Supreme Court Denies Request to Revisit Same-Sex Marriage Decision

The Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request that it consider overturning its landmark decision to legalize same-sex marriage a decade ago.

The court, without comment, declined the petition, filed by Kim Davis, a former Kentucky county clerk who gained national attention in 2015 when she defied a court order and refused to issue same-sex licenses because of her religious beliefs.

She had asked the Supreme Court to reverse an order that required her to pay more than $300,000 to a couple denied a marriage license — and to overturn the same-sex marriage ruling from 2015.

[...] Mary Bonauto, the lawyer who argued the Obergefell case before the Supreme Court, praised the court’s action. “Today, millions of Americans can breathe a sigh of relief for their families, current or hoped for, because all families deserve equal rights under the law,” she said in a statement.

Ireland is coming to the end of a three year pilot of Basic Income for Artists.

2000 artists received €325 a week for three years, and every euro paid to participants resulted in society receiving €1.39 in return.

Artists’ earnings from their art increased, there were more cultural activities and events and there were, unsurprisingly, huge leaps in participants’ psychological wellbeing.

Any advice how to make friends as an adult?

Hey there, I think this is a tough one that a lot of people struggle with!

I've been lucky to have friends from childhood through college to this day but I've also made a few close friends as an adult and those have all been through two ways- work and hobbies (especially sports).

If you're working, are there people of similar mindset/you'd be interested in making friends with? If so, the easiest way I've found is to try and be a little brave and put yourself out there. It doesn't have to be anything too dramatic, just striking up a few conversations, bond first over work, then get to know them outside work. Maybe ask them if they wanna grab lunch, or, if you're lucky enough that your company organises events, that you hang out with them at one. One thing I'll say with the workplace is that it's taken patience. It's not everyone that you'll be besties with and sometimes I've been at a company quite a while with only surface level relationships with people (by choice). You might see that there are well established groups of friends already etc. In that situation it can depend on how open they seem to ve to adding to the group, whether they're your "type" of people etc. You might need to tread slowly as you have to work with them and don't wanna put yourself out there too much and regret it as you get to know them. Just something to bear in mind.

The other way is through hobbies. Can you join a team, club or group of some kind related to your interests? You could then find people who have something in common with you to hang out with, first bonding over the interest before they then become more "general" friends. Again this can take patience and I'd say tread slowly enough to begin. Sound people out, get to know them a little in the context of the group or whatever before inviting them for a coffee after practice, or to do some activity related to the hobby etc.

You can also meet friends through friends but I've done this less and I think it's more complicated and less something you can plan/anticipate so I'm not sure there's much I can say on that one!

Generally I'd say just be patient with things, the right friends will come at the right time and it can take a long time of knowing people casually to really become friends but it will be worth it. Let things develop somewhat naturally but at the same time, someone has to make the first friendship "move" so to speak. So once you've gotten to know the person even a little and you feel like they're someone you would be compatible with and are interested in being friends with, don't be afraid to be that first person to initiate a conversation, invite them somewhere etc.
