Mara’s main reason for allowing Variks to test the Guardians in the Prison of Elders was to observe the abilities of the children of Light. She knew the time would come when she would need the power and ability to break the bargain made between Sathona and Savathûn; she believed she may need the Guardians to do it.

When Mara began to work with Eris and Osiris to plan what they would do when Oryx came, Mara had confidence in the choice to leave the defeat of Oryx to the Guardians. She knew they both had the ability to do it, and the will to leave his throne empty, the exact thing she needed to overcome Savathûn.

She finds the Guardians interesting, bordering on fascinating, but most of her curiosity about them was settled while they frequented her Reef. Knowing she has used them and now having more respect for their power, she eventually seeks to parley with them after they are run from the City so they might work together to drive the Cabal from the system.

a handful of Awoken / Reef related headcanons:

Reefborn Awoken tend to have rather long lifespans. Awoken in general will experience this, but those who are twinned, true Awoken, will live even longer.

Reeftongue is the language specific to the Reefborn Awoken. It has rather specific pronoun rules, which are somewhat translatable, and most people are called it and not you because of the way it translates.

Songs are important to the culture of the Reef - both literal songs and singing, as well as the strange, paracausal kind that only the Tech-witches can hear, and those who are twinned with especially powerful minds.

Techeuns, or Tech-witches, are rare. Their powers are innate and are strengthened when truly Awoken. Any child with the proclivities of a witch are immediately adopted by the Coven, although not all prove to be strong enough to become full witches.

Reef society is very strictly matriarchal - Uldren Sov is the most powerful male Awoken to date, and his position is very obviously a product of him being the Queen’s brother. However, he is very loyal to the Reef and very skilled, and therefore not many Awoken feel ill that he has the position he does.
