🌈 Pride Portraits: Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992) Marsha P. Johnson was a drag-queen and LGBT rights advocate. She is said to be the one throwing the first glass to start the Stonewall Riot. There would be no gay rights movement without people of color. Johnson experienced a difficult childhood due to her Christian upbringing. She engaged in cross-dressing behavior at an early age but was quickly reprimanded. Johnson moved to Greenwich Village in New York City where Marsha struggled to get by. She was homeless and prostituted herself to make ends meet. However, she found joy as a drag queen amidst the nightlife of Christopher Street. Following the events at Stonewall, Johnson and her friend Sylvia Rivera co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) and they became fixtures in the community. Sadly, at the age of 46, on July 6, 1992, Johnson’s body was found in the Hudson River off the West Village Piers. The police ruled she had committed suicide despite claims from her friends and other members of the local community that she was not suicidal. 🌈Pride Portraits: Magnus Hirschfeld 1869-1935 The german-jewish physician from Kolberg studied philosophy and medicine. In his training he was traumatized by the way gay patients were treated and by their suicide rates. He dedicated his life's work to the scientific study of sexuality and set the foundation for understanding, that sexuality is not a deliberate choice. In 1987 he founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee and tried to repeal paragraph 175, which criminalized homosexuality. He opened the first sexology institute in the world where among others Lili Elbe was treated. Magnus is credited to first use the word transvestite in his work. As a jewish, gay men he was a target for the growing right-wing. A lot of his archives and books were destroyed by the Nazis and he wrote publication against the regime in exile. 🌈 Pride Portraits: Micheal Dillon 1915-1962 In 1939, he was able to get treatment from Dr George Foss, who had been experimenting with testosterone; at the time, the hormone's masculinizing effects were poorly understood.Dillon later also was the first recipient of phalloplasty by the pioneering plastic surgeon Harold Gillies. With his new name he was able to enroll in medical school. In 1946 Dillon published "Self: A Study in Endocrinology and Ethics", a book about what would now be called transsexuality. This brought him to the attention of Roberta Cowell and he performed part of her gender reassignment surgery. Homosexuality was illegal in the United Kingdom and in 1952 he was charged with "gross indecency". Following his arrest, Turing was forced to choose between temporary probation on the condition that he receive hormonal treatment or imprisonment. He chose the former, and soon underwent chemical castration. He was also barred from continuing his work in cryptography. Am I overthinking it? Maybe.
Let's be honest people who are coming of age in these times... can feel a bit paralyzed.
