How I ethically use genAI for my writing:

ChatGPT in particular has been so incredibly helpful in my writing process! It works perfectly in fueling my undying hatred for the slop plagiarism machine. Spite has been my singular motivator as I spend every day loathing the amount of AI covers and slop books flooding the market. AI has done what no motivational video on YouTube has managed to do: it has motivated me to sit my ass down and fucking write because I am a writer and'll be damned before I let some second hand thinker get the last laugh

Some people just want to be offended. They will seek out media about things they do not like, and so they can play the victim. I think it is so stupid.

Warning labels existed for that reason. If you don't like certain topics, don't go and look for them. If you don't like to read about incest, don't go look for an incest ship tag like sam/dean.

I really don't understand why they do this, and while there are some dark topics I don't enjoy, I don't get angry at people who write or enjoy it. It is just not for me, and I'm glad something like Ao3 exists.

And if you are reading something and suddenly a dark theme comes up, you can just stop reading and click that back button.

a friend the other day told me a good first draft trick:

pretend you hired a gremlin or elf or something none human to write your first draft as quickly as possible. And then channel that creature while you are writing it (making it sloppy and just getting the story out)

then when your going back through it, treat it like the creature just hand-delivered it to you and it’s your first time seeing the work you hired them to do

doing this has helped me write sooo much of my draft. Especially because I get to imagine I’m a gremlin

The quest step says “Get to the boat.”

Sometimes, that just means “walk down the pier, up the ramp, and hit Interact.”

But sometimes it means “crawl over the rooftops, slip into the water, swim out behind the boat, and climb onto the deck without getting seen.”

And other times it means “fight your way through infinite spawn enemies until you reach the boat.”

And every once in a while, it means “RUN!” while the world collapses around you.

Sometimes.

Sometimes “get to the boat” has you climb on, do a thing, and then get off and go to the next quest step.

Sometimes you have to talk to someone at or on the oat and make a decision.

And other times you leap out an open window into a cut seen where you slide dramatically down the sail, drop to roll across the deck, landing in a hero pose as debris crashes into the water around you and you sail off to safety.

It can help, to know what kind of game you’re playing. Sometimes.

But you never really know what to expect when the quest step says,

“Get to the boat.”

hey so. don’t do this.

“coming from a place of respect” there is nothing respectful about a comment like this. this is exactly why I say witch hunt, speculations and accusations harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.

I am not saying “you’re an asshole if you think a fic is ai”. I have come across fics that I believe were ai-generated. but instead of asking (accusing) the authors, I make my own decisions whether I’ll continue reading for the benefit of the doubt or quietly exit the fics and look for something else to read.

because with every accusation like this, there’s always a chance of a genuine, innocent writer getting wrongly accused.

last but not least, fanfic writers do NOT owe you anything. they write for themselves and their own enjoyment. their ao3 accounts are their houses and they were kind enough to let you in their houses. for free. (you get to read things for free.) you don’t go into other people’s houses and tell them “actually I think the way you decorate your room is sus. did you actually do it yourself or did you ask a robot to do it for you?”. THEY 👏🏻 DON’T 👏🏻 OWE 👏🏻 YOU 👏🏻 ANYTHING. and I say this as someone who is not a fan of ai fics. if you don’t like what you’re seeing, quietly leave.

*the following is not about the fic in this specific post. in general, I still strongly believe people who let ai write for them should tag their works as ai accordingly. but if we want more people to be honest about it, we’ll have to stop shaming and harassing people who actually tag their ai-generated fics accordingly. harassment is never justified. not to mention, it will only make “ai writers” refrain from tagging their ai-generated works as such. and then there’s no way for anyone to know for absolute certainty if it’s ai. therefore the raise of witch hunt.

Because their telepathy is in their skin, they also have a sort of telepathic map of the world around them, kinda like how blind people can feel the size of a room by air currents. So if you suppress their telepathy, they get jumpy like cats because they can’t feel where things are in relation to themselves.

writers of tumblr, what is your wildest most absurd writing advice for when you have theoretical motivation but looking at the blank document causes your brain to go numb and open another tab. not "try writing in a new environment" like the weirdest craziest things you do to force your brain into activity that you have never seen anyone else do. i know they exist and i need to try them. sincerely the most adhd riddled thing you've ever seen with a deadline

I am 100% THAT person- I will leave bitchy (sometimes nice) comments if fics aren't tagged properly.

Having my CPTSD triggered before 7am because what I thought would be a fun, quick, little read wasn't appropriately tagged really sucks.

Tags are NOT SPOILERS! They help people decide if your story is a good fit for them to read or not. I was not in the right headspace for the story I just read, and now I get to spend time trying to regulate my fucking nervous system instead of sleeping or reading something else or listening to music

Truthfully one of the most insane things to me that tumblr users have ever done is transform Dracula from a book about the Victorian scooby gang trying to defeat a vampire into a tragic time loop (which in turn makes the story even more of a gothic horror in my opinion) via the existence of Dracula Daily

Like what do you mean every single year the Harkers, the suitor squad and Van Helsing are forced to relive the worst year of their life

Sure they win in the end but over and over they are forced to loose the people they love, be striped of their personhood and fight what must have seemed like an impossible battle.

And nobody is even aware of this time loop except us and we just feed into this narrative. “Oh my friend Jonathan has just sent me another letter let’s hope this goes better than last year ;)”

And from a literary analysis standpoint this whole change is inane because it frames the book in an entirely new light. There is a meta layer of horror being applied to the book that was never possible before.

How many years will they suffer like this before someone realizes something is wrong? Before someone gets déjà vu just a few too many times?Before Jonathan and Mina realize they don’t know what their son looks like all grown up? How many years before they are free?

If you’re going to use AI in your writing, please please PLEASE mark it as AI

People who are against AI will never be your audience, and they are much more likely to not bother you about it if they can see it’s AI from the start and move along — or better yet, if they have the AI tags blocked and thus never stumble upon your writing at all

But people who are fine with reading something made by AI? They’re the people you want, and they’re the people who won’t be deterred by it. Nurture the right community for you, and everyone will be happier for it; you’ll face less antis, antis won’t read something they don’t want to read, and only people who don’t have an inherent problem with your content will see your content. What’s the benefit to pretending it’s not AI only to get people up in arms over it?

I don’t support generative AI. Would you want me engaging with your AI content? I don’t want that either, because neither of us will be happy. So we’ll meet in the middle; you let me know that the content contains AI, and I’ll leave the content be so that you can enjoy it with the people that do like it
