Iâd like to report that AFTER the survey closed, my roommates adopted some new rescue chickens and made the mistake of letting me name them, so now we have Lestat (leghorn, the bravest one, biggest comb,) Louis (rhode island red, kind of shy but always with Lestat,) Armand (gold sebright bantam, the prettiest chicken you will ever see in the entire world,) and Akasha (i donât know what kind of chicken she is but she is big and fluffy and kind of aggro.) They are all settling in nicely with the other chickens and starting to lay eggs. Thanks a ton for putting the survey together!

I'm not even going anon for this cuz some asks I saw were silly and I stand behind this post.. I'm a huge fan of Anne and Chronicles for 25 yrs now! love the show but primarily love BOOKS! haven't voted in what ever big poll you had here but if I was I would 100% vote for Armand.. book Armand first and foremost! as much as I love Lestat so much⊠Armand is my fave! and I know many others would vote for Armand too, met countless people over the years who named him as fave. To say he is "not as popular in any world" is deluded. I don't know why my (would be) vote would be considered "bombing" by some people complaining here, but their vote is somehow more correct and valid? doesn't mean we don't love other characters too. I love them all in their own way. sounds like some people are just whiny and immature and calling it "ruined" because they didn't like the result and are salty lol. chill it doesn't change YOUR fave or impacts you in any way. ppl can have different opinion to you and we can all still enjoy the books as a whole.

I do want to use this ask to clarify why I was a bit annoyed at the silly ask I got about Armand, and to go into my methodology a tiny bit: it would have been very time consuming and also basically impossible to actually bomb the poll. I spot checked many entire responses for reasonableness, often people would share the survey after I just got a response that was very obviously them, and I was generally really on the lookout for anyone answering in bad faith. There were also a lot of questions on the survey, it wasn't a single poll: you would have had to create multiple different personas and answer 20+ questions to have voted more than once.
And finally, no one is getting any cred off this survey, because it wasn't made to prove anything: it was made to, best as possible, try to capture a snapshot of people in the fandom in a moment of time, without an agenda other than to gather something from everyone, for everyone.
And to convince people that the margin of difference between the first and second favorite characters is closer than it really is, using my secret underground Parisian cult of vampiric satanists to twist the results of the poll. Obviously.
Damn, was Louis popular in anything? I knew Lestat, Armand and Marius are more popular for book fans and some tv show fans but whereâs Louisâs fans?
I saw this question a few times! For what it's worth from me, Louis is one of a couple of characters who I think was eclipsed by another popular character he "goes with" in the survey results. In other words, I think Louis would probably grab a much higher portion of the vote in a question about second favorite characters- most likely paired with people who voted for Lestat or a much more minor character as their favorite. Louis is half of the most popular pairing, after all! He and his book were also more popular among the demographic that also tended to favor Lestat or more minor characters, so that's my theory.
Also, I'm going to say a lot of fans of the show, when asked who their favorite was in a poll about the books, thought of Louis from the books in their voting behavior. Proportionally, Louis is a more major character in "Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire" (so far) than in "The Vampire Chronicles." If you're a fan of Louis as portrayed by Jacob Anderson, you're a fan of the protagonist of a two season television show. If you're a fan of Louis from the books, you're a fan of the narrator of 1 out of 15 books- the first book! One of people's favorite books! But the amount of focus is different, and there are a lot of changes in the adaptation between the two mediums.
The poll was for all fans of this series, so if you are a Louis fan, aren't a Louis fan, are a fan of dusty Louis, chiffon skirt picking out Louis, scythe Louis, machete Louis, born 1766 Louis, or born 1877 Louis, or are just like me and think the weird detail about him standing in the rain outside a video store to watch Romeo + Juliet in The Vampire Armand was hilarious, thank you for participating in and/or enjoying the survey!
The Vampire Lestat: Unofficial 2025 Fandom Survey Highlights!
Because of the SDCC panel and news yesterday about the upcoming third season of the AMC show, I thought it would be interesting to highlight some of the results of the survey of fans of The Vampire Chronicles that were specifically related to the book The Vampire Lestat:
96.49% of respondents had read and completed the book. Everyone who didn't finish the book had at least read part of it (3.51% of respondents).
8.07% of respondents started reading the series with this book, putting it in second place to the first book in the series, Interview with the Vampire. People who got into the series more recently were more likely to have started with TVL than other groups of fans.
38.76% of respondents chose The Vampire Lestat as their favorite book in the series. Another 25.10% chose it as their second favorite, meaning 63.86% of respondents picked it as one of their favorites.
Of people who chose Lestat as their favorite character, 67.65% responded that this was their favorite book, and 20.59% responded it was their second favorite. 88.24% of respondents who gave Lestat as their favorite character chose this book as their favorite or second favorite.
Of people who chose Armand as their favorite character, 21.82% responded that this was their favorite book, and 22.42% responded it was their second favorite book. This was the second most popular favorite and second favorite book among Armand fans, and was chosen as one or the other by 44.24% of these respondents.
Out of the top characters people responded were their favorite, 4 were introduced in and had major roles in the book The Vampire Lestat. The most popular character introduced in this book was Marius, the favorite of 5.04% of respondents and in 4th place overall, followed by Gabrielle (2.42%, 7th), Nicolas (1.61%, 8th), and Akasha (0.60%, 13th).
The most popular pairing between characters who interact on the page in The Vampire Lestat is Lestat and Louis, who were also first overall with 38.40% of the votes. The second most popular pairing meeting that definition was Armand and Lestat, the 3rd most popular with 7.38% of the votes overall.

