“Until the end of the line”
To see how far the line goes, we have to start at the beginning.

bucky barnes wasn’t a womanizer in the ‘40s, he was closeted and liked dancing. no i will not take critique at this time
Listen the winter soldier peeled my 13 year old hairline all the way back in a way no movie (excluding rag. And bp they don’t count) from the MCU will ever ever ever do again. The flavor of TWS Steve Rogers…untouchable. Tht man literally murdered so many people in the movie. As soon as his ass decided to dunk in that water in the beginning he was breaking spines and throwing knives through hands n shit he killed all them people on that ship by hiself. And THEN this man takes out a whole fucking plane by himself like why the fuck was Steve such a bad bitch in that movie.
Don’t get me started on winter soldier bucky he had the sauce. The shot where he’s in Alexander Pierce’s house n the light is just on his eyes. I FELT that. HIS WALK? His energy? Okay. SAM Wilson is ALSO a bad bitch he pushed tht one dude off the overpass he said I don’t give a fuck and took his gun. And he told what’s his face to shut the hell up he said I don’t got time for ur dumbass just shut the fuck up.
who wants to be my nanowrimo buddy this year

I guess another reason the endgame ending bothers me (and inspirationally, as again, it leads to a characterization of steve who has Serious Problems With Himself) is the difference between his relationship with peggy in TFA and the way he idolizes that same relationship after he wakes up in modern times
so, in TFA, steve is *becoming* captain america, and part of that is his intrinsic moral and noble self trying to find a way to express itself in (what the film frames as) the failure of his body. and it’s essential that peggy meets him as skinny steve, treats him as a whole person at that moment, and explicitly relates his struggles to fill a role in the wartime efforts with her tenuous position as a woman in military service. they meet, and they bond as individuals who lack--for explicitly embodied reasons--what the structure deems necessary in order to be a recognized soldier.
but after TFA, steve doesn’t have that same struggle. now his journey is one of finding himself in a world that doesn’t seem to need “the ultimate soldier” as much as it needs clarity of voice, independence of vision, etc. which means steve has to turn his sense of self inward. the problem, however, is that because steve essentially loses his whole identity in the ice, he turns peggy into Peggy--a vision of What Could Have Been--and this Peggy really has little to do with the peggy he knew. instead, she stands, in his memory, for that moment of being recognized as worthy, of being seen for himself. and this vision is seductive, especially because steve doesn’t quite know how to define himself.
so when given the option, he returns to the person who last made him feel like he could know himself--instead of staying with the person who could help him find a new self, create a new life.
marvel never let the steve / bucky dynamic live up to its potential. like these bitches r CHILDHOOD best friends who LIVED together for like six years. they literally know everything about each other. every embarrassing story every bad date every shitty hangover every dream and aspiration and petty grudges and pet peeves. no joke would be “too far” bc nothings off limits. do u have any idea how goddamn annoying they’d be to have around? what an absolute nightmare? you’re trying to be serious and they’re cackling like madmen bc of an inside joke from circa 1938????? we saw a SMIDGE of it in infinity war when they’re joking about the end of the world when everyone else like tf?? ....idk. they’d b clowns together. absolute clowns. we could have had comedy gold. too bad they only got two lines together per movie after catfa lmaoooo
the second steve rogers shaved his beard is the second he stopped being valid
not to be dramatic but steve shaving his beard off was extremely symbolic. that was steve rogers “cleaning up” his act (aka being nomad for years) and reentering himself into society as the clean shaven all american man everyone was so sure he was until he fucked w the govt and became a fugitive. it was him giving up on that lifestyle and v literally washing an essential and formative part of his life down the drain. it was steve rogers (a known deviant rebel and independent thinker) bringing the mold history had created for him out of the closet and trying to force himself back into it. it was saying “i was wrong, its time i put this chapter to rest” despite him being VERY right. it was a terrible and tone deaf move, especially paired with his obsession with the past & peggy, his suburban dad clothing, and his complete disregard for his morals. also he looked so good w that beard and six minutes was not enough screentime . i will NOT b taking criticism thnx in advance
actually i’m gonna respond
ok so, a) this is all entirely correct, but b) I want to make this an in-world characterization problem rather than the (true) out-of-world writing problem it is
so I’m a slut for a lot of steve characterizations, but one of my shame faves is sad/confused/repressed gay steve who does the Wrong Thing because it’s the Right Thing because he’s good at morality when it comes to government but bad at morality when it comes to romance/interpersonal relationships in general.
SO
image a steve who had been Nomad, who had abandoned the system/structure that had given his life meaning but that had betrayed him (ie the US government/military). who had constructed a new identity/sense of self against the system that had robbed him of his dearest friend, tortured that friend, etc. so, Winter Soldier onward, he is a Principled Person--what happened to Bucky was Wrong, and he was gonna right that wrong, and what that meant was finding/saving/redeeming Bucky while also continuing to save the world. and he...sort of did that--but (again, I’m making cowardly writing decisions into interesting problematic character decisions) maybe he couldn’t deal with the reality of Bucky, the person who meant so much to him, who represented the self he had had before steve became captain america, and so while attempting to give Bucky space to heal/become his own person, he’s sort of actively abandoning him out of an unconscious fear that knowing Bucky now would force him to confront a bunch of shit about himself that he’s been ignoring for years
like A) steve had a whole life/personality before becoming an icon of military propaganda, and B) what steve wants isn’t, in fact, the normative life that makes for the het romantic narrative but he can’t accept it about himself, and c) his desire for peggy (which was real in the 40′s, as at the time, she represented a nonnormative path toward patriotic service and self-acceptance) has sedimented into something burdensome and unhealthy
and so, when offered the chance to return to the easier vision of his life, the one where he would never have to confront his true crisis of self (instead, he would slowly die inside), he takes it. he shaves his beard, he saves the world, and he stays with peggy.
and he says goodbye to the one person who a) has always accepted him for his whole self, but b) would force him to Know his Whole Self, which might be what this steve fears most.

