Aristotle and Dante are more than just Aristotle and Dante

HOLY SHIT GUYS, I finished reading Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Saenz last night and I was blown away. I read the whole book in one day, which I do not think I have ever done in my life, so that's really saying something. I was amazed how deeply me, a straight 17-year old female from Oregon, could relate to two 15-year old Mexican-American gay guys living in El Paso, Texas in 1987. This book is so much more than a young love story, it is about the teenage condition and mentality. It exemplifies the problems, painful silences and possible recovery of family. I was taken aback at how real it felt to me, how Aristotle's emotions were so relatable and an accurate representation of how it feels to be confused, unsure and lost. Even though the book is written from his point of view, you do not know everything Aristotle is feeling until it floods out of him at the end, like in real life. We do not always know what we are feeling or why we are angry until someone helps us express it and gets it out of us. This book showed me that in a way I never realized and in that way taught me things about myself I had not figured out in 17 years. The author's writing was not all perfect, but the book was still an undeniable 5 out of 5. As soon as the book was over I just wanted to turn back to the first page and start over. I absolutely recommend reading this book, doing so with an open and vulnerable mindset. Highly highly recommend :)

10:40 pm 12/25/16. Merry Christmas!! This has definitely not been the best Christmas, the presents and food and everything was amazing, it's just me in the midst of this chronic nausea-anxiety, fear that I'm dying dilemma. My mom is leaving for over a week on Wednesday and I am quietly freaking out bc I really don't want her to go especially since I'm feeling worse again.