As the results have been going around, I've been gathering a few questions I've gotten or seen people discussing, and here are the answers for anyone curious (or anyone wondering later):
What does the survey represent?
The survey represents the population that answered the survey, in other words, mostly Tumblr and Reddit users (+discord and bluesky) active in the subreddits and tags for these books in June 2025. There's no way to capture an entire fandom or even define what a fandom is, so the survey only is able to be what it is! You could call it a snapshot, and what kind of people were in that snapshot are summarized in part one of the results.
Are the opinion answers about the books or the show?
The phrasing of the Favorite Character and Favorite Pairing questions pointed at the books, but obviously, some people's favorites are influenced by the show, and some people's favorites are because of the show specifically. I specified which pairings were specifically show or books, for characters it was very rare that anyone specified one or the other. It was more common, if people mentioned different versions of characters, for people to mention liking their favorite character in the show as well, or their favorite changing since watching the show.
How was the survey done?
Survey itself was in Google Forms, all the number crunching and data manipulation was in Microsoft Excel with a heavy dose of Power Query (which you might be familiar with as Power BI).
What do I need to do if I want to do a survey like this?
My biggest recommendations to anyone doing something similar is to 1. Check how the answers are output as data on your survey platform and see if that is data you are comfortable working with, 2. Choose any answers that are going to be manually typed, understanding your own level of comfort with the additional work required for that data, and 3. Act in good faith, so people feel comfortable that you're handling their data responsibly.
Damn I didn't expect such a response to my ask, guess I struck a nerve. And the response kind of proves my point so that's cool.
I didn't say Armand's not popular, just nowhere near as popular as Lestat. That's a fact. Lestat is the most popular in the fandom(casuals and hardcore) as a whole by a wide margin, if Armand in any given poll is anywhere near, it means it's been bombed by Armand's fans.
There's another survey with more than double your respondents, Armand was 4th by a small margin, and Lestat had more votes than the next five characters combined. You're telling me now that we're supposed to believe that Lestat is only slightly more popular than Armand?
Look up kpop and poll bombing.
Kpop fans have the biggest subset of psychos in the world, so for Armand fans to be exhibiting the same behaviors leads me to believe they are psychos too. Lying and gaslighting about other characters is happening as we speak. Caveat by saying that I don't mean all, but Armand has a bigger portion compared to other characters.
Coming from a kpop fandom, this behavior is so prevalent that it's not worth talking about. In fact they're proud when they successfully bomb a poll. So I thought I was just pointing out the obvious, but it's still a shame for you if you're trying to do serious field research.

anyway I don't think appealing to your deep knowledge of k-pop fandom infighting really supports your point about the fans who disagree with you (about the correct margin by which the second favorite character was in second, by the way, should I remind you) being the real problem, but you do, you I guess.
I love nothing more than fandom and early internet history, and looking at the results of the survey is so fascinating, especially as a newer fan/survey respondent. Reading the anecdotal replies, and seeing how when you found the series impacts what part is your favorite is especially interesting to me! Thanks for compiling this.

