Having a friend with a mental illness
When I am having a bad day, please do not:
• ignore me • belittle my feelings • say you understand because you had a bad day last year • when I say I don’t feel up to something, don’t force me to feel awkward about my answer. • don’t pretend everything is perfect in the world • get mad at me if I fail to stay safe (I will feel abandoned)
But do:
• ask me occasionally how I am doing • reassure me that you don’t hate me • if you see fresh self harm injuries, please don’t bring it up unless I suggest or lean towards talking about my feeling • reassure me that things will eventually be okay • try to include me in things even if I don’t always say yes. • encourage me that I am important
Please know:
• my moods can change at any time • I may be difficult to talk to but chances are I love you • I know I don’t have a great filter and I am sorry • on my bad days, I really need you, I sometimes won’t let you know that I am having a bad day. • you are important to me, and I don’t want to hurt you in any way on purpose • I put trust in you about my feelings, don’t betray that power • I love you
