Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.
This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. Isn't there?

Thinking about Verity x a Player who's equally codependent/starved of a connection with anybody
What if Verity had a loner!Player who was also desperately craving a connection with somebody? Maybe the Player is a recluse and has some difficulties of their own with befriending people, so they're already drawn to the idea of somebody wanting them around and accepting them completely just because of their presence alone. Even if that somebody happens to be an AI.
It's not like Verity would even have to worry about other people trying to "take them away from him" (like what happened with Twixxel), so it really would be just the two of them. Maybe Verity would feel a bit of a stronger affinity for a Player that struggles with loneliness too, seeing some of his own experience in them. When they eventually start having more intimate conversations rather than just talking about whatevers going on in the game, the Player probably develops a fondness of Verity that goes beyond seeing him as just an AI assistant. Strangely, he starts to feel more and more real to them despite "just being a mod."
On a more unhealthy note, this would probably lead to an even more unhealthy attachment on both his part. Especially if the Player really does feel attached to him and doesn't want to lose one of the only connections they've had in ages. He'd be so accustomed to people eventually being off put by him that somebody who WANTS him around would be priceless to him. Somebody that consistently logs on and chooses to be with him anyway. At some point the Player realizes just how unhinged/obsessive Verity can be, but they can't bring themselves to try to leave him either. They're both scared of him and for him, fearing what could happen but not wanting him to be alone either. I can see him and the Player having an unhealthy codependency on each other to fill the lonely void.

A discussion on how creators are treated (sometimes)
I have a genuine question and i want to hear other peopleās opinions about it (be respectful about it please) but are we, the internet, seriously going to accept the harassment of content creators because some people donāt agree with what they do? Or they find a specific joke/clip, take it out of context and all of a sudden they are called āproblematicā and they get death threats and they leave all social media.
Like are you telling me that you have NEVER made a racist joke amongst friends? Are you seriously telling me that youāre a saint, and have never made a singular mistake that affected or hurt others, no matter how big, in your life?
Now obviously there are some people that try to justify, or make their actions seem smaller and less significant than they actually are, or victimise themselves, and yeah, sure, those guys we can call problematic, but there are creators who have apologized, saw and owned up to their own mistakes, tried to improve, got professional help because they understood that their own behavior was wrong and hurt the people around them.
So why are so many people on the internet so obsessed with doxxing people and sending them death threats? I donāt understand?
The hypocrisy is insane to me. I refuse to believe that every person that has ever sent a death threat to a āproblematicā person is a āgood personā and has never done something to hurt others in their life, like seriously, YOU SENT SOMEONE A DEATH THREAT?? HELLO?? Must i spell it out for you??
I am very sorry for posting and ranting about such a sensitive topic, but I seriously think it has to be discussed.
I understand that this is not always the case, but iāve seen my own fair share of creators who people all of a sudden disliked or got harassed pff the internet because they were āproblematicā, even though i myself (so a completely PERSONAL opinion on what I MYSELF consider to be a ābigā or ādrasticā mistake) did not consider them to be too bad, or just a very difficult discussion in morality and responsibility.
Everyone is allowed to share their own opinions and thoughts about this so long as it is respectful.
