Is there any precedents for a married King whose wife was not Queen Consort and had no public role? 🤔
in the 1800s maybe but I can't think of one in modern times
Princess Lilian, Princess de Rethy is an example of not being titled, but she worked well into her stepson's reign, so not a good example. If I remember correctly, that was the plan for Wallis Simpson had she been permitted to marry Edward VIII when he was King.
George IV banned Caroline of Ansbach from being crowned, but she died 3 weeks into her queenship. Caroline Matilda, wife of Christian VII was mostly isolated during her short tenure, but that's because her husband was mentaly ill.
Anne of Cleves, Jane Seymour and Catherine Howard were isolated during their marriages, but that's mostly because they were married to Henry VIII. Margaret of Valois had her marriage annuled, so she might be an example-ish but there is no precedent for this.
Queens have been iced out, crown princes have been disinherited, but there was nothing like this. During Ottoman times, consorts of sultans were iced out for various reasons, like Selim I's son Üveys pasha, who was illegitimate because his mother, an unnamed concubine, misbehaved and was thrown out of the imperial harem. Still, we are talking 1500s in these cases.
Diana, Princess of Wales, was divorced and that was a completely different scenario. I just can't see how Hakoon can ascdent as King and Mette just being there? They have to get annointed in a church and all, how can that happen now? Even if they suggest she doesn't make public apperances for the rest of her life, she will legally be Queen of Norway, unless they create a precedent and she refuses the title. I'm as lost as you are