I just have such a profound need for best friend to lover AUs when both sides think there is no chance of anything ever happening.
Sharing beds together since they were little kids and never really growing out of that habit even though it now hurts to be that close to each other, knowing it will never be anything more than platonic cuddling.
Each of them being that one person the other goes to to feel better when they’ve had a shit day or date. Bonus if it’s 3am and they spend all night talking.
Neither of them realising how much they act like they are dating/married and getting super flustered or sad when someone asks how long they’ve been together because do you have to remind me of this painful unrequited torment I die a little more of with every passing second?
How much they make each other smile when one of them walks into a room.
Drunk kissing.
Practice kissing.
Going as each other’s dates to everything because it’s “convenient”.
Wearing each other’s pyjamas when staying over somehow becoming more arousing than if the other person was naked.
Having inside jokes and finishing each other’s sentences as casual as anything.
Knowing random medical shit about each other. Bonus if one of them takes an allergic reaction to something and the other one just pulls out some random ass medicine like they carry it around all the time- spoiler: they do- just in case of this exact eventuality.
The heart break of seeing each other with other people but doing their best to see it through with grin and with as much encouragement as they can muster.
Staring a little too long at each other.
The awkward moment when they reach the age they said they would marry each other if they were still single.
Getting fake married as kids and family members always reminding them about it , maybe going as far as to put on the video of the fake ceremony and giving them knowing looks.
Something happening- a kiss, sleeping together- and getting into an argument about it, scared this is it, this is the end, that they’ve fucked up and just wishing they could talk to each other about it, to their best friend.
Having the best black mail material on each other but ready to pounce on anyone else who so much as dares try black mail their BFF.
Having a song. Having a whole playlist.
Laughing the first time they have sex.
Already having seen each other at their very worst.
Getting to say cheesy things like, “I can’t believe I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend” or “I know I’m marrying you but…do you think I could still be in charge of your send off party? I’ve been planning this night for ten years and I will not have someone else mess those plans up.”
Even after years of being together, still being in awe of the fact they get to have the one person they thought they’d never get. The person they helped ask other people out. The person they used to give the “you deserve someone who loves you for you” speech to. The person they used to look at and wonder why does it have to be you? The person they look at now and think it could never have been anyone else.
This post was made for Stucky and now I have all these FEELS
Imagine your OTP in the 1920s
Distant sound of Stucky shippers laughing uproariously
steve: [does something illegal]
steve: [gets called out for it]
steve: ok but TECHNICALLY..,
Steve is shameless and definitely not Lawful Good
Pass it on
The truth will set you free
People who don’t know Captain America think he’s Lawful Good. People who know Captain America think he’s Neutral Good. People who know Steve Rogers know he’s absolutely Chaotic Good.