Honestly it's a shame you put all that effort into something that was bombed by Armand fans. It's not representative, in no world is Armand almost as popular as Lestat. ...Armand has a higher proportion of psycho fans(befitting of the character) so it's no surprise they move like k-pop stans.
I don't know man, I think people just voted for a character they like, who's in a large number of the books, has his own POV book, and was such a fan favorite that the author decided to bring him back from the dead after originally killing him off because of the fan response. But if a survey of 513 people won't convince you he's popular, I imagine nothing will.
Pretty funny to imagine Armand rigging an election in his favor and still losing to Lestat though.
The Vampire Chronicles Unofficial Fandom Survey: Results Part 6, Impact of Fandom and Fan Stories
The results of The Vampire Chronicles Unofficial Fandom Survey have been broken up into six parts. Click HERE to see a masterpost with links to all parts, and downloadable and screen reader optimized versions of the results.
The survey included the question: âIs there something cool or interesting about your time in the fandom you'd like to share?â 126 people gave responses, most of them very detailed, and many of them very meaningful. Because of the number of responses, Iâm going to summarize trends in the answers as best I can, while giving a few examples of specific answers that stood out, which may be trimmed for length.
Whether or not your specific answer is below, thank you to everyone who wrote something! There is no way I can include every single answer that either made me smile or made me emotional, because Iâm lucky to say there were too many of them.
Impact of the Books or Fandom on Respondents
Far and away, the most common theme was how much people valued the friendships they made through the fandom:
âI met most of the important people in my life directly or indirectly thanks to TVCâ
âI'm still Internet friends with people I met on an Anne Rice forum 25 years agoâ
âI joined the fandom by watching, then befriending a fandom member and content creator on TikTok, then a year later we met in person to explore the AMC IWTV TV show filming locations in Prague. Joining this fandom made me come out of my introverted shell and travel abroad for the first time on my own.â
âThis book series has formed me and made me into the person I am today. I will never forget my adventure in San Francisco that I went on because of TVC, and I adore the community I have gained because of the AMC adaptation.â
Thirteen responses indicated that they met their current or former partner or spouse because of The Vampire Chronicles:

People have named the following after characters from the series:
Cats named Armand (orange), Louis (two different cats, one female), Lestat (two different cats, one peed everywhere, accurate to The Tale of the Body Thief, as pointed out by the respondent), Nicky (spelled that way on purpose), and Santino.
A snake named Claudia.
Plants named Armand (Red Rose), David (Calla Lily), Lestat (Sunset Rose), and Louis (White Rose).
Two different people named their human sons Louis, one apparently unconsciously and only realizing they originally got the name from the books while watching the AMC adaptation.
One person chose their confirmation name based on the books, Claudia.
One person responded that they are named after a character from the books, but they did not provide their name.

Three people mentioned the books or an adaptation making them interested in learning or going further with the French language, including one person who is choosing their college major because of their interest in French originally inspired by Lestat.

âI've learnt a lot about myself over the years reading The Vampire Chronicles (I re-read them from time to time), and it's always surprising to discover new perspectives with every re-read even after 10 years of being a fan of the books. They made me realize psychology is interesting, and later I became a psychologist.â
Several responses were about how the books helped someone accept something about their identity or interests:

