i’ve only been here for about two months so i can’t speak for immigrants/foreigners who have lived here a long time, but in my experience any xenophobia i’ve encountered hasn’t been malicious. the largest complaint i’ve heard from long-term residents in japan is having japanese people respond only in broken english when you’re capable of carrying on a full conversation in japanese, or being ignored when speaking (with whoever it is you’re trying to talk to replying to your questions but speaking exclusively to a japanese person in your group). it can be kind of annoying when people speak english to me like that, but i know they just want to take the opportunity practice or make me feel comfortable/welcome. usually i just respond to everything they say in japanese and sometimes they get the hint that that’s what i would prefer, but other times they don’t (usually this is the case when they just really want to practice english). idk foreigners are super exoticized and they stick out, so sometimes i get questions that i feel are a little inappropriate but i know they’re coming from a very different cultural context. for example, my black friends here have their skin commented on a lot, like “WOW YOUR SKIN IS PITCH BLACK!” which in japan doesn’t hold any negative associations, but reads very differently to americans. in any case, when i meet new people they’re usually pretty interested in me and want to know why i’m in japan, what i like about it, what my home is like, etc. and thus far the attention has been welcome. my friends and i have had a lot of great experiences with ojisans and obasans at restaurants buying us food and carrying on conversations with us too, but i can see how after a while being treated as a spectacle could become tiresome. i’m also in osaka which has a reputation for being a lot more relaxed socially, so that might be affecting the way i’m treated here. it might be different in tokyo/the countryside, etc. hope this was helpful??
