I've seen a lot of people talking about how autistic-coded Grace is in the movie, but I have yet to see anybody mention how much deeper that autism runs in the book? Like the first two chapters are maybe like a page or two of Grace waking up and then the rest is just him calculating shit for no real reason.

Like he immediately is like "I need to figure out how much gravity I'm experiencing right now because it's really annoying me. Also I would like to know how big of a centrifuge I would have to be in in order to experience this level of gravity, and before you ask, yes, I showed my work. Let me explain, in way more detail than anyone could possibly want or need, my calculations." He literally admits he doesn't need to be doing all this math, he just really, really wants to.

And then when he tries to start communicating with Rocky, the first two things he brings are a clock and tape measure. So he can teach him about numbers. No hi, hello, how are you? I don't think they even got to 'yes' and 'no' before he pulled up trying to teach the alien how to count. This man is so obsessed with numbers, he cannot possibly conceive of an intelligent species that isn't just as obsessed with numbers.

something that i DO find fascinating abt both phm and interpretations of it is when folks say things along the lines of “the point of grace’s lack of attachments isn’t that he’s aroace, the point of grace’s lack of attachments is that he’s refused to open himself up enough to form ANY close bonds because he’s a coward” because like. not only is it very possible for both to be true, i think that reading both as being the case continues to enhance the story AND speaks a very honest truth about how being aroace might have affected his life?

like. imagine you are grace. you have a life you enjoy where you get to teach kids you’re fond of about a subject you love. you’ve been hanging out with your friend marissa weekly for years (!) and you have a lot of peers on project hail mary who you respect and even have fun with. but! you’re also like 40, and you know how the world works - at the end of the day, at the end of the project, all of those people will go back to their parents and families and partners. the people whose names are on their emergency contact forms and birth certificates and marriage licenses and apartment leases. no matter how much you care about them, and no matter how much they care about you, there is always someone else in their life who is Above you, and Before you, because That’s How The World Works.

so like… yeah. lmao. aroace grace not opening himself up all the way because he anticipates pain and wants to avoid that is a kind of protective hedging that i find very likely for him to engage in? even if he opens himself up to the people around him, the fact is that most of those people will only reciprocate to whatever degree they/society deem acceptable for friendship, even if they like him a lot.

which is why, imo, the very careful portrayal of grace and rocky’s friendship in the phm film reads as extremely aroace-coded. because it’s not “rocky specifically is Special and Likable in a way which fixes all of grace’s hangups and allows him to open up” - it’s “rocky has a partner to go home to, but on multiple occasions, puts grace Above and Before that in a way which grace is unused to, because grace comes from a society which culturally and legally devalues the types of relationships he wants and holds most dear.” and once rocky shows that he is willing to reciprocate friendship and care to a degree grace could never expect from anyone on earth, grace no longer needs to maintain the kind of emotional defenses he always has. grace likes rocky and wants to be friends from the moment they meet, of course, but only lets himself form SUCH a close bond after rocky demonstrates that he, too, does not place an earth-society-style limit on the strength of their friendship. and they’re both better off for it!

straying from the usual dogs i post (ba dum tss) to shout from the rooftops : Fukuzawa did disability parenting right.

i cannot make it through the origins arc without sobbing over Ranpo’s experiences as an autistic person, but the most underrated aspect of this is how Fukuzawa goes about supporting him.

Fukuzawa, during this arc and even now, is a single first-time parent of a special needs kid living in a dangerous environment. do I even need to explain how difficult this is. APPLAUD HIM RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE HE DID IT AND DID IT WELL.

he struggles, he researches and reads books but finds every traditional parenting method to be ineffective. he realizes that Ranpo cannot function under neurotypical parenting tactics and changes to accommodate for this. he never tries to fit Ranpo inside of a category or box.

i’ve seen some discourse about whether or not Fukuzawa did the right thing by lying to Ranpo - personally, I believe he did.

when faced with a child who was lost, afraid, and couldn’t understand the world, he gave Ranpo an object of comfort. explained his situation in a way that he could see clearly. Fukuzawa taught him to be proud of who he is, and unafraid of the neurotypical world.

it’s not some grand-kept secret, Ranpo himself knows the truth, it’s about bringing a sense of familiarity and comfort.

after all the lengths Fukuzawa has gone to support Ranpo, he smiles at the thought of being seen as his father. he’s never viewed the care he gives as a burden or a chore, because he is proud to be a dad and proud of his child.

autistic nico di angelo you are SO precious to me. he feels isolated not only because of his parentage, because of himself. there is something wrong with him, and no matter what he does, he cannot seem to right it. his monotone and confusion towards sarcasm leaves him outcasted, his overbearing passion towards mythomagic leaving him friendless in youth. it’s all he would talk about, like a broken record. nobody but bianca cared to listen, and now his safe person is gone. he’s alone, believing he is broken, believing he is unloveable because of what he does not have the words to name.