âOne thing I love about Anne's writing is the way she fills it with details from her own interests and research - fiction, philosophy, art, history etc. Getting involved in the fandom has spurred me to widen my own interests and learn a lot that I would probably have otherwise lacked the focus for. It's been very enriching.â
âReading some of Anne Rice's books helped me understand my sexuality and proclivities for BDSM, back in a time when these things were not commonly discussed or advertised. I'm really happy they enhanced those elements for the 2022 adaptation.â
âThe 1994 movie played a great role in understanding my sexualityâ
âThis series gave queer kids from the 80s and 90s vocabulary, insights, and community. It's so many years later, and things are so much different from a queer girl growing up in a country where lgbtq+ was still against the law, but do not underestimate how much this series legitimized and made public, social space for queer people. That 1994 adaptation, as low key queer coded as it is (compared to the series), helped change society on a global scale (the director is Irish, hence why it gained headway here, in what was still a very Catholic country (condoms were just legalized, but divorce was illegal at the time.) Anne changed the Western world.â
âI was recommended this series at an odd time in my life. I sometimes wonder if it was an awkward attempt from the adults in my life to pull a "gay is okay" without having the conversation, because the queer themes are so overt. I did not finish the books in their entirety at the time because my life was very unsteady, but I revisited them when the amc series was coming out because I wanted to know what was being adapted. I now appreciate the gesture for what it was.â
âThis show has helped me a ton with accepting myself as a bisexual man. Lestat, in that regard, could be seen as an example/icon/someone to look up to.â
âLestat saved my life. I was a child with low self-esteem and I saw myself in him: his terrible relationship with his father, his undying love for his mother, even his curly hair and blue eyes. He breathed life into me again and put me on the road that led me to accept myself and my feelings.â
âI was 13 when I first started the Chronicles. An extremely formative time for anyone. Anne felt like a parent in a way, always discussing morality and right and wrong. She understood the male mind better than any woman I ever knew. I miss her very much.â
The History of the Fandom and Thoughts About How It Has Changed
Several responses mentioned or went into detail about the period of time in the fandom after Anne Riceâs legal team sent cease and desist letters to fanfiction authors and sites hosting fanfiction, notably causing fanfiction based on her works to be banned from fanfiction.net in 2001:
âI remember reading fanfic online before Anne took it all away.â
âI have read fan fiction but never written any of it, but my departed boyfriend did who was also a fan. We were in high school when she went after fan fiction writers. He received legal threats. I love her work and respect her as an artist but will never forgive her for that.â
âI remember being a member of a roleplaying forum some time in the early 00's (maybe late 90's?) where you signed up as you and could interact with people rping as the various vampires. It was a lot of fun but they ended up being forced to change the whole basis of the forum because of Anne's vendetta against fanfiction at the time.â
âI remember when there were geocities just of individual spec fic authors that were just of vampire chronicles. I was in a group wherein we shared these to archive them in what became The Forbidden Archive.â
âOffhand, but I remember posting a couple very short fanfics on ff.net circa 2002/2003 and receiving an email asking if they could be added to a "secret archive" due to the whole takedown situation. I said yes, and I know they were added to the archive eventually, but it was still surreal and strangely surreptitious. (Also, those fics were written by a 14-year-old ESOL, why in heaven's name anyone wanted them, I have no idea.)â
âI remember years ago (2009?) being interested in the fandom and wanting to write fic based on the 90s movie but when I found out FF.net didnât allow fanfic of her characters I abandoned the fandom entirely and switched to Twilightâ
âI participated as a teen in the early 2000s before the FFnet purge and then stepped away for a long time. I got back in by joining tumblr fandom in 2016 and it revived my love of fanfiction that had been long dormant and is now a huge part of my life!â
âI read the books at age 15 in 1994 after seeing the film in the cinema, and was heavily in the fandom until the early 2000s, when a combo of Anneâs fan doxxing/the terrible QOTD film/Blood Canticle pushed me out of the fandom for twenty years. Having followed the QOTD filming and been betrayed by how bad it was, I had very low expectations of the show but was BLOWN AWAY by the pilot on release day.â
Some newer fans wrote about their feelings on the history of the fandom or about being new to it:
âThe fandom is so creative and wonderful, and I understand it was a different environment back in the day, worse for fic writers but also RIP to Anne, I have heard that she was overall very giving to her fans and it was a blessing to be in the fandom before she passedâ
âIt's definitely a very interesting fandom! I love going back through fandom history and witnessing all the cool little developments in how we talk about these books, both before and after the show.â
âI think what originally prompted me to read Interview was becoming aware of a published author who had started as a Loustat fic author in the 90s. I love researching the history of fandom culture and the history of genre publishing and tracing the evolution of popular tropes. I wanted to find out why Loustat was such a popular pairing that had held fansâ passion for decades, and led to infamous fandom controversies like Riceâs hatred of fanfic and âinterrogating the text from the wrong perspective.â ⊠When I read Interview, I loved it and I was shocked by how literary it was (the themes! the prose!) and how much different and better it was, compared to the way people outside the fandom (misogynists, queerphobes, people who hate genre fiction) talk about it to condescend to Anne Rice/Vampire fans (that itâs just about gay vampires with no deeper themes, it glamourizes abusive relationships, itâs irredeemably racist etc). I was so compelled I had to read all of them.â
âI had watched the old movie on repeat growing up and know it practically by heart. Somehow never got to the books but when I heard about the new adaptation I jumped in. The new show also stars Jacob Anderson who i was already a HUGE fan of his music. He's like my favorite for real so I was thrilled he was going to be Louis. To be contrary apparently, I devoured the Mayfair Witches series before tackling the Vampire Chronicles. I love every single book of the Vampire Chronicles. I love the ending and how deep Anne goes with the story. The detail and history knowledge of her beautiful fictional world is something I will treasure forever.â
âI plan to visit New Orleans to see what the places in the books and the movie (1994) look like. I want to see what inspired Anne Rice to choose this location and also feel closer to her. âA part of the fandom and of the TVC universe will stay in my heart forever. However, since the series came out, I feel like things are changing and the fandom topics, way of thinking, aesthetic etc. donât match anymore with what I am looking for and for what made me come here in the first place. I am no longer an active user as I was before and a part of me feels sad for it. I have great memories of it though.â
âItâs all about the show now, that is very very different from the books imo. But that being said, it was in a way a good thing that they came bc I feel like Anne Rice and her works have been brought to the spotlight again, and itâs in a way nice that more people are fans now.â

