because the political establishment has displayed a craven lack of responsibility and leadership on this issue for decades now, explicitly amending the marriage act in 2004 when the UK showed signs of moving towards support for same sex marriage and offering bipartisan resistance to any liberalisation of the law even as the Australian public developed broad support for the idea, finally resulting in the absurd situation of the government refusing to recognise same sex marriage despite the prime minister claiming to support such a move even as he blocks a conscience vote due to placate a few conservative politicians who represent church groups hoping to spark a crazy traditionalist religious revival, and instead of doing his job attempts to deflect responsibility with an undemocratic survey conducted by post at enormous expense purely to assay the public mood, a mood which is already well-known, leading to months of tendentious debate over an issue already settled across the Anglosphere and now treated as an opportunity to reconsider the existence of homosexuality in society generally, turning what could be a unifying moment into an excuse for vindictive attacks that heighten unnecessary divides, and the result of the survey won’t even bind the government to any particular course of action, making it an exercise in spiteful futility in every possible way.

Why We Could Lose The Postal Survey

I don’t think it is exaggeration to say, for teenagers working out their sexuality, a denial to marriage equality would be traumatising.

hey pals! this is a really good article written by my boyfriend about how we might end up losing the plebiscite non-compulsory non-binding postal survey

for those of you who arent in australia, our country is having a ‘postal survey’ where everyone on the electoral role is being sent a non-compulsory ballot asking if same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. they have to be sent back by post. the kicker? it’s non-binding, so the government doesnt even have to go through with whatever the result says. despite reassurance from our [conservative] politicians, the campaign so far as been nasty and violent

it may seem like a depressing topic for an article, but it’s very well considered and raises some important points that we as a community need to think about whether we win this or not

A note on religious beliefs and marriage equality and how to reconcile the two:

My mother is the most stubborn person I’ve ever met. Also the most religious. She has a PhD in theology, teaches theology, and writes books about God as her sole interest. She will argue with pastors for not being theologically deep enough in their sermons. Religion is her forte. 

She also thinks gay people are immoral and isn’t scared of using the word “abomination” while referring to them. She’s not going to budge on that. To her: gay people are wrong.

BUT. She still has an argument as to why marriage equality can be a possibility without compromising religious values. To her (and to many others) God is about love. She disagrees with the very idea of gay people but doesn’t want to be cruel to them. She wants everyone to accept Jesus into their lives. That is what she deems ethically the most important thing: saving people through the word of Christ and accepting people into the church. We had a discussion once where it was apparent that perhaps being adamantly opposed to marriage equality was unhelpful towards this goal. Because when you treat people like the enemy they’re not going to see you as a loving person. She’ll never accept that being gay is anything less than a sin but she understands the utterly tactless act of denying gay people rights in helping them see her perspective. She’s still homophobic, but she has a more complex understanding than just “I don’t like the thing so no” Plus: if there’s anywhere a sinner belongs it is a church. Isn’t that the whole point of church?

It is imperative for religious groups and leaders to be on the forefront of campaigning FOR marriage equality if they are to ever be seen as anything but a hateful and oppressive force. If they truly wish for people to go to church and believe that God is loving then they must demonstrate that love - even to people they are morally opposed to. Only then will these people they disagree with be more open to religion. So to oppose marriage equality is to exclude people from the word of God and close your doors to potential congregation members. LGBT+ people are fully capable of being religious. I know many of them. I have religious LGBT+ family members. But they have to work hard to find churches that allow them to reconcile the overwhelming opposition to their existence and their desire to remain religious.

So be loving and know that voting YES doesn’t need to be a contradiction of those religious beliefs. You don’t need to accept LGBT+ people to accept that they still need to be respected and have that respect reciprocated.

I want that too. But this post is about trying to discuss ideas that are from a completely different perspective to our own to get the best possible outcome from people who will never fully be on our side. Not everyone’s going to accept us but we can at least try to argue on their level (so long as we understand it) to change their beliefs from actively harmful to less harmful. I’m sorry if I made it sound like I was uncaring towards your struggle.

also me: i hate australia because the government refuses to legalise gay marriage, our political system is highly unstable and every time we replace our leader it causes mass confusion, a coal mine is currently being planned practically on top of the great barrier reef, and any refugees who attempt to come here by boat are locked up indefinitely in offshore concentration camps with a total media blackout in place so no-one knows the extent of the human rights violations that are happening there
