There was this other country, Japan, whose people had come together after years of fighting among themselves. Japan invaded Korea, but was beaten back. A few hundred years later, Japan opened to the rest of the world because this other country, the United States, forced it to. After that, Japan began to develop its military and economy very quickly. China and Korea tried to do the same thing, but didn't do it as well. Japan, because it was now strong, really wanted to become the new boss of Korea, so they attacked China and won, and became the new boss of Korea. A few years later, Korea actually became part of Japan. The Koreans were really unhappy with this, and a few years later, a man called Kim il-Sung was born. He eventually became a major fighter against the Japanese. About 30 years after Korea became part of Japan, Japan decided to invade China, At the same time, France had just been defeated by Germany in Europe, and France controlled the countries we now call Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Japan, since they were friends with Germany, invaded Vietnam and took it from the French. The United States were very unhappy with Japan for doing this and stopped selling them oil, which Japan needed to fight with China. So Japan attacked the United States. About four years after this, the United States beat Japan, and took over Japan's territory, including the Southern half of Korea. At the same time, the Soviet Union invaded the Northern half of Korea. Kim il-sung, who had fought against the Japanese, was very popular, and wanted an election for all of Korea. But the United States didn't like him, because he was a Communist, so they asked the Koreans in the South to create their own country that was friends with the United States. Kim il-Sung then created his own country in the North. A few years later, the North Korea invaded the South Korea, and almost beat them and the United States until the United States decided to counterattack. Then, the United States and South Korea almost beat the North, but China decided to help North Korea and pushed the United States and South Korea back to about the halfway point on the Korean Peninsula. Because neither side could win, they said let's stop fighting for a while, so they did, and it's been like that for the past 60 years. Unfortunately, both North and South Korea really want a whole Korea, not one that is split. But the South is very rich, while the North is very poor, and nobody likes them besides China. So now because the North is about to run out of money and food, they don't have many options left but to go to war. South Korea has promised a "strong response" to North Korean aggression, amid high tensions on the peninsula.