Stories About Anne Rice
âI got to do an interview with the vampire themed tour of New Orleans back in the 90s, including visiting Anne Rice's then home and I got to pet her dog Mojo (and have pics!)â
âAnne did a book tour when Tale of the Body Thief came out that had stops in Canada. This was around the time casting news for the upcoming Interview with the Vampire movie had been announced, and right after she had publicly said she did not think Tom Cruise was right for Lestat. I stood in front of her, my nervous teen self, and summoned up the courage to tell her I agreed with her: He wasn't right. She nodded, finished signing, and off I went. ...And then two weeks later, she told the world that she'd changed her mind. My teen self felt a fool, but as an adult, I just look back and laugh.â
âI used to walk by Anne Rice's house in the Garden District when I briefly lived in New Orleans circa 1999/2000. It was beautiful and spooky. I always wanted to run into her but never did. We lived very close, on St. Charles.â
âWhen I was on vacation in New Orleans 20+ years ago, I visited the First Street house to take pictures. While I was there a limo pulled up and after a few minutes Anne Rice exited the house and walked to the car! That's the closest I ever got to meeting her.â
âI had the honor and privilege of interviewing Anne Rice one-on-one during my time writing for the horror website Dread Central.â
âI interviewed Anne twice, via email. She was an engaging and generous interviewee, and despite the amount of PR she must've had to do, she came off as enjoying the experience. The occasions were the release of Of Love And Evil, and the 20th anniversary of the IWTV movieâ
Additional Stories and Anecdotes
âI got to see the Lestat musical on Broadway while it was in previews, and, relatedly, I've also claimed that Lestat is the reason I once quit my job. (My retail job wouldn't give me the night off to attend the show, so I quit so I'd be able to attend. No regrets, it was a shitty job anyway, thanks Lestat!)â
âI once found a copy of TVA in a used bookstore that had a dedication written on the first page that said "To Lestat - Because beauty is forever. Armand". Also inside the book was a yellowed pencil drawing of a bench in what looked like Jackson Square.â
âI remember dressing up as Anne to give a presentation to my class in 10th grade! I was a baby lesbian goth in rural North Carolina, and her books were the easiest to find queer-leaning horror to fill my soul.â
âI have adapted every single name/place/event in The Vampire Chronicles in order to make it *culturally* Turkish. We've decided this with my other Turkish friends (who are fans of IWTV). The survey data was broken into a few different demographic groups to analyze whether fandom behavior and opinions were different across different groups of fans.
Fan Demographics (Generations)
Looking at the survey response data, I realized it would be most illustrative to break up the responses into demographics based on when people first got into the books. Based on the population of responses, I made the following subgroups:
Early Adopters
This group includes any response that indicated that the responder read their first book in the series in 1993 or earlier.
These fans would have first read the series any time between the release of Interview with the Vampire and the release of the 1994 movie by Neil Jordan.
This time period includes the releases of the books Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, The Witching Hour, and Lasher.
This is the smallest group, with 56 respondents.
This group has an average birth year of 1973 and an approximate average current age of 52. The average year they first read the books was 1989, and the average age they were first reading the books was 17.
They have on average read the second most books in the series out of any group, 9.77.
Movie Wave
This group includes any response that indicated that the responder read their first book in the series any year from 1994 to 2004.
These fans would have first read the series any time between the release of the 1994 movie by Neil Jordan and one year after the release of Blood Canticle, originally intended to be the final book in the series.
This time period includes the releases of the movies Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned, and of the books Taltos, Memnoch the Devil, Pandora, The Vampire Armand, Vittorio the Vampire, Merrick, Blood and Gold, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle.
This is the second smallest group, with 146 respondents
This group has an average birth year of 1985 and an approximate average current age of 40. The average year they first read the books was 1999, and the average age they were first reading the books was 14, the youngest of any group.
They have on average read the most books in the series out of any group, 9.83.
Quiet Period
This group includes any response that indicated that the responder read their first book in the series any year from 2005 to 2020
These fans would have first read the series any time between two years after the release of Blood Canticle until just around the announcement of AMC Network's purchase of the television rights to The Vampire Chronicles.
This time period includes the run of the musical Lestat, and the publication of Prince Lestat, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, and Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat.
This is the largest group, with 156 respondents.
This group has an average birth year of 1995 and an approximate average current age of 30. The average year they first read the books was 2012, and the average age they were first reading the books was 16.
They have on average read the second smallest number of books in the series out of any group, 8.38.
AMC Resurgence
This group includes any response that indicated that the responder read their first book in the series from 2021 until the present (summer 2025)
These fans would have first read the series at any point from when the original marketing and casting announcements for the television adaptation were announced, until the present day
This time period includes the release of seasons one and two of AMCâs Anne Riceâs Interview with the Vampire, and seasons one and two of AMCâs Mayfair Witches. At the time of this survey, the first season of Talamasca has not premiered, and the third season of Interview with the Vampire is currently in production.
This is the second largest group, with 155 responses.
This group has an average birth year of 1999 and an approximate average current age of 25. The average year they first read the books was 2023, and the average age they were first reading the books was 25, by far the oldest of any group.
They have on average read the least books in the series out of any group, 6.23 (to be fair, theyâve also only had four years to catch up so far!)

