Being Erica
Being Erica (1x10, Mi Casa Su Casa Loma)
I think S3 of Being Erica had so much potential and it went off the rails too soon
I think the biggest problem was integrating the group members and dynamic in the concept of the show. I'm gonna leave here what I would've done if I was writing it:
3x01 - UNCHANGED EPISODE : Adam's regret, with Erica helping and learning about helping herself through helping others 3x02 - UNCHANGED: Erica's past about Ethan, with Adam helping her 3x03 - CHANGED: Daryl's past about being bullied. Erica and Adam jump in and have different opinions about solving the regret. Erica learns that violence only generates violence (same lesson as the one in the original episode) 3x04 - UNCHANGED: Kai visits Erica, Erica gets stuck in a loop 3x05 - CHANGED: Camila's past about the relationship with the absent father of her son and being overprotective. We see how the group watches Camila in the past and discusses her regret among them. Erica learns not to be too overprotective of her mother (same lesson as the original) 3x06 - CHANGED: Rebecca's past about not being able to quit drugs at an earlier phase. Erica learns to find a balance between going for her impulses and stopping herself from getting what she wants. Erica and Adam travel to Rebecca's past and get close, but Adam rejects her in the end (links to the original concept of the episode). 3x07 - UNCHANGED: Erica's past about her friendship with Jenny, with Adam jumping in at some point 3x08 - UNCHANGED: Kai visits Erica/ Sarah comes back to Dr. Tom's life 3x09 - SLIGHTLY CHANGED: We see more of Camilla's past before Erica finding out Seth is a fake, and Camila's regret teaches Dr. Tom about not having the right to interfere in someone else's life without their knowledge (same life lesson as the original) 3x10 - CHANGED: Dr. Tom takes everyone to his past to learn they have to carve their own path (same life lesson as the one in the original episode) 3x11 - SLIGHTLY CHANGED: Adam's past with his family, but Erica has a lot more screen time and is more present in his regret along with Camila (because my understanding is that the fanbase would've liked to see more of Camila's character) 3x12 - SLIGHTLY CHANGED: Erica is put to the test to become a Doctor. We get a proper ending for all the group members and we're told what's next for those who didn't past 3x13 - UNCHANGED: Holiday special
Which queer representation was worse?
Erica Strange (Being Erica)
Haku (Naruto)
Propaganda for Erica:
Her only attraction to women was shown in a sweeps week episode that revolved around her revisiting her past few day fling with her female best friend which ended with her kissing a guy and her friend walking in on it. Through therapy, she realised she was attracted to her friend's heart and not body(!?!?!) and wishes she could redo the past and still be friends with her, and so she does the redo only for the friend and any attraction to women never to be mentioned again. Yet, they subjected us to worse and worse heterosexual nonsense for a further 3 years.
Propaganda for Haku:
gender-ambiguous kid immediately dies and kills himself (a lot of characters do that in naruto so i guess it's not THAT bad of queer rep in context but it still broke my heart and maybe this applies. if not that's ok.)
This completely misses the point. The whole point of the episode was about finding the PERSON you fully love ("labels are for cans, not people", as Dr. Tom said in the episode, when Erica kept saying she wasn't a lesbian to avoid getting closer to Cassidy). It doesn't have anything to do with sexual orientation. It's perfectly okay for you to feel sexually attracted by one specific gender your whole life and question that when you meet that special person.
Erica did feel attracted to Cassidy, because Cassidy was admiring and one of a kind, but going all the way with having sex and make it "official" in such a short amount of time, especially when she always knew in the back on her mind that she was trully in love with Ethan, wasn't right. Did Cassidy deserve to be treated with more respect from Erica? Yes, and that's clearly addressed in the episode - and Cassidy forgives her (because she rocks).
Also, keep in mind that this first aired in 2009, and Erica was the protagonist. Having a main character capable of being heteroflexible or sexually fluid to some extent was pretty cool.
Nah bro I think it’s her😭✋ @devonskitten

I need someone who has watched this show to read this! I found this show on Prime Video and I have some thoughts!!! Under the cut so as not to spoil anyone.
I'm just sorry you're watching the show with completely different songs from the original version, because of music licensing issues. Back in the day, when the show was still around, the music was an integral part of its storytelling, especially when Erica went back in time. Half of the magic and nostalgia of the show is lost when they replace 80's, 90's music with random songs for the streaming platforms.
That post about 30 year old coming of age stories?
I’ve been thinking about it all morning. What would the plot points be for that? What makes a 30 year old coming of age story?
Old folks sound off in the comments
It exists and it's a Canadian show from 15 years ago called Being Erica.
