Bug of the day (march 11th 2023)

The Dryocampa rubicunda or Rosy Maple Moth is a moth found in North America. The species is known for its fluffy body and pink/yellow coloration.

Males have bushier antennae which allow them to sense pheromones for mating. As the name of the species implies their main host tree is a maple tree. adult females lay their eggs on the underside of maple trees. The rosy maple moth can be found in temperate deciduous forests in North America. Bug of the day (mar 10 2023)

Bug of the day (march 9 2023)

The actias luna or Luna moth is a moth that lives in north america. Their larva eats constantly but adult Luna moths dont even have a digestive systems this is because sadly adult Luna moths only live for a week after they emerge from their cocoons. Luna moths are prey for bats for protection the moths spin the tails of their wingtips in circles this confuses the bat and gives them a chance to get away. The halmus chalybeus or its common name steelblue ladybird is apart of the Coccinellidae family. Steelblue ladybirds are native to Australia. It has a rounded appearance with an iridescent blue/green colour. Larva of ladybirds are actually bigger than their adult form being 6mm as a larva and 4mm as a adult.

They are predators because of this they were purposely introduced to New Zealand as a way to control harmful pests such as Citrus Red Mites who damage leafs. But this introduction hasnt been the best as there are many species who are not evolved to counter this kind of predator.

The Cassidinae or tortoise beetle is apart of the Chrysomelidae family. These bugs get their nickname from their domed carapace that looks like a upper shell of a tortoise. many of these beetles have the ability to turn from shiny to matte and varying colors within seconds! this happens due to the movement of fluid within the cuticle. it is unknown wether this ability is used for mating or some sort of way to avoid predators. Another cool characteristic of tortoise beetles is a "umbrella" the the larva make from feces/frass. they can also adjust the position of their "umbrella" so that it can face a predator almost acting as a shield (hence the feces it also has a stench that keeps predators away) for more info on this amazing bug please visit the link below :D

These beetles come in varying beautiful colours (my favorite being the pink leaf beetle) Most leaf beetles grow to 18mm. Leaf beetles are herbivores. Sphaerocoris annulus or its common names zulu hud bug or more commonly Picasso bug. The Picasso bug comes from the Scutelleridae family. The colours and design of this bug represent a waring to predators they also emit a odor when disturbed. These bugs are found in the grasslands of tropical Africa. they can grow to 8mm.