Both the âMovie Waveâ and the âQuiet Periodâ were most likely to have discovered the books from the 1994 film adaptation.
âAMC Resurgenceâ was most likely to have discovered the book from the AMC television adaptation, but also were the group most likely to have started to read the books in anticipation of watching an adaptation.
âMovie Waveâ was the most likely group to have started with any book other than Interview with the Vampire, but âAMC Resurgenceâ was the most likely group to have started specifically with The Vampire Lestat if not with the first book in the series
Opinions and Hot Takes by Fan Demographics
Favorite books in the series, by percentage, significantly varied between each demographic, though the top three most popular books maintain the same ranking among each demographic.
Early Adopters were the most likely to choose Memnoch the Devil as their favorite, and the least likely to choose a book that was not one of the first three books in the series as their favorite or second favorite.
Quiet Period is the group with the most variety in their answers for favorite, and also the group most likely to have chosen one of the first three books in the series as their second favorite.
Movie Wave was the most likely to choose The Vampire Armand as their favorite book in the series, and to choose either The Tale of the Body Thief or Blood and Gold as their second favorite.
AMC Resurgence had the most responses for a single answer for favorite, The Vampire Lestat, but was also the group most likely to have chosen Blood and Gold as their favorite, and the least likely to have chosen Interview with the Vampire. For second favorite, they were the most likely to choose The Vampire Armand or Queen of the Damned.
Lestat is more popular among people who were introduced to the books earlier, and slightly less popular with each group that was introduced to the books later.
The only demographic that did not have Lestat as the most popular choice for favorite is the AMC Resurgence, where he is second to Armand. Armand is less popular with readers who were introduced to the books earlier, and more popular with readers who were introduced to the books more recently.
The following characters are more popular with groups introduced to the books early than with those introduced to the books recently: Louis, Marius, Gabrielle, and Quinn.
The following characters are more popular with groups introduced to the books recently than to those introduced to the books earlier: Claudia, Daniel, and Nicolas.
Louis and Lestat are the most popular pairing among all demographics.
Armand and Daniel are the second most popular for all demographics, and have dramatically increased in popularity among more recent fans
Armand and Louis, Marius and Pandora, and Armand and Marius are more popular among the Movie Wave than with any other demographic.
The popularity of David and Lestat has decreased over time.
To compare opinions on adaptations, I assigned each answer a value 0-3, with âI do not like itâ at 0, and âI love itâ at 3. I averaged together each groupâs answers, and then divided by 3, and multiplied by 100. This gives each groupâs opinions on each adaptation a âscoreâ out of 100.
The group most likely to have not liked or had issues with Interview with the Vampire 1994 was the AMC resurgence, the Early Adopters being the second most likely. The Movie Wave group is the most uniformly positive about the movie, with not a single respondent in that group answering, âI do not like it.â
The most popular answer for all but one group for Queen of the Damned 2002 was âIt's fine but I have issues with it/it's not for me.â The one group that is an outlier is the Movie Wave group, who answered âI do not like itâ about this movie significantly more than any other group.
The Movie Wave and Quiet Period fans were the most likely to not have liked or loved the 2022 AMC Television adaptation, though more than 70% of both groups responded that they liked or loved it. The Early Adopters were the most likely to love or like the AMC Television adaptation, with 87.27% giving one of those two responses.
The AMC Resurgence group had the most unified opinion of any group, with 81.29% of respondents indicating they love the AMC adaptation. The opinions of the remaining respondents are fairly evenly distributed across all other possible answers.
Lestat Fans v. Armand Fans
Because so many respondents answered either Lestat or Armand as their favorite character, I looked to see if there was any difference between these two groups, and though they were not materially different in some ways, here are a few places the two groups differed:
Armand fans had an average birth year of 1993, where Lestat fans had an average birth year of 1989. Both groups on average found the books at about 18/19, the average year first read the books for Armand fans was 2012, and for Lestat fans it was 2007.
Armand fans were much more likely to have chosen The Vampire Armand (39.18% of the group)or The Queen of the Damned (22.22% of the group)as their favorite books than Lestat fans. Lestat fans overwhelmingly chose The Vampire Lestat as their favorite book in the series (68.18% of the group.)
For their second favorite book in the series, Lestat fans were much more likely to choose Interview with the Vampire or The Tale of the Body Thief than Armand fans. Armand fans were slightly more likely to choose Pandora or Blood and Gold as their second favorite than Lestat fans, and much more likely to choose The Vampire Armand as their second favorite.
Lestat fans were slightly more likely to have a positive opinion of the 1994 Interview with the Vampire than Armand fans, but otherwise opinions about adaptations were similar between the two groups.
Both groups were much more likely to have a favorite ship involving their favorite character. Armand fans were slightly more likely to have chosen âArmand and Lestatâ as their favorite pairing than Lestat fans were. (This makes perfect sense, as I believe Armand would also be much more likely to have chosen that as his favorite pairing than Lestat.)

