THEY DID THE WAVE š
reminder for all hockey fans:
netflix is making a hockey show called "the sticks" that is based on a very real tragedy that occured in canada in 2018.
the show follows a minnesota high school team after their bus crashes and coming back to hockey afterwards.
in 2018, the humboldt broncos' (a junior A team made up of 18-22 year olds) bus was hit by a tractor trailer on a highway intersection. 16 people (10 players, 2 coaches, and 4 team staff members) were killed, along with 13 other players severely injured.
the memory of the humboldt broncos crash is an incredibly sensitive subject carrying a lot of trauma to both the survivors, their families, and deceased's families. the trajectory of hockey in canada was changed significantly after this tragedy.
despite this, netflix has decided to make a show using the death of young hockey players for profit. they did not consult the survivors, nor the deceased's families. they stole a canadian story for a feel-good cash grab.
i understand wanting to watch shows about hockey, but this is not the show to watch. do not give it attention, as the humboldt broncos' memories deserve to be theirs and theirs alone to share.

sometimes rpf is like "i think they were actually fucking for real but but i can't 'prove it' so i'm going to vividly imagine it and then write it" and sometimes it's like "i know they weren't fucking but i think it would be hot so i'm going to viviidly imagine it and then write it" and sometimes it's like "i think they very well could have been fucking and if they weren't then i think they probably wanted to but for various reasons never did so i'm going to implement that theory & tension it into a beautiful story where i create a world where they can be together and fuck nasty" and i think that's beautiful

In 2018, I wrote down a passing thought in my cheap little leather-bound journal I was writing a collection of songs in that would go on to become Preacherās Daughter. āIf I finish this album the way it needs to be finished, it will change my life, and it will leave a hole in my heart for years that I wonāt know how to fill.ā Iāve always had a knack for eerily accurate self-premonition. Preacherās Daughter certainly left a hole, and it certainly changed my life, but only on the outside. All the songs I wrote for it were about characters, a girl in a āfarawayā place living her āfarawayā life, albeit still parallel to mine, but wholly detached from me. Willoughby was doomed to be closer to home. I wrote Nettles and Waco the same week, the first week I spent in the Alabama house where I would finish Preacherās Daughter after so many years of trying. The difference was I wrote them about me. There were no characters at first; it was just me. In fact, I wrote them in an attempt to hide from Ethel Cain for a moment. She eventually devoured those little ditties too, of course, as she always does. In hindsight, Iām glad I had to share them with her. I couldnāt have carried the full weight of them myself, I know that now. My premonitions were out in full force; over the course of the next few years, Iād script out my own life in the same morbid fashion I always have. Maybe it was a lesson in not training my eye downward as Iāve spent the majority of my life doing.
I had 3 weeks for the holidays between mixing and submitting Perverts and jumping back into the maw of taming an unfinished Willoughby Tucker. I spent the first three months of 2025 on probation, unable to go much of anywhere, awake only when the sun was down. Iād never mixed a record of that magnitude, which was daunting with deadlines immovable. I remember 9am on my 27th birthday rolling around after being awake for hours whittling away at mixes, announcing the album and entire tour before going back to mix an album that still wasnāt done. Iāve never cried so much finishing a record, and that was before it was even out. Combining your Saturn return, your first shot at true love, and the longest tour of your life is something I would never recommend to anyone. It was the death of both ego and everything around it. I couldnāt be more grateful. Never in my life have I been so turned inside out, so uprooted and unraveled. Looking back, I needed it more than anything.
Thank you to everyone who listened. Ethel Cain and Willoughby Tucker will always be my children, my burnt offerings, what I leave in the storm. Sometimes I wish it didnāt have to be this way, but I also fear itās the only way. Ethel Cain, Willoughby Tucker, I really will always love you. I feel as though in this moment here, saying goodbye, you and I are closer than ever. I hope you can forgive me.
Happy 1 year of the album that changed my life.
what if you said "best 98 out there" about your teammate to pester me just like old times. what if our jerseys were hung next to each other in the gym we train at. what if we go for hikes and hang out on the beach together. what if we hit each other multiple times in a game and you correct a reporter about what period i hit you in because you Remembered. what if i check in on you after a scrum and youre already waiting for me. what if you take me to a really nice restaurant in boston. what if you always smile after getting questions about me. what if i keep going to the rink despite getting shoulder surgery and watch you play.
what if we played together at a fancy academy and you pestered me the whole time and it made me work harder. what if we went to the whl together and my favourite rink to play in was yours. what if i represented our country and used your number. what if i went to your draft and stayed with you. what if you got drafted to the toronto maple leafs from a pick that used to be the blackhawks. what if i got drafted to the chicago blackhawks then weeks later you magically acquire a blackhawks cap despite the fact youre a massive canucks fan and lived through the peak of the hawks/canucks rivalry. what if we lived together in toronto and i wasnt surprised when you made the team. what if you called me a special player. what if we still trained together every summer and you stared at me the whole time despite other drills going on around you.
