Will had been watching romcoms long before he had any interest in romance himself.
When he was little, they were just another thing to watch with his mom and Grace on lazy afternoons, another collection of familiar stories where people kissed in the rain, ran through airports, and somehow always ended up happy. He liked them well enough, even if he didn't really get the point. Romance belonged in movies, somewhere in the same category as taxes and dinner parties. They were grown-up things that had nothing to do with him.
Then he turned thirteen and somewhere along the way, dating stopped sounding like a gross adult thing and started sounding kind of magical. Like cool but in a very mysterious kind of way that he didnāt fully grasp. Like as a thing the older kids whispered about at practice and bragged about in locker rooms.
So it kind of made sense, that his understanding of romance was heavily impacted by all the romcoms he had seen.Ā
And hockey, of course, because everything in his life was filtered through hockey.Ā
The two things easily blended together, when thirteen-year-old Will sat on the edge of his bed one evening, his socked feet swinging back and forth as he tried to imagine the perfect first date.
An ice rink, mostly empty except for the two of them. Soft music playing through old speakers. A girlādetails to be determined laterālaughing as she wobbled uncertainly across the ice. Sheād never really skated before, obviously, so heād take her hand, steady her, teach her how to glide, and maybe brag a little bit with how well he could stop. Maybe sheād grab onto his arm whenever she lost her balance, yes, she definitely would. And sheād shyly smile up at him.Ā
Now Will was twenty-one and as he skated toward Mack, Mack was already looking at him, grin stretched so wide across his face it made him look a little ridiculous and nobody would even for a second think there was anything shy about it. His green eyes practically sparkled, laughter already bottled up behind them. His cheeks were flushed pink and whether from the endless drills theyād been running or because Will was looking at him the way he was, it didnāt really matter. One came with the other anyway.
Will couldnāt help thinking back to his thirteen-year-old self who had been convinced heād already imagined the perfect date but now Will knew that he had been very wrong and he should have dreamed much bigger.
Reality was so, so much better.
