Oran, Pierre Gutierrez moved to the other side of the Mediterranean to Marseilles, where he worked in different areas of publishing, design, and advertising.
In 1998, he moved to the neighboring town of Carnoux-en-Provence. It was a happy coincidence that introduced him to the watercolor paintings of the ProvenƧal landscape-painter, Marius Pauzat (1832-1909) and he literally fell under the spell of this work and the aesthetic quality of his creations. Captivated, he began practicing this new painting technique, drawing his themes from the immeasurable beauty of the coastal outskirts of his adoptive region. Backed by invaluable experience in drawing and sketching, Gutierrez adapted to watercolor painting quickly and carved out a niche for himself.
UN DIMANCHE DEISA
Un Dimanche Deisa ā by Artist: Isabelle DeJoantho / 14 x 14 / Mixed Media
Isabelle was born in Montreuil in 1963. Of all the modes of expression, it is in painting and sculpture she has always felt most comfortable. She therefore attended ten years of classes at the Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz School of Art. There, one of her teachers taught her to "dirty" a sheet of paper. On that day she understood that anything goes. The artist would begin with portraits of women. Whether they are painted on canvas or sculpted in clay, Isabelle seeks first to complete the resemblance to the subject, highlighting the reliefs and working beyond the frame. Working with pure abstraction, she gradually comes to mix the two. Guided by her thoughts and mood, the artist now combines the figurative and abstract. The key is first and foremost to convey emotion. For this, the components of the canvas must be created simultaneously. Her feelings, her stories; she draws more from the past identity of the materials she chooses than in creating a work of introspection. In fact, she loves to use all kinds of materials and timeworn objects, marked by a first life. She adds words, imperfect lines drawn in charcoal, "accidental stains" of paint, ink or pigment, and then assembles these elements like pieces of a puzzle. Short and successive, these stories are like little moments of life where people and things are shaped by time. Thus, she juggles material effects to infinitely deconstruct frames of old bikes, textures of a dress or even facial features whose gaze seems to reveal their secrets to us.

THE ARGYLE BOUQUET: MEET HEATHER KING
Itās February at last, which means we have endured the doldrums of Januaryās everlasting days and nights of frigid weather! More importantly, Valentineās Day is right around the corner and with that comes a month of inspiration around every bend. The first day of February sweeps in and envelopes me with a warm and fuzzy feeling that love is in the air. I am always inspired by the beauty this month creates for us in so many capacities. For me personally, I love seeing the beauty of so many beautiful flowers greeting me through every door of every business and home. Thatās what February should be about! Heck, thatās what every month should be about. Iām a flower kind of gal and have done my due diligence in the way of scouting out the best floral design business on the Main Line. My criteria was to find a business that curates a selection of the freshest and most exceptional flowers, whose designs are distinctive from every angle and above all else offers amazing customer service. With so many florists in our area it took some time to be thorough in my research, but Iām proud to say ultimately I found my match with The Argyle Bouquet, located in Suburban Square in the Ardmore Farmerās Market. I am always pleasantly surprised by the superb quality of the flowers that owner, Heather King continually carries in her shop. Heather and her design team arrange bouquets that you honestly will not find anywhere else in our area. The intricate details in the rustic and elegant arrangements that Argyle creates truly make you feel as if you are a part of something really special. I had the opportunity to sit down with Heather King herself, and hear a little more about where she draws her inspiration from and how she discovered her inner talent. Ā Here is what she had to sayā¦Ā
Heather, Iād like to firstly congratulate you on building such a beautiful and successful floral design business here on the Main Line. You have such a keen eye for quality and design, and Iām curious to know when your inspiration with floral design began?
Laurie, thank you! I am still blown away daily by the success of Argyle. MyĀ ākeen eyeā, as you call it, just lives inside me. Wish I could say I have a method, but I think it is simply my style. I buy for the shop as I would for my home. My inspiration -Ā growing up I loved to give flowers toĀ friends when they needed a pick me up. I would go to flower shops that would allow me into the coolers so that I could pick out and design the bouquets as I wantedā¦so itĀ meant more. Years later I started a milk glass collection and one day a particular vase was calling to me that it needed to be filled and when doing so I felt excited, creative and wanted to do more.Ā
Tell me a little more about your background, and how you came about to open The Argyle Bouquet?
I think it began as a little girl. I was raised on a 10 acre farm in Malvern, long before Malvern was cool. We had sheep, goats and lots of areas to garden. My parents would have us out in the soil planting veggies and flowers. Flash forward to around 2012. My Aunt was getting married at my parentās farm and I asked if I could design the florals as my gift to them. Itās amazing what Facebook can do with a sweetĀ little family wedding in your back yard. People started to comment and before you knew it I was doing myĀ nephews Bar Mitzvah. Then school fundraisers. Before I knew it I had taken over my garage and had a small studio! In October of 2013 IĀ received a phone call from theĀ management team of Suburban Square asking me to consider taking the floral stand inĀ their Farmerās Market. The only catch, I would have to be up and running before Thanksgiving. Terrified, IĀ immediately said no and hung up. My husband wasĀ with me and asked what the call wasĀ about. When I told him, he said ācall them backā I think we should check it out. I was up and running 3 weeks later.
You have a wide variety of services that you offer here at The Argyle Bouquet. Can you embellish a bit more on the range of services that you provide?
Our stand isĀ deceiving! We are a full service florist. We do everything from unique hand tied bouquets toĀ wedding florals. We have amazing orchids, plants and succulents. We visit our clientās homes regularly whether they are in need of a large vessel to be filled or planting upĀ their urns with unique seasonal designs. Our shelves are filled with a lovely selection of gift items for the most hard to buy friends!
What is the most important aspect of your business?
Knowing my client, that is what drives me daily. I comb throughĀ catalogs, walk showrooms, ask annoyingĀ questions to my reps and spend hours looking for the most unique flowers from the best growers so that I can deliver the best possible product to my clients. I owe it to them.
I have never seen flowers as healthy and everlasting as the bouquets I have purchased from your business.Ā What is your secret?
Honestly. My secret is not so secret. When you stop by Argyle on any given day you will find us processing flowers. I donāt sell flowers that arenāt fresh. The reason they last is that we process every stem as soon as they arrive. If there is a flaw or it doesnāt look perfect we send it back, plain and simple.
We hear you are opening up a new location in Haverford! How very exciting!Ā What can we expect to see in your new retail location?Ā Ā
You hear correctly! The new location will be in the old Saxbyās on Lancaster Avenue. Argyle Floral-Home-Garden. Ā What you can expect to see in this location is a well cultivated collection of items for your home and garden, (and of course, lots of flowers). Think rustic elegance. I have been searching the area for local artisans as well as items that are small batch and one of a kind. Our plant section will be expanding and we will now be able to provide amazing planters, pots and other essentials to make your outdoor living spaces special. We will finally have a large design space for our large scale events! Ā
Clearly we are huge fans of The Argyle Bouquet, but what do you think separates you as a florist versus other floral businesses along the main line?Ā Ā
I canāt speak for other businesses, only to my own. I LOVE what I do. I love my team and I love my clients. Therefore I owe it to all of them to provide the best experience. Whether it is a little nosegay for a ballerinaās first recital or full scale florals for a coupleās big day. Everyone gets the same level of care and attention. Thatās why we are special.Ā
We think The Argyle Bouquet is a pretty special place too Heather. Ā Stop on by everyone, and then stop on by again. One can never have too many flowers.Ā
