Hinata bounced on his toes, but he kept his lips pressed tight and his hands clasped behind his back. The last thing he wanted to do was interrupt Takeda as he finished up his work, otherwise, it would postpone everything that Hinata had worked so hard for. It hadn’t been easy keeping up with other wizards and witches who had been training from an early age, and he still had a lot to learn. But he was ravenous to learn everything he could and to venture out into the world to find what kind of niche he could fit into. Everything boiled down to this moment and, as soon as Takeda finished whatever he was working on, he would assign Hinata a familiar to help guide him.
An excited hoot reached him and Hinata grinned up at a perch above him where Koutarou was ruffling his feathers encouragingly. He was Hinata’s favorite, always pushing him harder through his encouragement. They matched each other through their energy level and positivity, and Hinata couldn’t help but hope Takeda would assign Koutarou to him.
He wasn’t the only one that Hinata would be happy to be with, however. Over by the crackling fire, Daichi’s gentle snores could be heard though his face couldn’t be seen since he was rolled up in a big furry ball. Having a bear by his side while wandering from town to town would definitely have its advantages. Mika was close by him, coiled on the stone hearth and soaking up as much heat as possible. While he wasn’t naturally fond of snakes in general, her mischievous and clever nature was never harmful to others.
“I believe I have found the spell you’re needing, Takeda-sensei,” Kei said cooly, hopping around on the massive text sprawled out on the desk. He lifted his beak haughtily. “Although the properties do heal, it is not considered a healing spell since it is more commonly used for prolonging energy, particularly in the midst of a battle.”
Takeda brightened and clapped his hands. “Good work, Kei! I never would have been able to find it without your assistance.”
“It was nothing. Honestly, I would do anything to get Hinata out of your office. He couldn’t stop moving if his life depended on it.”
Hinata narrowed his eyes at Kei and stuck his tongue out. It was difficult to decipher any expression on a crow’s face, but something gave Hinata the impression that Kei was smirking back at him. He said nothing out loud, however, as he lifted off the text and glided across the room to his favorite perch high in the rafters.
“I hope he doesn’t poop on me,” Hinata muttered under his breath...