if you were wondering what my last two brain cells have been up to since I saw Endgame, wonder no longer
This is the ultimate Endgame meta post. That’s it, you can stop meta-ing about this movie and just move on to the next thing in your life.
DAMSEL IN DISTRESS
a classic theme in world literature, art, film and video games; most notably in those that have a lot of action. This trope usually involves beautiful, innocent, or helpless young female leads, placed in a dire predicament by a villain, monster, or alien, and who requires a male hero to achieve their rescue. After rescuing them, the hero often obtains their hand in marriage.
#i’m just saying#there’s a reason so many women fiercely latched on to bucky’s character#not only is bucky gorgeous but he’s also a constant plot point to give the hero manpain#in the first avenger he needs to be rescued and his death is the hero’s ultimate motivator#in the winter soldier the hero still mourns this momentous loss until bucky springs back like the beautiful femme fatale that he is#with no agency or autonomy i should add#and in civil war he’s again just a plot device this time to cause a rift between two Men#and the russos stated they chose bucky as the first to be dusted in IW so we could view this horror from steve’s eyes#anyway i have Thoughts#bucky barnes#steve rogers#cap: tfa#cap: tws#cap: cw (via mackievanstan)
Let’s also remember that Bucky is given feminine actions to perform outside of Being Rescued by Steve. Bucky performs a lot, like a whole hell of a lot, of emotional labor on Steve’s behalf. Oceans of digital ink have been spilled regarding Bucky’s role as pre-serum Steve’s physical and emotional caretaker. On-screen, we watch him arrange Steve’s domestic (“I am literally begging you to live with me now that your mother has passed away”) and social (“I found you a date!”) life for him…
(Interesting to note that when he takes on the role as Steve’s protector, the actual aggression involved is minimal: one punch and one kick in the alleway; one clean shot to the head during the CATFA montage.)
…and he puts up with Steve’s cock-eyed enthusiasm against his better judgment and against his own best interests. From letting Steve ditch him at the Expo on a night that should’ve been about Bucky making good memories to take overseas, to agreeing when Steve asks him to join a crack squad going after the same people responsible for a pretty damn significant trauma to him—and hell, skipping ahead to CW when he instantly joins up with Steve to go to Siberia despite the events of the first half of the film—Bucky constantly sublimates himself to serve the causes of other people.
And it’s not just Steve! Pierce orders and abuses and guilts Bucky into compliance even when he has misgivings. Bucky is undeniably reluctant to be dragged into the Infinity War, but he follows when T’Challa beckons, and he even plasters a big smile onto his face for when Steve shows up (to say nothing of the appearance change/personal grooming he put on in the meantime, which a - was so goddamn gay, and b - is a ploy to make him look more ready to be here, since Bucky’s appearance/state of dress is linked to his mental state, as evidenced by every single scene Bucky is ever in, ever).
Also, I think Bucky is the only MCU man we ever see shopping? (I’m not counting Peter Parker because he is a minor.) Actually shopping, not just walking through a marketplace or townsquare (or covertly using a computer). Chatting with the vendor and smiling and generally putting on social niceties that are often assigned to women irl and on-screen (without the manly posturing that even Peter engages in).
There was an article awhile back hypothesizing that Nonbinary Bucky took off as a popular fandom interpretation precisely because he’s been assigned the Woman’s Role so thoroughly. I can totally see why.

everything e v e r y bit of this, especially:
What fucks me up about this entire mess we have of their relationship now is that Bucky knew where Steve was going to and that he was going to stay. He knew and probably Steve asked him if it was okay to leave him and, since Bucky hasn’t managed well nor received the proper help (psychologically) to get over the PTSD war and being The Winter Soldier has left him, he said yes, it’s okay, if that’s what makes you happy you can go.
In CACW he said “I don’t think I’m worth all this, Steve” because he sees himself as a villain. It will haunt him for years and years even in therapy.
Just look at his face and tell me he doesn’t love Steven Grant Rogers with his entire soul and it actually kills him that he is leaving him.
Stucky reunion in the Endgame
At the cinema: Well, that was quite disappointing but I really love this movie.
A few hours later: Okay, but what the fuck was that?
One day later: BITCH WHATTAFUCK WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUUUUUU
