200 Word RPGs 2025
Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2025 event, running from November 1st, 2025 through November 30th, 2025. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.
i'm not sure that i'll do well again a game about stakes
you are a hero. you set out to save the world. everyone was counting on you and you failed.
you are dead, but lucky. death is willing to present you with three chances to rectify your failure
pick a one-on-one competitive game that you've played before. this is DEATH'S GAME. you must play it thrice:
first, against a stranger second, against someone in your life very dear to you third, against the person you know who's best at it
choose three tokens. these should be things that are not vital but you would be sad to see go: trinkets, snacks, or money in small denominations. when you lose a game, dispose of a token.
before playing each of your matchups, assign the game a stake that you haven't chosen before:
this game is for my right to return to the world of the living
this game is for the lives of my loved ones
this game is to save the world
you may play your games over any period of time.
if you tell your opponent about your stake or that you are playing this TTRPG, you immediately forfeit.
I really really like your work but sometimes I feel like 90% of the jokes go over my head. Can you recommend me anything to read/watch/experience to better understand your comics?
Of course. One of my biggest influences is the cartoonist B.Kliban. While best known for his distinctive cat drawings, most of his cartooning output was single-panel work.
Much of it is easily understandable language or visual puns, but many of his funny works are just unusual situations, with no obvious meaning:
(I think that "Household Hint" could be considered a spiritual forerunner of Tiktok ragebait food videos.)
In his 1975 collection titled "Cat," among many funny cat comics, there are several pages which are just drawings of his beloved cats.
I feel a strong connection to Kliban's approach: Direct contour-line drawing, mostly anonymous characters in novel situations, and few traditional long-term narrative stories. And yet, there are recurring visual trends. (Have you noticed that he only draws one kind of cat?)
It is said that we train our audiences, in form or content. Over time, the reader knows what to expect from an author.
I think that a lesson can be derived from this graphic design manual.
(from Notes on Graphic Design And Visual Communication by Gregg Berryman, 1979.)
I believe we can draw a correlation between broadly-defined "art" (comics, painting, drawing, sculpture, video, etc.) and logo design:
With low "abstraction" (depending upon references that many people will get, explaining things in extremely explicit terms), material will be readily understood, but it is hard to separate this material from other stuff out there. It's harder to have your individual voice known.
With high "abstraction" (sharing weird comics, but consistently over a long period of time with many people,) an artist can have their message understood- or at least received enthusiastically- even if they're weird.
I drew this yesterday. It is probably understandable as both a humorous criticism of gamer-centric marketing and also as a visual-verbal pun to most English speakers under 40. I'm not sure if "Gamer Butter" would be accepted readily without people being familiar with other drawings I've made which lampoon consumerism and gadget culture.
B.Kliban and I have had the good fortune to share our works widely enough to have such a special relationship of artist and viewer, who accept the less understandable material alongside the more easily digestible. Thank you for the kind comment and question.
Oh easy mistake. Yearning actually rises from the floor and longing hangs from the ceiling

reblog to give prev a very good week where not a single bad thing happens and everything is easy
Imagine if we did the “public libraries are punk” thing for other subcultures. Imagine if people made shirts that said “Soup kitchens are grunge” or “Mixed Use Urbanism is Juggalo”.
“How does one hate a country, or love one?… I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is love for one’s country; is it hate for one’s uncountry? Then it’s not a good thing. Is it simply self-love? That’s a good thing, but one mustn’t make a virtue of it, or a profession.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, from The Left Hand of Darkness (1969)