The survey asked respondents to give their opinions on a few things about the series. As these were optional, the percentages provided here are out of all respondents who answered the question, not out of all respondents in the survey. As many of these answers had a free form field to manually type in an answer, I have also provided some notes about how those were grouped.
Favorite Books
The book the most respondents indicated was their favorite was The Vampire Lestat, with 193 (38.76%) votes. The Queen of the Damned came in second with 93 (18.67%) votes, and Interview with the Vampire was third with 75 (15.06%), only one more vote than fourth, The Vampire Armand with 74 (14.86%)
The books people responded were their second favorite ranked the same as first place, with The Vampire Lestat first with 121 (25.10%) votes, The Queen of the Damned with 97 (20.12%) votes, Interview with the Vampire with 78 (16.18%) votes, and The Vampire Armand with 61 (12.66%).
The most common combinations of favorite and second favorite books were Favorite: The Vampire Lestat and Second Favorite: The Queen of the Damned with 57 (11.45%) answers, and Favorite: The Vampire Lestat and Second Favorite: Interview with the Vampire with 53 (10.64%) answers.
89.36% of respondents who gave their favorite and/or second favorite book responded that one of the first three books in the series was their first or second favorite.
Among respondents who did not give one of the first three books in the series as their first or second favorite, the most common combination of first and second favorite books were The Vampire Armand and Blood and Gold, with 12 votes (plus 4 votes with Blood and Gold as the favorite and The Vampire Armand as the second favorite.)
The books that were chosen as favorite or second favorite the least were Vittorio, the Vampire and Merrick (each with one vote for favorite, two for second favorite), and Blood Canticle (one vote for favorite, one vote for second favorite).
Each book in the Prince Lestat trilogy (Prince Lestat, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, and Blood Communion) was significantly more likely to be selected as a personâs second favorite than as their favorite. Blood and Gold was twice as common as a second favorite book than as a favorite book.

Favorite Character
The survey asked respondents to name their favorite character, and to give no more than two if they couldnât decide. 497 people responded, 40 people gave more than one answer, 17 of those people answered Lestat and also another character, 11 responded Armand and another character, and 9 responded both Lestat and Armand.
Because these were freeform responses I simplified down, for fun, here are a few observations about how people actually wrote their favorite character:
Lestat got called âa basic answerâ by three people, and âthe obvious answerâ by at least three others. We got two âLestat, Lestat, Lestat, Lestat, Lestatâ s.
Armand got called a ânaughty kitten,â âthat messy bitch,â and âmy darling.â
An answer that made me laugh was âOh nooooooooo! (Marius)â
The actual phrasing of the answer summarized as âNone, they are all insaneâ is âNone, they are all insane in their own way and thatâs okâ
Favorite Pairing
The survey asked respondents for their favorite pairing, and it was optional whether or not to specify if the pairing was romantic or platonic. If multiple responses were given in one answer, I simplified it down to the least popular of the two pairings given (ex: If someone responded, âDevilâs Minion or Marimand,â they counted as âMarimandâ here).
Because the way a pairing is written colloquially to indicate whether it is specifically a romantic pairing may have changed over time or may be different in different fandom spaces, I've standardized the responses into the following categories:
Specified Romantic or Specified Platonic: wrote one of those two words in their answer
Assumed Romantic: the character's names were separated with a "/", "x", or "+"
Under a Ship Name: Indicated a pairing by a common ship name (ex. Loustat, Devil's Minion, Marimand, etc.)
Not Specified: character's names were separated by a "&" or "and"
Specified Book, Specified Movie, or Specified Show: contextually some pairings are likely specifically referring to the television show, but this category is only assigned if the answer indicated the name of an actor, made an obvious reference to an adaptation (ex. "Old Daniel"), or said that they meant a version from a specific version.
Like with characters, because this was a freeform field, here are some observations about how people presented their answers:
Louis and Lestat: one person wished âHappy Pride to these two and their bs!â
Someone responded âLestat/Rowan, and I know Iâm the only oneâ the same day someone else responded almost the exact same thing.
Lestat and Armand did genuinely have two people specify that, rather than platonic or romantic, they liked (paraphrasing), âwhatever those two have going on, enemies, lovers, anything.â
My favorite answer was: âIsnât Lestat the type O amongst vampires? He goes with whomever the story requires.â

The survey included a list of questions about what people do in fandom, where they engage with other fans, and whether they took part in specific activities or identified with specific statements.
Fandom Questions
Freeform answers (where people selected âotherâ and wrote their own responses) are grouped together, and those results are shown with an asterisk (*). Because these were optional additional answers offered, it is likely that more of the total respondents would have given this answer if it was a choice than chose to manually type it.
255 (49.71%) respondents participated in at least one of the listed activities related to the book series or its adaptations, with the most common activity being purchasing merchandise related to an adaptation with 130 (25.34%) responses, followed by visiting locations featured in the book series, with 109 (21.25%) responses.
304 (59.26%) respondents had created some kind of fan work, the most common being type being fanfiction (or spec, as it was commonly called in the late 90âs) with 209 (40.74%) responses.
Out of the fandom spaces listed as options, the most common answer was that people interacted with fandom on a blogging platform (Tumblr, LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, Etc), with 408 (79.53%) of respondents selecting this option.
Along with someone actually naming The Forbidden Archive as a place they have engaged with fandom, someone else answered that they used to use a fanfiction website that they couldnât remember the name of that met The Forbidden Archiveâs description- so if youâre the person who answered that, thatâs what that website is called!
Out of the statements respondents were asked to say whether or not they identified with, âThe release of a new adaptation caused me to become interested in the series/fandom after having been less active or interestedâ was the most answered with 235 (45.81%) responses.

Which book did you read first?
The majority of respondents began reading the series with Interview with the Vampire. Among people who started with another book, the most common other first book read in the series was The Vampire Lestat.
Which Books Have You Read?
The average number of books in The Vampire Chronicles and The New Tales of the Vampires read by respondents was 8.29, the median was 8. 16 responses (3.12%) were from people who had only read one book, 83 (16.18%) were from people who had read all fifteen books.
The book read by most respondents was Interview with the Vampire, with 497 respondents having finished it, and 9 having read at least part of it.
The book completed by the fewest respondents was Vittorio the Vampire, with Blood Canticle being the second least read.
225 (43.85%) respondents had either read a book only in part or not finished at least one book in the series. The book the most people responded they had either started to read and not finished or had only read sections from was The Vampire Armand.
331 (64.52%) respondents said they were planning to read more or all of the remaining books in the series that they had not read, 95 (18.52%) respondents said they were undecided or did not plan to read any more books in the series. 87 (16.96%) respondents said they had read all the books in the series (and had read at least 13).

On average, survey respondents had seen 3.64 of the film, stage, or television adaptations, read 2 books by Anne Rice that were not part of The Vampire Chronicles or The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, had read 0.72 comic book adaptations, and read 1.22 of the supplementary materials or biographies listed.
254 (49.51%) respondents read at least one other book by Anne Rice, the most read non-TVC related novel was The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned, and the second was The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty.
168 (32.74%) respondents read at least one comic adaptation; the most read comic was Interview with the Vampire: Claudiaâs Story by Ashley Marie Witter.
509 (99.22%) respondents had seen at least one adaptation, and the most seen adaptation was 1994âs Interview with the Vampire directed by Neil Jordan.

Based on the birth year and the year people started reading the books, the youngest people were when they started reading the books was approximately nine years old, the oldest anyone responded they were initially reading the books was approximately forty nine. What Language Did You Read the Books In?
The majority of respondents read the books in English, but 111 (21.63%) have read the books in another language, including 21 respondents who have only read the books in a language other than English. Of all languages (optionally) given other than English, the most responses were 21 for Spanish.
How did you come across the books?
The most common response was that people were fans of the 1994 movie, with being introduced to the books by friends and family in close second place. People who selected âotherâ and typed their own answer have been grouped together, these categories of responses are indicated with an asterisk (*).
For the group âReference in Another Piece of Media,â two answers were specifically about the 1986 song Moon over Bourbon Street by Sting, and the third was the televison show What We Do In the Shadows (which has directly both referenced and parodied TVC, primarily the 1994 film)
